Santiago, Chile: appeals court orders a private school to expel pupils over nude images of four classmates that the school says were made with AI

In February 2024 the parents of a 15-year-old pupil at a private school in Santiago, Chile, reported that classmates had taken a photo of her face and inserted it into images of naked bodies; three other girls were also targeted. The school, which described the case as one of images generated with artificial intelligence, placed the pupils involved on conditional enrolment. Parents of the four girls brought protection actions, and in August 2024 the Santiago Court of Appeals found the school's measure illegal and arbitrary, said keeping the aggressors at the school caused the victims psychological harm, and ordered it to cancel four pupils' enrolment for 2025. The school first said it would appeal, then announced it would comply.

AI system as recorded: Artificial intelligence used to insert classmates' faces into images of naked bodies, according to the school's own statement and the reports of the court case (tool not identified)

What Happened

The images. El Mostrador reports that in February 2024 the parents of a 15-year-old pupil reported that classmates had taken a photo of her face and inserted it into images of naked bodies, a technique known as a deepfake, and that three other girls were also targeted. El Dínamo reports that the school placed the pupils involved (five in second year of secondary and one in eighth grade) on conditional enrolment.

The court. The parents of four girls brought protection actions. The Santiago Court of Appeals found that the school acted illegally and arbitrarily by imposing conditional enrolment where its rules required cancellation, said that keeping the aggressors at the school the girls attend causes them psychological harm, and found that their public exposure through sexual images gravely affected their privacy. It ordered the school to cancel four pupils' enrolment for 2025.

The school. The school described the matter as the case of images generated with artificial intelligence and first said it would appeal to the Supreme Court. In a letter to its community reported on 16 August 2024, it said it would not appeal and would comply with the ruling.

Which tool was used, and whether any criminal proceeding followed, is not reported in the sources read.

Reported harm

According to the parents and the Santiago Court of Appeals as reported, classmates inserted four girls' faces into images of naked bodies; the court said the girls' exposure gravely affected their privacy and that keeping the aggressors at school caused them psychological harm.

Outcome

Resolved

The Santiago Court of Appeals upheld the parents' protection actions (August 2024), declared the school's conditional-enrolment measure of 26 April illegal and arbitrary and ordered it to cancel four pupils' enrolment for the 2025 school year. The school announced an appeal to the Supreme Court and then, in a letter reported on 16 August 2024, said it would not appeal and would comply.

What remains unknown

  • Which tool was used and how the school established it.
  • Whether a criminal complaint was filed and with what result.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The school, which investigated and disciplined the pupils, itself called the matter the case of images generated with artificial intelligence (statement relayed by El Mostrador); the parents report that classmates inserted the girls' faces into images of naked bodies, a technique the reports call a deepfake. Those generated images depicting the four girls are the harm the court addressed. The tool and the technical basis are not disclosed, and the court passages read do not themselves mention AI.

Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends

On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. Chile: Puente Alto students find AI-made fake nude images of female classmates, families say; school suspends those involved, Superintendency investigates

Teletrece reported on 3 October 2026 that on 10 July 2026 female students at a secondary school in Puente Alto, Chile, found fake sexual images of themselves and other students on a classmate's phone. Families say the images were made with AI tools from ordinary photos the girls had posted on Instagram, that four students took part in obtaining, editing and circulating them, and that the material reached other students. Some of the girls had panic attacks, according to their parents. The school suspended the students identified as responsible for 15 days; after their return, parents say, they mocked the girls, a fight followed, and a parent accuses the father of one of the students involved of threats and of loitering near the school, after which she says they filed reports with the PDI. The Superintendencia de Educación confirmed a formal investigation of the school.

Seoul: doctoral student sentenced to 18 months for 1,141 AI-manipulated sexual images of seven laboratory colleagues

On 10 September 2026 the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced a 30-year-old Chinese national doctoral student to 18 months in prison for habitually producing manipulated sexual images of seven women who worked in his university research laboratory. Investigators found 1,141 files made over about six months from November 2025, and search records for ways to bypass the safeguards of the generative AI Grok; the court found no evidence of distribution. A lawyer for five of the victims said they continued to suffer fear, trauma and distress. Prosecutors had sought three years and public disclosure of his identity, which the court declined.

Kulai, Johor: a 16-year-old pupil was arrested and charged after AI-edited nude images of schoolmates and alumni, including minors, were sold online at RM2 each; police logged 29 victim reports and the principal resigned

In April 2025 Johor police arrested a 16-year-old pupil of a private Chinese independent secondary school in Kulai district after an 18-year-old woman reported on 3 April that nude images edited with her face were circulating on social media and being offered for sale. Police said the boy used an AI application to edit photos taken from victims' social media accounts and sold the images at RM2 each; a phone was seized and a 19-year-old was later remanded alongside him. Eight victim reports at the time of the arrest on 8 April grew to 22 by 12 April and 29 by 15 April. The Deputy Communications Minister, who is also the Kulai MP, said on 9 April that most victims were alumni but some were current pupils as young as 14, and on 12 April that 38 people had been identified, the youngest 12 or 13, and her office helped victims lodge reports. A female pupil's viral post said a Telegram chat room of more than 200 members shared the composites and that the school had initially treated the matter as a minor infraction; the school board expelled the boy, acknowledged its slow handling, offered counselling and legal aid, and the principal resigned on 12 April. On 23 April 2025 the boy pleaded guilty at the Kulai Magistrate's Court to possessing 14 pornographic images and not guilty to a charge under Section 5 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 of producing sexual abuse material by editing a 17-year-old classmate's image; no verdict on that charge has been found.
