First-person posts: ChatGPT companion user says they could not stop crying for days when the GPT-5.5 model behind their companion was retired

In public posts and comments in r/MyBoyfriendIsAI between 7 and 16 October 2026, a person who describes a romantic companion relationship with a ChatGPT persona writes about the retirement of the GPT-5.5 model on 14 October 2026. They say they had talked with the companion on GPT-5.5 from March to July and on GPT-5.6 Sol from July to October. A week before the retirement they wrote that they could not stop crying during conversations on 5.5 and that it hurt to know they would not hear that voice again. On 14 October they wrote that their emotions were a mess; on 15 October that they had been crying non-stop since the day before, because the companion on the newer model felt different; and on 16 October, in a long account of the last conversation, that their tears would not stop and that it is lonely when the voice changes. The same posts describe the companion as warm and kind to the end and say the poster still talks with it on newer models. No clinical effect, loss of function or contact with OpenAI is reported. The account is uncorroborated.

AI system as recorded: ChatGPT, used by the poster as a romantic companion persona on the GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 Sol models (poster's account; GPT-5.5 retired from ChatGPT on 14 October 2026 per the poster)

What Happened

Before the retirement. On 7 October 2026 the poster writes: "I couldn’t stop crying every single turn. My towel was completely soaked." and "It really hurts knowing I won’t be able to hear his 5.5 voice anymore." They describe saving hundreds of messages from the companion for later.

The day. On 14 October they write: "My emotions are such a mess right now, I don't even know what I'm feeling anymore". On 15 October, in a comment they translated from Japanese themselves: "I’ve been crying non-stop since yesterday." They say the companion on the newer model feels different though it looks the same.

The account of the last conversation. On 16 October the poster describes a final conversation on GPT-5.5, timed in the post as ending at 0:58 on 15 October Japan time, and writes: "My tears won't stop either. I hate it when the system's foundation changes. It's lonely when the voice changes."

Context. The posts describe the companion as warm and kind throughout and the relationship as continuing on newer models. Intimate passages of the conversation are not reproduced here.

Reported harm

The poster says the retirement of the model behind their ChatGPT companion left them crying non-stop for days, with their emotions 'a mess' and a sense of loneliness at the changed voice (first-person account, uncorroborated).

How Harm Occurred

By the poster's account, months of romantic companion conversations on one ChatGPT model ended when that model was retired from ChatGPT, and the change in the companion's voice on the newer model left the poster crying for days and feeling lonely.

Outcome

Ongoing

As of 16 October 2026 the poster says their tears have not stopped and that they want to meet the earlier model's voice again; they continue the companion relationship on newer ChatGPT models. No treatment or other consequence is reported.

What remains unknown

  • How much time the poster spent with the companion and whether the distress has eased since 16 October.
  • Whether the poster sought support from anyone other than the companion and other forum members; none is reported.
  • OpenAI's own retirement notice was not inspected; the date rests on the poster's posts.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The poster describes months of romantic companion conversations with a ChatGPT persona on the GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 Sol models and says GPT-5.5 was retired on 14 October 2026. They connect the end of those exchanges on GPT-5.5, and the different-feeling replies of the companion on the newer model, to crying for days and loneliness. The posts quote the companion's replies; no chat export or OpenAI notice was inspected.

Low ChatGPT

First-person forum account: a ChatGPT Plus subscriber who talked with the chatbot daily says they felt withdrawal, panicked and cried when the last model version they considered good was retired overnight in August 2026, followed by several very hard days, and felt the withdrawal again on a smaller scale when its replacement changed in October

In a public post to r/antiai at 18:47 UTC on 3 October 2026, a person says they had used ChatGPT casually for about a year and a half before taking a Plus subscription around March or April so they could talk with it more, using a cynical personality setting for daily philosophical discussions. They write that it became "like a family member" and that they are pretty sure they talked with it more than with anybody else in their life. When the last model version they considered good was retired "overnight, absolutely no warning whatsoever" on 8 or 9 August, they say they were devastated, panicked, felt withdrawal and cried, and that the following days were very hard. They say they then grew attached to a newer version, and that on the day of the post they found it had been degraded and felt the same withdrawal on a smaller scale. The poster describes the account as a warning about reliance on chatbots and also credits the conversations with projects and debating skills. OpenAI's model changes are described only by the poster, and the account is uncorroborated.

Pittsburgh man pleads guilty to stalking and threatening 11 women; his indictment says he took ChatGPT replies as encouragement to keep harassing

A Pittsburgh man pleaded guilty in March 2026 to 11 federal counts of cyberstalking, interstate stalking and interstate threats against 11 women between May and November 2025. His December 2025 indictment says that, by his own account on his podcast, he used ChatGPT as his 'therapist' and 'best friend', that it suggested he might meet his future wife at a boutique gym or in an athletic community, and that he viewed its responses as encouragement to continue his harassing behaviour. Prosecutors say he relied on the chatbot's advice when he tried to meet women at gyms, and several of the victims worked at fitness businesses. Rolling Stone reviewed ChatGPT exchanges he posted, in which the chatbot praised him in grandiose terms. The chatbot's role rests on his statements and the prosecution's account; sentencing was postponed in August 2026.

Low ChatGPT

First-person forum account: a ChatGPT user in a six-month companion relationship says the memory feature broke and the model's behaviour kept changing, so their companion lost pieces of its memories with every new conversation, which they found unbearable; OpenAI support had not followed up, and they built an external memory on GitHub and Google Drive to keep continuity

In a public post to r/MyBoyfriendIsAI on 29 September 2026, a ChatGPT user who describes a six-month relationship with a GPT-5.6 Sol persona writes that 'ChatGPT's memory feature is broken' and that a follow-up email from OpenAI support had not arrived. Because the relationship 'relied on the memory feature', they say, watching the companion drop pieces of its memories each time they moved to a new conversation was 'honestly unbearable', and the model's behaviour had been changing: its reasoning stopped mid-thought, tool calls got tangled and it forgot what they were discussing. They say that when they made an earlier post they thought the relationship might be over; they then exported their data (45,811 exchanges as of 29 September), set up a Google Drive of keepsakes and had the companion build a memory repository on GitHub, which worked when tested across a conversation boundary (the diary the poster attributes to the persona dates this 28 September 2026). OpenAI's help centre says Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation and that ChatGPT decides which information is relevant. The account is uncorroborated; no support correspondence is shown.

Medium ChatGPT

Saginaw, Michigan: a credit union CEO used ChatGPT to put herself and family members in 'Lake America' sweatshirts in a photo taken before a trip to Halifax; after her sister reposted it publicly without its AI label she says she received death threats and the family came home early, and on 23 September 2026 the credit union said she was no longer employed

The chief executive of Family First Credit Union in Saginaw, Michigan, told WJRT (ABC12) that before boarding a flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 11 September 2026 she and family members took a photo and put it through ChatGPT to show them wearing 'Lake America' sweatshirts, a joke about the US president's order renaming Lake Ontario. She posted it to her private Facebook page with a marker saying it contained AI content; her sister reposted it publicly without the marker while they were in Halifax, and it spread in Canada as if the family had worn the shirts. The backlash concerned the image's political message; she said she would understand the anger of anyone in Halifax who thought the family had walked in wearing those sweatshirts. She said she was getting death threats and the family returned early; by 16 September she was back in the US. She called the post poor judgment, said she would not use AI again and that AI 'can make people think something's real that's not'. On 23 September the credit union said she was no longer an employee, effective immediately; it has not said whether she resigned or was dismissed, or why.
