Semarang court jails university student for a year over AI-edited sexual images made with faces from the student's former high school
In October 2025 indecent photos and videos showing the faces of female students and at least one teacher of a public high school in Semarang, Central Java, spread on X from the account of a university student in Semarang who had attended the school. Kompas described the videos as made with AI editing. The student posted an apology on the school's Instagram account saying the student had edited and uploaded friends' photos and videos without permission. Central Java police's cyber directorate investigated, named the student a suspect and took the student into custody on 13 November 2025; the police spokesman said investigators had established the elements of an AI-based pornography offence that also breached the electronic information and transactions law. On 5 March 2026 Semarang District Court sentenced the student to one year in prison and a 2-billion-rupiah fine, more than the seven months prosecutors had sought. According to ANTARA, the court found that the student had produced 1,100 pornographic photo and video files, that the content remained publicly accessible and that the editing caused the victims psychological trauma. Both sides said they would consider the verdict; no appeal outcome was found.

AI system as recorded: AI image and video editing used to put real people's faces into pornographic photos and videos (tool not named in the inspected reports)
What Happened
What spread. In October 2025 photos and videos showing the faces of female students and at least one teacher of a public high school in Semarang, edited into indecent content, spread on X from the account of a university student in Semarang who had attended the school. Kompas described the videos as products of AI editing and reported on 20 October that Central Java police had opened an inquiry handled by their cyber directorate.
The student's apology. According to Kompas, the student posted a video apology on the school's official Instagram account, saying the student had edited and uploaded photos and videos of friends on the student's X account without their permission.
Police action. Central Java police named the student a suspect and took the student into custody on 13 November 2025 after questioning. The police spokesman said on 14 November that investigators had established the elements of an AI-based pornography offence that also breached the electronic information and transactions law; ANTARA's report of the detention says the suspect was suspected of using artificial intelligence to edit female students' faces into pornographic content. The inspected reports do not say how investigators established that AI was used.
Verdict. On 5 March 2026 Semarang District Court found the student guilty under Article 407(1) of the 2023 Criminal Code and sentenced the student to one year in prison and a 2-billion-rupiah fine, to be replaced by 15 days' detention if unpaid, more than the seven months prosecutors had sought. According to ANTARA, the court considered that the student had produced 1,100 photo and video files classed as pornography, that the content remained publicly accessible with its digital traces still present, and that the editing caused the victims psychological trauma. Both the prosecution and the defence said they would consider the verdict.
What is not known. The AI tools used, the number of people depicted, the victims' ages and whether either side appealed are not stated in the inspected reports.
Reported harm
Female students, alumni and at least one teacher of a Semarang high school had their faces edited with AI into pornographic photos and videos posted on X; the court found the content caused them psychological trauma and remained publicly accessible.
How Harm Occurred
A former pupil used AI editing to put the faces of female students, alumni and at least one teacher of the old school into pornographic photos and videos and posted them on X, where they spread; the court found the content caused the victims psychological trauma.
Outcome
UnknownCentral Java police detained the student on 13 November 2025. Semarang District Court found the student guilty under Article 407(1) of the 2023 Criminal Code on 5 March 2026 and imposed one year in prison and a 2-billion-rupiah fine (15 days' detention if unpaid); prosecutors had sought seven months. Both sides said they would consider the verdict; whether either appealed was not found.
What remains unknown
- The AI tools used and how the police established that AI was used.
- How many people were depicted and how many were minors.
- When the material was first posted; the inspected reports date its spread only to October 2025.
- Whether the prosecution or the defence appealed the March 2026 verdict.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. Central Java police, who investigated the case and examined the suspect's phone, said investigators had established the elements of an AI-based pornography offence, and ANTARA's report of the detention says the suspect was suspected of using artificial intelligence to edit female students' faces into pornographic content; Semarang District Court convicted the student in a case ANTARA describes as producing pornographic content with AI. The AI-edited images put real students' faces and at least one teacher's face into sexual content, which the court found caused the victims trauma. The technical basis of the police finding is not disclosed in the inspected reports, and the tool is not named.

Solo and Semarang, Indonesia: a university student's face was composited with AI onto pornographic images and a video by her ex-boyfriend and posted online; the suspect was detained after a nearly seven-month investigation
A female student at a state university in Solo (Surakarta), Central Java, learned on 1 January 2026 from friends that her face had been composited onto pornographic images and a video, which her lawyer said were found on Instagram and Telegram. Her family reported the case to the Central Java regional police cyber directorate on 28 January 2026. Police issued a formal police report on 31 July, arrested her ex-boyfriend, a university student in Semarang, at his boarding house in Gunungpati on 4 August 2026, and detained him. The police spokesman said the suspect used AI to place the complainant's face on another woman's naked body so that she appeared in pornographic content, uploaded it to his X account, did not sell it, and acted out of resentment after an on-and-off relationship ended. He faces charges under Articles 51 and 35 of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and an article printed by two outlets as 'Law No. 1 of 2026', with a maximum of 12 years' imprisonment. Her lawyer said she could not sleep, withdrew, felt shame and at one point lost hope, that his team had found seven women in total allegedly targeted of whom six had not reported, and that the suspect's parents asked for an out-of-court settlement; police said only one complainant was confirmed.
Cileungsi, Bogor Regency, Indonesia: photographs of private-school pupils taken from social media were turned into AI pornographic images and videos, reportedly since 2025; three pupils have filed a joint police report, the victims' lawyer says hundreds were affected, and two former pupils are named as suspects
Bogor Regency police confirmed on 18 September 2026 that they are investigating a report that pupils of a private school in Cileungsi had their faces edited with artificial intelligence into pornographic content. The head of the women-and-children unit told Kumparan that so far three pupils had reported in a single police report, that the case began when a victim heard from a friend that someone was making content with their face using AI technology, and that investigators were still establishing who made the content and which program was used, under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law. A lawyer for the witnesses, quoted by Pojok Bogor and Uzone, says the victims number in the hundreds; that two former pupils, one as initiator and one as maker, have been reported and admitted the acts to witnesses; that police found thousands of suspected AI-manipulated photos and videos on a suspect's phone, some uploaded to websites including an online-gambling site; and that the case, reported on 19 May 2026, is believed to have run since 2025 while all involved were still pupils, some victims now being university students. Police say the case is at an early stage and asked the public not to draw conclusions.
Ribera Alta, Valencia: a 17-year-old was investigated for making AI-generated nude images and videos of 16 schoolmates, impersonating a girl on fake accounts and advertising the images for sale
In December 2024 a female student in the Ribera Alta area of Valencia province reported to the Guardia Civil that a social-media account had been created in her name featuring an AI-generated video, and later a second account in her name, other accounts showing AI-generated nude videos, and a webpage advertising the images for commercial purposes; the Guardia Civil said the photos, all of minors, had been manipulated so that the people in them appeared completely naked. After 15 other minors came forward with similar complaints, officers traced IP addresses and account emails to the home of a 17-year-old schoolmate, who is being investigated on suspicion of corrupting minors under a Valencia youth court. The Guardia Civil announced the investigation on 27 July 2025.
Ahmedabad, Gujarat: a 27-year-old Delhi man was arrested for posting AI-morphed obscene images and videos of a young woman and her mother (more than 100 images found) on fake accounts in her name after she declined his friendship, while posing as the friend reporting the fake accounts for her
On 28 May 2026 the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch announced the arrest in north-east Delhi of a 27-year-old man who posts religious discourse videos online. Police allege that after meeting a young Ahmedabad woman with a public social-media profile through religious conversations on Instagram and being refused friendship, he stalked her online from December 2025 to April 2026, created fake accounts in her name (three Instagram accounts and a YouTube channel at first; eight to ten across X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube were found on his phone), downloaded photographs of her and her mother, used websites found by searching "AI remove clothes" to generate morphed obscene images and videos of the two women, and posted them with obscene captions to damage her reputation; investigators say more than 100 AI-morphed images of the complainant were found. Officers told ThePrint and ANI that she had confided in him about the accounts and that he told her to keep quiet and claimed to be reporting the accounts and getting hers reinstated. She complained to the Cyber Crime Police Station; an FIR was registered on 6 April 2026 under BNS Sections 78(2) and 356(2) and IT Act Sections 66(C) and 67, and the accused was traced through technical surveillance and arrested under the Branch's "Mission Cyber Rakshika" campaign. The complainant said she was mentally harassed and defamed; the DCP said the images also depicted her maternal aunt. Further investigation was under way; no charge sheet or court outcome was found.
