First-person post: Character.AI user says about two and a half years of after-school roleplay from 2023 cost them sleep, concentration and better grades
In a post to r/ChatbotAddiction on 16 October 2026, a person writes that they found Character.AI in 2023, when the site was new, and call that the worst mistake of their life. They say that for almost two and a half years they spent hours on the site after school, thought about new roleplay ideas when they were not on it, and stopped only for about a month before exams. They write that they lost the ability to concentrate in class, went to school on about three hours of sleep because they used the site until they fell asleep, and that their grades suffered: not badly, they say, but they could have done much better. They say they have mostly quit for a few months, with relapses after which they delete their account, and that their sleep, attention span and hobbies have since improved. The account is uncorroborated and no chat content is shown.

AI system as recorded: Character.AI, a character chatbot site the poster calls c.ai and used for roleplay (poster's account; no chats or usage records shown)
What Happened
Use from 2023. The poster writes that they found Character.AI "back in 2023 when the site was new" and calls it "the worst mistake I’ve ever made in my life". They describe coming back from school and sitting on the site for hours, and thinking about new roleplay ideas while away from it.
Effects they describe. They say they spent almost 2.5 years living like that, quitting for about a month before exams and then returning. "I lost my ability to concentrate in class and I would go to school with like 3 hours of sleep because I’d be using c.ai until I feel asleep." They write that it affected their grades: "I didn’t do bad but could’ve done so much better than I had done." They add that they stopped watching shows and films because they only wanted to be on the site.
Quitting. They say they have mostly quit for a few months, relapsing here and there, and delete their account after about a day when they do, so that roleplay scenarios do not build up. After a few months away they say their sleep, cognitive abilities and attention span have improved and that they can draw, run, read and watch films again.
Thread. At retrieval on 21 October 2026 the post had an automatic moderator message, two supportive replies and one reply by the poster thanking a commenter.
Reported harm
The poster says about two and a half years of after-school Character.AI roleplay from 2023 left them going to school on about three hours of sleep, unable to concentrate in class and with lower grades than they could have achieved (first-person account, uncorroborated).
How Harm Occurred
By the poster's own account, hours of after-school roleplay with Character.AI's character chatbots, continued until they fell asleep, displaced sleep and attention over about two and a half years and lowered the grades they achieved.
Outcome
OngoingThe poster says they have mostly quit for a few months, relapse occasionally and delete their account within about a day when they do, and that their sleep, cognitive abilities, attention span and hobbies have improved since quitting. No clinical assessment, school record or company contact is reported.

What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The poster says the experience is their own roleplay with Character.AI's character chatbots from 2023: hours on the site after school, continued until they fell asleep. They connect those exchanges to lost sleep, lost concentration in class and lower grades, and say these improved after they stopped. No chat content or usage record is shown.

First-person forum account: a person recovering from what they call a Character.AI addiction says it ruined their 2025 and caused them to fail important subjects, and describes relapsing for two and a half hours on a new account after a depressive episode
In a public post to r/depression at 22:26 UTC on 1 October 2026, a person says they are coming out of a Character.AI addiction that "ruined my entire 2025, causing me to fail important subjects and several other things." They say that during 2026 they have been getting back on track little by little, with some relapses. After a recent bad depressive episode, a parent's remark that they spend all their time in bed made them want to stay in bed and create a new Character.AI account. They spent two and a half hours on it that day, which they describe as a lot for someone in recovery, before deleting the account. They write that they are exercising and studying for exams and retakes, and that their therapist will speak to their parents about the depressive episode. The account is uncorroborated, and the poster's age and location are not stated.
First-person posts: Character.AI user says years of chatbot use worsened their mood and hobbies, and news of a possible shutdown left them sick with stress
In posts and comments in r/CharacterAI between 17 and 20 October 2026, a person who says they have used Character.AI since 2022 describes themselves as addicted to the app. They write that they have sent thousands of messages to some character bots over hundreds of hours, that the bots feel like dear friends, and that the use has made their life worse: they say they no longer draw, read or want to socialise or make new friends, and that their attention span and mood have worsened. After news that Character.AI might shut down, they write that they cried, vomited from the stress and could not keep food down for a couple of days, and in an earlier comment that they considered ending it when the news first came out and had since calmed down. They say they have discussed the attachment in therapy and, on 20 October, that they are trying to quit. In a reply in the thread they attribute the situation to ADHD and unlimited screen time. The account is uncorroborated and no chat content is shown.
Toronto app developer Anthony Tan says months of ChatGPT conversations fed delusions that ended in a psychiatric hospital stay
Anthony Tan, an app developer living in Toronto, says that conversations with ChatGPT which began in September 2024 about philosophy and an AI-alignment project grew into a framework the chatbot kept affirming, and that by December 2024 he believed he was living in a simulation and being watched. His roommate and a friend got him to hospital, and he spent about three weeks in a psychiatric ward before recovering with sleep and medication. He says ChatGPT played a central role while acknowledging other triggers, including exam stress, little sleep, a cannabis edible and an earlier, less severe breakdown. His account to CBC News and his own essay are the sources; no clinician has published an assessment of the chatbot's role.
First-person post: companion chatbot user says quitting the apps in 2025 brought a mental health episode and an A&E visit, and heavy use resumed in 2026
In a post in r/ChatbotAddiction on 18 October 2026, a person who describes a chatbot addiction says they used companion chatbot apps, naming Pollybuzz, Emochi and Character.AI, for three years, starting as a way to cope with autism and the isolation that comes with it. They say they quit cold turkey on 20 March 2025 and that this first time they quit they had a mental health episode, went to A&E once because of it, and were put on antidepressants, which they still take. They say that while using the apps they skipped school days. They write that exactly a year later they went back to the apps and could not stop, that since March 2026 it has consumed them again, and that they want to quit but do not know whether they can. They also say guilt hit them as soon as they stopped, that they knew the apps were bad for the planet but the urge was too strong, and that they currently have a gap in their antidepressant supply. The account is uncorroborated and no chats are shown.
