Rio de Janeiro: private school tells parents pupils used AI to make fake nude images of girls; police open inquiry with at least 20 victims
In late October 2023, fake nude images of girls at a private school in Rio de Janeiro circulated in messaging groups and on social media. Families said pupils in years 7 to 9 had used an artificial intelligence tool to put the faces of pupils aged 14 to 16 onto photos of naked bodies. The school sent parents a notice about pupils using AI to make intimate photo montages and said disciplinary measures would follow. The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police child-protection unit (DPCA) opened an inquiry; its head said the pupils were suspected of making fake nudes with AI and that more than 20 victims had been identified, including girls from other schools. A mother said the girls were having anxiety attacks and crying. The inquiry was placed under seal because minors were involved; its outcome is not known.

AI system as recorded: An artificial intelligence tool or app that placed girls' faces onto naked bodies, according to the school's notice to parents, the police unit's head and the families (tool not identified)
What Happened
The images. From Friday 27 October 2023, altered photos showing girls from a private school in Rio de Janeiro naked circulated in WhatsApp groups and on social media. According to the families, pupils in years 7 to 9 used an artificial intelligence tool to place the faces of pupils aged 14 to 16 on photos of naked models. Itatiaia reports that the suspects are said to have downloaded an app, inserted the victims' photos and spread the results.
The school. Revista Oeste reports that the school sent parents a notice about pupils using artificial intelligence to make intimate photo montages of female pupils, regretting that a tool "created to solve problems and support modern life" had been used this way. The school said it was examining the facts and would apply the disciplinary measures in its rules, without saying which.
The police. Parents went to the police. The Civil Police child-protection unit (DPCA) opened an inquiry, the first case of its kind registered there. According to Revista Oeste, the unit's head said the pupils were suspected of making fake nudes with AI and that more than 20 victims had been identified, including girls who do not attend the school. The inquiry was placed under seal because minors were involved.
Effects. A mother told O Globo, as relayed by Gazeta do Povo, that the girls were having anxiety attacks and crying, that the pupils responsible remained in class with them, and that families feared the images would reach adult websites. Which app was used, what the inquiry found and what measures followed are not known.
Reported harm
According to the school, the police unit's head and the families, pupils used an AI tool to make fake nude images of at least 20 girls that circulated among pupils; a mother said the girls were having anxiety attacks and crying.
Outcome
UnknownThe DPCA of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police opened an inquiry after parents complained; it was placed under seal because minors were involved, and police also examined whether girls at other schools were targeted. The school said it would apply disciplinary measures under its rules. The outcome of the inquiry and of the school measures was not found.
What remains unknown
- Which app was used and how the school and police established it.
- What the sealed inquiry found and what disciplinary or legal measures followed.
- The exact number of girls depicted.

Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends
On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. The tool is not named. The juveniles are not named in any report.
Chile: Puente Alto students find AI-made fake nude images of female classmates, families say; school suspends those involved, Superintendency investigates
Teletrece reported on 3 October 2026 that on 10 July 2026 female students at a secondary school in Puente Alto, Chile, found fake sexual images of themselves and other students on a classmate's phone. Families say the images were made with AI tools from ordinary photos the girls had posted on Instagram, that four students took part in obtaining, editing and circulating them, and that the material reached other students. Some of the girls had panic attacks, according to their parents. The school suspended the students identified as responsible for 15 days; after their return, parents say, they mocked the girls, a fight followed, and a parent accuses the father of one of the students involved of threats and of loitering near the school, after which she says they filed reports with the PDI. The Superintendencia de Educación confirmed a formal investigation of the school.
Edmonton: two 14-year-old junior high students charged with making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials and voyeurism after police allege they used AI software to sexualise photos of female classmates taken at school without consent and from social media
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation unit announced on 17 June 2026 that two 14-year-old boys at an Edmonton junior high school had been charged on 1 June with making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials and voyeurism. Police allege the boys took photos of girls at their school without consent and from the girls' social media accounts and used AI software to sexualise them; several students were identified as victims and police said the number could be more than ten pending forensic review. A teacher reported the matter to police in late March 2026 after students complained. Police said the evidence so far indicates the images were shared between the two boys rather than more widely, but that word of their existence spread through the school. The lead investigator said the girls were left with intense shame and embarrassment and that some are now too scared to post on social media. The software has not been identified; the school and the accused are not named to protect the victims. CBC, Global News, CTV News and The Canadian Press covered the release and news conference.
Seoul: doctoral student sentenced to 18 months for 1,141 AI-manipulated sexual images of seven laboratory colleagues
On 10 September 2026 the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced a 30-year-old Chinese national doctoral student to 18 months in prison for habitually producing manipulated sexual images of seven women who worked in his university research laboratory. Investigators found 1,141 files made over about six months from November 2025, and search records for ways to bypass the safeguards of the generative AI Grok; the court found no evidence of distribution. A lawyer for five of the victims said they continued to suffer fear, trauma and distress. Prosecutors had sought three years and public disclosure of his identity, which the court declined.
