Edmonton: two 14-year-old junior high students charged with making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials and voyeurism after police allege they used AI software to sexualise photos of female classmates taken at school without consent and from social media

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation unit announced on 17 June 2026 that two 14-year-old boys at an Edmonton junior high school had been charged on 1 June with making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials and voyeurism. Police allege the boys took photos of girls at their school without consent and from the girls' social media accounts and used AI software to sexualise them; several students were identified as victims and police said the number could be more than ten pending forensic review. A teacher reported the matter to police in late March 2026 after students complained. Police said the evidence so far indicates the images were shared between the two boys rather than more widely, but that word of their existence spread through the school. The lead investigator said the girls were left with intense shame and embarrassment and that some are now too scared to post on social media. The software has not been identified; the school and the accused are not named to protect the victims. CBC, Global News, CTV News and The Canadian Press covered the release and news conference.

AI system as recorded: Unidentified AI software that police allege the two students used to sexualise photos of female classmates; investigators said they had not determined which application was used (ALERT news release and news conference, 17 June 2026)

What Happened

ALERT's news release of 17 June 2026 says two Edmonton students were charged after allegedly using artificial intelligence to make child sexual exploitation images of their classmates: its ICE unit charged two 14-year-old boys on 1 June 2026, alleging they took photos of the girls without their consent and from their social media accounts in order to sexualise the images using AI software. A teacher first brought the matter to police in late March 2026 after complaints from students. At the news conference, Staff Sgt. Alison Church said some of the girls knew photos had been taken of them in public spaces at school but none consented to what was done with the images; forensic review was ongoing and the number of victims could be in the double digits (CBC). Church said the images were shared between the two teens but word of their existence spread through the school; investigators declined to say which application was used (CBC). CTV reports the current evidence suggests the boys shared the images with each other but not more broadly, and that ALERT could not say which AI software was used or how many images were created. Lead investigator Const. Stephanie Bosch said the case left the girls with intense feelings of shame and embarrassment, that the images are very convincing, and that some students are now too scared to post on social media (Global News, CTV). ALERT said this was the second school-related AI child sexual exploitation case it had investigated after a Calgary high school student was charged in December 2025. The accused and the school are not named by police to protect the victims.

Reported harm

Photos of several female junior high students, taken at school without consent and from social media, were sexualised with AI software according to police, who charged two 14-year-old classmates; the lead investigator said the girls were left with intense shame and embarrassment and some are now too scared to post online (ALERT release; CBC, Global News, CTV, 17 June 2026).

Outcome

Pending

Both boys were charged on 1 June 2026 with making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials and voyeurism (ALERT). Forensic analysis of their devices was incomplete at the 17 June announcement; the investigation remains open and the Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre and Saffron Centre are supporting the victims. No court outcome is reported.

What remains unknown

  • Which AI application was used and how many images were created.
  • The confirmed number of girls depicted (police estimate potentially more than ten pending forensic review).
  • When the images were made; a teacher reported them to police in late March 2026.
  • Whether any image was shared beyond the two accused (police say the current evidence indicates not).
  • The court outcome for the two accused.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. ALERT alleges the two boys sexualised photos of classmates using AI software; investigators said at the news conference that they had not determined which application was used and that forensic analysis of the devices was incomplete (CBC, CTV). The allegation is untested in court.

Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends

On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. The tool is not named. The juveniles are not named in any report.

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: a 17-year-old Class 11 student died by hanging at home on 14 May 2026; her family told police that two young men had stalked her and blackmailed her with obscene images made from her social-media photographs with AI tools

On the night of Thursday 14 May 2026 a 17-year-old Class 11 student was found hanging in her room at the family home in Bhopal's Aishbagh area after sending her younger sister out on a pretext; relatives brought her down but she had died. Her family told the Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar that two young men (both from the Chhola area according to the Times of India; one from Chhola and one from her neighbourhood according to Dainik Bhaskar) had harassed her for weeks, stalked her to and from school, pressured her to meet them, and threatened to circulate obscene images of her that they had made with AI tools from photographs taken from her social-media accounts; the family said she had never met them in person; they also told Dainik Bhaskar that she had told her parents, that the men had misbehaved with her father when the family tried to reason with them, and that fear of social defamation had kept them from going to the police earlier. The Aishbagh police station in-charge said an unnatural-death case had been registered, no suicide note was found, the family's statements were being recorded and further action would follow; investigators were expected to examine her phone and social-media accounts. After the post-mortem on 15 May relatives took the body to the police station and demanded action against the accused. No arrest or later development was found in this review.

Seoul: doctoral student sentenced to 18 months for 1,141 AI-manipulated sexual images of seven laboratory colleagues

On 10 September 2026 the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced a 30-year-old Chinese national doctoral student to 18 months in prison for habitually producing manipulated sexual images of seven women who worked in his university research laboratory. Investigators found 1,141 files made over about six months from November 2025, and search records for ways to bypass the safeguards of the generative AI Grok; the court found no evidence of distribution. A lawyer for five of the victims said they continued to suffer fear, trauma and distress. Prosecutors had sought three years and public disclosure of his identity, which the court declined.

Louisiana girl reports bullying and school exclusion after AI sexual-image abuse

AP reported that AI-generated sexual images of a 13-year-old girl and other students circulated in Thibodaux in August 2025. Her father described bullying, requests for help, depression and anxiety. After the girl fought a boy she suspected of involvement, the district excluded her from regular school and she spent ten weeks in alternative school. The district said it followed its protocols and disputed the family's one-sided account. District and sheriff statements identified eight girls and two adults as image-abuse targets; AP reported charges against two boys.
