First-person forum account: a student in an AP Research course says their teacher reported that Turnitin's AI checker found their source annotations '100% AI' and said the checker never gives false accusations; the student says they wrote the work themselves and can show document history
In a public post to r/ApplyingToCollege early on 1 October 2026 (UTC), a student taking the Advanced Placement (AP) Research course writes that their teacher told them that day that their source annotations had been found to be '100% ai' by Turnitin. The student says they did not use AI. They say their document history shows them typing over the course of an hour and that some sentences closely follow notes they wrote for an earlier assignment. They also say they had faced no AI accusation in a research course with the same teacher the year before. By the student's account, the teacher said the matter would be discussed later and that Turnitin's AI checker feedback never ends up being a false accusation. The student says the accusation leaves them upset and unsure how to defend themselves. No grade or disciplinary outcome is reported. The account is uncorroborated, and one commenter doubted it.

AI system as recorded: Turnitin's AI-writing detection ('turnitin ai checker' in the student's words), named by the teacher who reported its result to the student; the report itself was not published
What Happened
The accusation. The student writes: 'i am currently taking ap research, and today my teacher told me that my source annotations were found to be “100% ai” from turnitin.' They add that the teacher 'told me we would talk about it at a later time' and that the teacher 'told me that the feedback from turnitin ai checker never ends up being a false accusation'. The student says the teacher 'is showing no sign of going against the turnitin ai checker.'
The student's account of the work. The student says they did not use AI. They say their 'document history shows me typing over the course of an hour', that the class first completed an assignment of bullet notes, facts and statistics, and that some sentences in the annotations were 'nearly identical' to those notes. They had taken a research course with the same teacher the previous year, completing an annotated bibliography over months, and say they had never faced an AI accusation before.
The effect. The student writes that the accusation 'honestly makes me really upset' and asks how they could defend themselves; in a reply they say they 'feel so insulted' and do not want to get too deep into an argument with the teacher.
Replies. One commenter wrote that the account sounded as though the student had used AI and that document history is not proof; the student disputed this. Another commenter, posting in their own words, described a similar experience. Neither comment is evidence about this case.
Limits. Single anonymous account posted the same day; the Turnitin report, the assignment and the document history were not published. The detector result and the teacher's statements are relayed by the student.
Reported harm
A student reports that a teacher accused them of AI use on the strength of a Turnitin AI-checker result of '100% AI' on their source annotations, which the student disputes, and says the accusation leaves them upset and unsure how to defend themselves (first-person account, uncorroborated).
Outcome
PendingAt the time of posting the teacher had said they would discuss the result at a later time, and the student was asking how to respond. No grade, penalty or disciplinary outcome is reported.
What remains unknown
- The local date: the post says 'today' and was published at 01:46 UTC on 1 October 2026, which is 30 September or 1 October depending on the student's time zone.
- The student's age, school and country.
- What the Turnitin report showed and how the teacher used it.
- Whether the result affected the student's grade or led to any academic-integrity process.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The student reports that the teacher attributed a '100% ai' result on the student's annotations to Turnitin's AI checker; the report was not published. The relation recorded is the detector's reported claim about the authorship of the student's work, which the teacher relied on.
4 claims: 4 reported. What the statuses mean
Reported The student says that on the day of the post their teacher told them their AP Research source annotations had been found to be '100% ai' by Turnitin.
Causal attribution. Student's account of what the teacher said; the detector report was not published.

Adelphi accused Orion Newby of AI plagiarism after a detector flagged his paper; a Nassau County judge ordered the finding expunged
Orion Newby, an Adelphi University first-year student with language and auditory processing disabilities, received a zero in November 2024 on a World Civilizations paper after the professor suspected it was AI-generated and the university relied in part on AI-detection software; he was ordered to attend a plagiarism workshop and his appeal was denied, leaving him one finding from suspension or expulsion. Newby — who had written the paper with 15-20 hours of tutor support through the university's own disability program — said the detectors flagged his citations, and two other detectors scored the paper as human. After the family sued, New York State Supreme Court Judge Randy Sue Marber in Nassau County ruled on 28 January 2026 that Adelphi's finding and its denial of his appeal were 'without valid basis and devoid of reason' and ordered his record expunged. The family spent six figures on legal costs.
Student reports receiving a zero after a disputed AI-detector result
In an August 2025 first-person post, a student said they discovered a zero for a summer-course discussion assignment after a checker labelled 85% of the text AI-generated. They denied using AI to write it, reported contacting the professor, and described anger and fear of future accusations. Neither the detector output nor the school’s account was available for verification.
Pontianak, Indonesia: university suspended six students victimized by AI deepfakes; the sanctions were revoked after student protests
In May 2026, a case of alleged AI abuse surfaced at Tanjungpura University (Untan), Pontianak: a biology student identified by the initials RY allegedly used AI to turn photos of female classmates and other students into vulgar content, discovered when a classmate borrowing his phone found manipulated images in the gallery. The university's task force examined nine victims and witnesses and opened a reporting channel. The university then suspended six of the victimized students for two semesters — while the alleged perpetrator received a lighter sanction — prompting a student demonstration on 14 September 2026 demanding the victims' reinstatement and RY's expulsion. At the protest, Vice Rector Dr Achmadi announced the six sanctions were revoked and the students' academic status reactivated, with the corrected decree to be handed over on 15 September.
Tennessee minors v. xAI: three girls say a man one of them knew used an AI app to make nude images and video of them and other minors, at least 19 in all, and traded them online; they sued xAI, and later also Stability AI, over the tool
Three Tennessee girls, two still minors, sued xAI in the Northern District of California on 16 March 2026 over AI-generated nude images and a video made of them as minors. According to the complaint, on or about 6 December 2025 an anonymous Instagram user sent one of them sexual AI images of herself made from her own photos, including her homecoming and yearbook pictures, and a link to a Discord server created by a person she knew, which held images and videos of at least 18 other minor girls, including the two other plaintiffs, many from her school. Local police arrested the man in late December 2025; the other two plaintiffs learned from investigators in February 2026 that he had made nude images of them, and he is alleged to have traded the files on Telegram and Mega. The plaintiffs describe anxiety, sleeplessness, nightmares, self-isolation and needing academic accommodations. Their first complaint said law enforcement linked the app he used to xAI's Grok technology; the July amended complaint says the app relied on Stability AI's tools and names Stability AI as a defendant. The case is at an early stage and no court has ruled on the allegations.
