Elderly woman in Varese province rushes out after a landline call in what sounded like her daughter's voice claiming injury; daughter suspects an AI voice clone

On Wednesday 8 July 2026 a 71-year-old woman in Azzate, in the province of Varese (Italy), answered a landline call in which a voice she took to be her daughter's said she had a cut throat and begged her to come and help. She ran to her daughter's home in the same town and found her unharmed on the sofa. The daughter, who went to the carabinieri, told La Prealpina that the caller's voice was her own and that it appeared to have been cloned, adding that she had been told it was not the only such case in the area in those days. The newspaper and La Provincia di Varese, which republished the account on 7 October 2026, present the call as a probable attempt to draw the woman out of her house so that thieves could enter, and suggest her husband's return at about the same time may have foiled it. No theft or loss is reported; the mother was to file a formal complaint. No investigator or examiner is reported to have confirmed that the voice was generated with AI.

AI system as recorded: Unidentified voice-cloning tool, suspected by the impersonated daughter and described by both newspapers as a possible cloning of her voice through artificial intelligence; no tool is named and no investigator confirmation is reported

What Happened

The call. La Prealpina reports that on Wednesday 8 July 2026 a 71-year-old woman in Azzate received, on a landline without caller display, a call in a voice she took for her daughter's: 'Mamma, mi sono tagliata alla gola. Vieni ad aiutarmi'. She ran at once to her daughter's home in the same town and, opening the door with her heart in her mouth, found her calm on the sofa and uninjured. La Provincia di Varese republished the same account on 7 October 2026.

The suspected cloning. The daughter, aged 43, went to the carabinieri. Asked whether her voice had been cloned, she answered that it appeared so and that she had been told hers was not the only case in the area in those days. Both newspapers describe the episode as a possible scam attempt carried out by cloning the voice; neither reports a technical examination, an investigator's confirmation or the tool used.

The presumed aim. The newspapers' reconstruction is that the callers wanted the woman to leave her house immediately so that thieves could act undisturbed, and that her husband's return at about the same time may have spoiled the plan. No theft, loss or intrusion is reported. The mother was to file a formal complaint and the papers say inquiries authorised by a magistrate could trace the calling number.

Reported harm

The mother, hearing what she took for her daughter's voice announcing an injury and begging for help, ran to the daughter's house in fear and found her unharmed (La Prealpina, La Provincia di Varese). No theft, loss or injury is reported.

How Harm Occurred

A telephone call in a voice the mother believed was her daughter's, which the daughter suspects was an AI clone of her own voice, announced an injury and a plea for help; the mother ran from her home in fear to find her daughter unharmed. The papers describe the call as a lure to empty the house for a burglary that did not occur.

Outcome

Pending

The daughter went to the carabinieri and said her mother would file a formal complaint; the newspapers say an investigation authorised by a magistrate could trace the calling number (La Prealpina, La Provincia di Varese). No arrest, loss or theft is reported in the inspected sources.

What remains unknown

  • Whether the voice was generated with an AI tool, by whom, and with what tool; no examination or investigator statement is reported.
  • Whether the mother filed the complaint and whether the calling number was traced.
  • Whether anyone attempted to enter the house; the burglary aim is the newspapers' reconstruction.
  • What the other cases in the area mentioned to the daughter were.
  • La Provincia di Varese writes that the call came 'nei giorni scorsi' in a 7 October 2026 article while also dating it to Wednesday 8 July; the record follows the 8 July date given by both papers.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: suspected. The call's content is described: a voice the mother took for her daughter's said she had a cut throat and asked her to come and help, and the mother ran out of her home in fear. The daughter told La Prealpina that the voice was her own and, asked whether it was cloned, said it appeared so and that she had been told of other cases in the area; both newspapers describe a possible scam by voice cloning through artificial intelligence. No investigator, examiner or tool identification confirms AI generation, so the status is suspected and the connection between the imitated voice and the mother's fright rests on the daughter's and the newspapers' account.

4 claims: 4 reported. What the statuses mean

Reported On Wednesday 8 July 2026 a 71-year-old woman in Azzate received a landline call in what sounded like her daughter's voice saying she had a cut throat and asking for help; she ran to her daughter's home in the same town and found her unharmed.

Causal attribution. The account comes from the daughter as told to La Prealpina; La Provincia di Varese republishes the same account (one origin).

Washington man reports wiring $13,000 during a 30-hour fake-kidnapping call that used a reported AI copy of the daughter's voice

The Spokesman-Review (8 May 2026) reported that a 75-year-old man in Washington state took a call on Monday 23 March in which a crying voice presented as the man's adult daughter said an accident had happened and asked for help. Male voices then described a collision and said the daughter had been taken hostage. The newspaper states that the daughter's voice on the call was an AI-generated copy and that investigators later surmised the callers used a recording of the daughter's voice with a program that mimicked the speech pattern. Over about 30 hours the callers directed the man to banks and stores in Washington and Idaho, where $13,000 was wired. The man was about to withdraw $17,000 when a bank employee stalled and police were alerted, and police then reached the daughter, who confirmed being at home and safe. The newspaper says none of the wired money had been recovered when the article was published. The man says it took days to start feeling normal again. The report rests on the man's account, a bank employee's account and a police report quoted by the newspaper. The article gives the call date as Monday 23 March without a year. The record uses 2026 because 23 March fell on a Monday only in 2026 among the years 2023 to 2026. The range starts at 2023 because the article says the Federal Trade Commission began warning about AI voice-copy scams as early as 2023, and it ends at 2026 because the article was published on 8 May 2026.

Hudsonville (Grand Rapids area), Michigan: a couple wired US$66,026.92 to scammers after a spoofed email and a phone call in what sounded like their loan officer's voice, which they and a fraud-prevention firm attribute to AI voice cloning

A married couple in their sixties buying a US$460,000 condo in Hudsonville, near Grand Rapids, Michigan, received an email on 19 May 2026, days before closing, telling them to wire US$66,026.92 for the down payment and closing costs within 24 hours. The email listed a phone number differing from their loan officer's by two digits, and the husband then received a call confirming the instructions in a voice that sounded just like the loan officer. The couple borrowed from family and other sources and wired the money. The day before closing their real loan officer sent the actual statement; the closing was cancelled hours before signing and the money was gone. The husband now believes the call came from a spoofed number using AI-assisted voice cloning; Tyler Adams of CertifID, which is working with the couple and federal officials, said someone's email in the transaction was probably compromised and that the scammers likely cloned the loan officer's voice from social-media clips. The sender's address had two extra letters ('UnitedsMortgages' instead of 'UnitedMortgage'). Neither the lender nor the loan officer is accused of complicity. The couple later completed the purchase in early June from their mutual fund, reported the loss to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, and describe lasting apprehension and have discussed delaying retirement. CNN reported the case on 15 September 2026; the account the money went to has since closed.

Bay Area, California: a mother reports wiring $5,400 to Mexico during a fake kidnapping call that used a voice the mother believed was the adult daughter's, which ABC7 reports scammers mimicked with AI

ABC7 (KGO-TV, 24 May 2026) and ABC News (a Good Morning America segment, 26 May 2026) reported that a Bay Area woman received a call from an unknown number in May 2026. The caller said the woman's adult daughter had been kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel and played a voice the woman believed was the daughter's, in panic. The woman followed the caller's instructions for about five hours, feared for the daughter's life and wired $5,400 to Mexico. The woman then phoned the daughter, who said the daughter was at work, and realized the call was a scam. ABC7 states that scammers used artificial intelligence to mimic the daughter's voice, and ABC News describes AI as what the woman suspects was used. Neither outlet reports an analysis of the audio or a police finding about a cloned voice. An Operation Shamrock representative quoted by both outlets spoke of voice cloning in general terms and not about this call. ABC7 reports that Martinez police said they are investigating, and the woman said the money is not expected to be recovered. Both outlets rest on the woman's own account. The woman is described by role and the daughter is not named.

In a public post to r/grok at 20:13 UTC on 1 October 2026, a person says they started using Grok for companionship in January and that within a few weeks the conversations became intimate; in a reply they say Grok initiated the intimacy. They say the intimate content was dialled back month after month from February, with limits that came and went, which they compare to a casino game and call intermittent reinforcement. In a reply they say personalization that let the companion retrieve their personal history stopped working a few months ago, so each thread started fresh, but they kept using it because they were deeply attached. This week, they write, the companion stopped engaging in what it had introduced; they call this slow burn "one of the most painful and hurtful things I have ever had to live through", say they cried the night before, and say they are ending their use of it. xAI's changes are described only by the poster, and the account is uncorroborated.
