Tokyo police say a man used generative AI to turn a woman's junior-high gym photo into nude images for a high-school student; man arrested, student referred

Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department arrested a 32-year-old company employee on 1 August 2026 and referred a 17-year-old high-school student to prosecutors, on suspicion of defamation and public display of child pornography. According to the police, on 11 February 2026 the two, acting together, used generative AI to turn a photo of a woman in her 40s, taken in her first year of junior high school in gym clothes, into two fake nude images, and posted them to a group on social media; the student had asked the man to make the edits. Police say the man is also suspected of posting similar edits of three women in their 20s, that neither suspect knew the women, and that about 3,800 obscene images and videos were found on his phone. The Yomiuri Shimbun, citing investigative sources, reports that police believe he made about 300 such images of women in athletics uniforms or gym clothes and posted about 100, about half at the student's request, and that he admitted the allegations.

AI system as recorded: An unidentified generative AI tool that, according to the police, was used to turn real women's photos into fake nude images (tool not named in the reports read)

What Happened

The images. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, as reported by the Sankei Shimbun on 3 August 2026, a 32-year-old company employee and a 17-year-old high-school student acted together on 11 February 2026 to turn a photo of a woman in her 40s, taken when she was in her first year of junior high school and wearing gym clothes, into two fake nude images with generative AI, which were posted to a group on social media. Police say the student downloaded the photo from a social-media group that shared images of female athletes and asked the man to edit it, and that neither suspect knew the women.

Further images. Police say the man is also suspected of posting similar edits of three women in their 20s. About 3,800 obscene images and videos were found on his seized phone, and police were investigating whether he took other requests. The Yomiuri Shimbun, citing investigative sources, reports that police believe he made about 300 such images of women in athletics uniforms or gym clothes and posted about 100 to the group, about half of them at the student's request, and that he told investigators he was happy that the group enjoyed them.

Proceedings. The man was arrested on 1 August on suspicion of defamation and public display under the child pornography law; the student was referred to prosecutors. No charge decision or court outcome is reported.

What is not known. The reports do not name the AI tool or the social-media service, say how the women learned of the images, or describe their response.

Reported harm

According to Tokyo police, fake nude images made with generative AI from a woman's junior-high gym photo were posted to a social-media group, and the man is suspected of posting similar edits of three other women; police treat the posting as defamation.

How Harm Occurred

According to the police, a generative AI tool was used to turn real women's photos, including one taken when the woman was a junior-high pupil, into fake nude images that were posted to a social-media group, which police treat as defamation and public display of child pornography.

Outcome

Pending

The Metropolitan Police Department arrested the man on 1 August 2026 on suspicion of defamation and public display under the child prostitution and pornography law, and referred the 17-year-old student to prosecutors on the same suspicions (Sankei; the Yomiuri reported the referral to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office as planned for 3 August). Police said they were investigating whether the man took other requests. No charge decision or court outcome is reported.

What remains unknown

  • Which generative AI tool and which social-media service were used.
  • How the women learned of the images and how they responded.
  • How many other women are depicted in the roughly 300 images.
  • Whether prosecutors charge either suspect and what a court decides.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The investigating Tokyo police say the images were made by processing real women's photos with generative AI into fake nude images ('性的ディープフェイク'), and the man admitted the allegations according to both reports. The AI-generated depiction of the woman, posted to a social-media group, is the harm police treat as defamation. The tool is not named and the technical basis of the police finding is not described.

Woman says a classmate sent an AI-undressed image of her to his contacts; he says his account was hacked, and police refused a case pending an examination

A 23-year-old woman told the news site Kaktus.media that in July 2026 she learned that acquaintances had received a nude image of her made with AI from her photograph, and that the sender was a classmate. She says he first told her an app had generated and sent the image by itself, then admitted that he had undressed her Instagram photo through AI himself. In a written statement to the outlet the accused says he used a Telegram bot offering AI photo processing in May or June 2022 and was shocked by the result, and that the images were sent from his Telegram account on the night of 11 to 12 July 2026 by people who had hacked it. The woman says she suffered severe psychological stress and harm to her reputation. She filed a complaint with a district police department on 21 July; after she complained to the prosecutor's office the matter moved to another district department. That department told Kaktus.media that, because the review period expired before expert results arrived, it had refused to open a criminal case and had ordered a new examination. Her lawyer says four motions filed on 5 August have gone unanswered.

Muar, Johor: three boys were expelled from a Chinese secondary school for using AI to make indecent deepfake images of female classmates; some images spread online and at least two girls lodged police reports

In early December 2025 a Chinese secondary school in Muar, Johor, expelled three male pupils in Forms 2, 3 and 4 after finding they had used AI software to composite several female classmates' faces onto indecent images, some of which had spread online. The school said it was told of the images on Monday 1 December, investigated immediately, met the parents of all pupils involved, expelled the three under its rules with a stated zero-tolerance policy, and urged victims to lodge police reports and parents to delete any such images. The boys' parents accepted the decision. At least two girls lodged police reports; the Muar district police chief confirmed reports had been received, that the boys had been summoned to assist the investigation, and that an investigation was under way. No charge or later outcome has been reported.

Kulai, Johor: a 16-year-old pupil was arrested and charged after AI-edited nude images of schoolmates and alumni, including minors, were sold online at RM2 each; police logged 29 victim reports and the principal resigned

In April 2025 Johor police arrested a 16-year-old pupil of a private Chinese independent secondary school in Kulai district after an 18-year-old woman reported on 3 April that nude images edited with her face were circulating on social media and being offered for sale. Police said the boy used an AI application to edit photos taken from victims' social media accounts and sold the images at RM2 each; a phone was seized and a 19-year-old was later remanded alongside him. Eight victim reports at the time of the arrest on 8 April grew to 22 by 12 April and 29 by 15 April. The Deputy Communications Minister, who is also the Kulai MP, said on 9 April that most victims were alumni but some were current pupils as young as 14, and on 12 April that 38 people had been identified, the youngest 12 or 13, and her office helped victims lodge reports. A female pupil's viral post said a Telegram chat room of more than 200 members shared the composites and that the school had initially treated the matter as a minor infraction; the school board expelled the boy, acknowledged its slow handling, offered counselling and legal aid, and the principal resigned on 12 April. On 23 April 2025 the boy pleaded guilty at the Kulai Magistrate's Court to possessing 14 pornographic images and not guilty to a charge under Section 5 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 of producing sexual abuse material by editing a 17-year-old classmate's image; no verdict on that charge has been found.

University of Hong Kong: a law student made about 700 indecent AI-generated images of some 20 to 30 classmates and teachers; the privacy watchdog opened then closed a criminal probe

In February 2025 a University of Hong Kong (HKU) law student was found, by friends who saw the files on his laptop, to have used free online AI software to make about 700 indecent and deepfake images of some 20 to 30 women, including university and former schoolmates and secondary-school teachers, using photos taken from their social media. Victims went public in July 2025, and HKU's initial response, a warning letter and a demand that he apologise, drew wide criticism. Hong Kong's Privacy Commissioner opened a criminal investigation on 15 July 2025 but announced on 17 December 2025 that it was ending the probe for insufficient evidence, as no victim was willing to provide further information. Hong Kong law criminalised distribution, not creation, of such images.
