Navbharat Times (12 May 2026) reported that a student in the Banganga police station area of Indore accused a young man of editing her old photographs in an objectionable way with the help of AI and then mentally tormenting her with threats to make them viral. According to police, she had met the accused, a resident of the Indore area, at a wedding, where he took some of her photographs on his phone; ordinary conversation followed, but he then began pressing her to marry him and, when she refused, sought revenge. He allegedly used AI to edit her photographs into an objectionable form and kept blackmailing her and threatening to make them viral; out of fear and shame she told no one for a long time, during which her family arranged her engagement elsewhere. The accused reached her fiancé and showed him the edited pictures; a dispute arose between the families and the engagement was broken off, after which the student went into deep mental distress, finally told her family, and they went with her to the police. Additional DCP Amrendra Singh said an FIR had been registered on her complaint under the IT Act and sections on threats and defamation through social media, and that the accused had been threatening to make the photographs and a video viral. Amar Ujala (12 May) said the complainant was a first-year student at a private college who met the accused at her sister's wedding in 2024, that he later pressed her to marry him and, when she rejected the proposal, threatened to distort her photographs with AI and post them online, followed her, obstructed the marriage her family later arranged, threatened to defame and kill her and her family, and sent some edited pictures when the family tried to reason with him, and that when her engagement took place about two months earlier he went to her house and made false allegations about her character in front of the prospective fiancé, after which the engagement broke; worn down by the harassment and social humiliation she had made up her mind to take a suicidal step, but with her family's support she told senior police officers, on whose instructions the case was registered; police were searching for the accused. Patrika (13 May) reported the case as one of AI-made photographs and a video used to blackmail a college student, said the accused met her at her sister's wedding two years earlier, threatened to make her wedding photographs obscene with AI and post them, threatened to kill her parents if she did not talk to him, and, on learning that her family had fixed her marriage two months earlier, went to the fiancé's home, defamed her and frightened him into breaking the match; she told police that he kept following her.
