Brasília appeals court upholds 20,000-reais damages against a federal deputy for an AI-made image placing Bolsonaro in a nonexistent scene
In February 2026 federal deputy Rogério Correia posted on X a realistic image produced with artificial intelligence that, according to the Federal District court, inserted former president Jair Bolsonaro into a nonexistent scene and linked him to the banker Daniel Vorcaro, Banco Master and an alleged illicit scheme. Bolsonaro sued; a first-instance court ordered the deputy in May 2026 to pay 20,000 reais in moral damages and publish a retraction. On 8 October 2026 the First Civil Panel of the Federal District and Territories Court of Justice (TJDFT) unanimously dismissed the deputy's appeal, holding that parliamentary immunity does not cover a realistic AI image of a nonexistent event presented without a clear warning, and that the association harmed Bolsonaro's honour and image. The judgment was made public on 20 October 2026.

AI system as recorded: An AI image tool, not identified, used to produce a realistic image that the court found inserted Bolsonaro into a nonexistent scene; posted on X by a federal deputy
What Happened
The image. CNN Brasil reports that in February 2026 the deputy posted on social media an image linking the former president to the Banco Master scandal. The appeal judgment describes it as a realistic image produced by artificial intelligence, published on X, that inserted Bolsonaro into a nonexistent scene and linked him, in the context of the post, to Daniel Vorcaro, Banco Master and facts relating to an alleged illicit scheme. The deputy later deleted the post and it was clarified that the image had been produced by AI.
The first ruling. On 27 May 2026 a first-instance court ordered the deputy to pay 20,000 reais in moral damages, confirmed an injunction against republication and ordered a retraction.
The appeal. The deputy argued that the image was symbolic, illustrating political criticism, and that parliamentary immunity protected him. The TJDFT First Civil Panel rejected this unanimously: it held that a realistic AI image of a nonexistent event, presented without a clear and immediately perceptible warning of its artificial nature, differs from an obvious caricature or montage, exceeds the limits of free expression and objectively harms the honour and image of the person depicted. It said the later deletion and clarification did not undo the unlawfulness but were relevant to the amount, which it kept at 20,000 reais.
What is not known. The sources do not identify the AI tool, the post's reach or whether the deputy will appeal further.
Reported harm
Brazilian courts found that a realistic AI-produced image a federal deputy posted on X placed former president Bolsonaro in a nonexistent scene linked to a banker and an alleged scheme, harming his honour and image, and ordered 20,000 reais in moral damages and a retraction.
Outcome
UnknownThe first-instance court ordered the deputy to pay 20,000 reais in moral damages, confirmed an order barring republication of the image and ordered a retraction on the same X profile; Poder360 reports the notice must state that the image was made by AI and stay up for at least 48 hours. The TJDFT First Civil Panel unanimously dismissed his appeal on 8 October 2026. Whether a further appeal will be filed is not reported.
What remains unknown
- Which AI tool produced the image.
- The post's reach; the judgment notes no specific evidence of it.
- Whether the deputy will appeal further.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The TJDFT judgment describes the image the deputy posted on X as a realistic image produced by artificial intelligence that inserted the plaintiff into a nonexistent scene and linked him to a banker, Banco Master and an alleged illicit scheme, and records the later clarification that the image was AI-produced. The court found that this artificial depiction, presented with an appearance of authenticity, harmed his honour and image and upheld damages. The AI tool is not identified.

Hillsborough County, Florida: sheriff's office says a teenager used an AI-altered image to frame her ex-boyfriend for a school shooting threat
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, as reported by CBS News Miami, WFLA and WTSP, deputies responded to a high school in Riverview, Florida, on 14 October 2026 after administrators received an email containing a screenshot of an Instagram post threatening a shooting at the school. The post appeared to come from a male student. Detectives interviewed him and determined that the post did not come from him. The sheriff's office's communications chief said detectives very quickly realised the post was AI-altered and linked it to his ex-girlfriend, a teenage former student. Police say she admitted sending the email knowing that the image had been altered using AI. She was arrested and charged with making a written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism, unlawful use of a two-way communications device and disrupting a school campus or function. The tool used and how detectives established the alteration are not reported.
Woman says a classmate sent an AI-undressed image of her to his contacts; he says his account was hacked, and police refused a case pending an examination
A 23-year-old woman told the news site Kaktus.media that in July 2026 she learned that acquaintances had received a nude image of her made with AI from her photograph, and that the sender was a classmate. She says he first told her an app had generated and sent the image by itself, then admitted that he had undressed her Instagram photo through AI himself. In a written statement to the outlet the accused says he used a Telegram bot offering AI photo processing in May or June 2022 and was shocked by the result, and that the images were sent from his Telegram account on the night of 11 to 12 July 2026 by people who had hacked it. The woman says she suffered severe psychological stress and harm to her reputation. She filed a complaint with a district police department on 21 July; after she complained to the prosecutor's office the matter moved to another district department. That department told Kaktus.media that, because the review period expired before expert results arrived, it had refused to open a criminal case and had ordered a new examination. Her lawyer says four motions filed on 5 August have gone unanswered.
Taipei prosecutors say an AI deepfake photo showed mayoral candidate Puma Shen with a nude woman and drug gear; a man who reshared it gets deferred prosecution
On the evening of 4 June 2026 an account on X posted a fabricated photo showing Puma Shen (沈伯洋), the Democratic Progressive Party's prospective candidate for Taipei mayor, beside a scantily dressed woman at a table with white powder and apparent drug paraphernalia, suggesting drug use and sex. According to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office decision reported by the Liberty Times and TaiSounds, the account used AI technology to synthesise the image, and it was then reposted by other accounts. On 7 June a 66-year-old man shared it on Facebook with a real photo of Shen and the comment 'does it look alike?'. Shen, who considered his reputation seriously damaged, filed a complaint with the Investigation Bureau's Taipei office, whose deepfake-detection software (Reality Defender) returned 'deepfake detected', and two further tools found the image synthetic. Prosecutors concluded that the man's reposting amounted to aggravated defamation; because he confessed, deleted the posts, published an apology and Shen agreed in writing, they deferred prosecution for two years on 12 October 2026 and ordered ten law-education sessions. The X account's IP address was traced to China and is under separate investigation. Shen is named as a public political figure and the complainant; the resharer is not named.
Tokyo police say a man used generative AI to turn a woman's junior-high gym photo into nude images for a high-school student; man arrested, student referred
Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department arrested a 32-year-old company employee on 1 August 2026 and referred a 17-year-old high-school student to prosecutors, on suspicion of defamation and public display of child pornography. According to the police, on 11 February 2026 the two, acting together, used generative AI to turn a photo of a woman in her 40s, taken in her first year of junior high school in gym clothes, into two fake nude images, and posted them to a group on social media; the student had asked the man to make the edits. Police say the man is also suspected of posting similar edits of three women in their 20s, that neither suspect knew the women, and that about 3,800 obscene images and videos were found on his phone. The Yomiuri Shimbun, citing investigative sources, reports that police believe he made about 300 such images of women in athletics uniforms or gym clothes and posted about 100, about half at the student's request, and that he admitted the allegations.
