Shanghai police say man posted AI-generated videos of his father gravely ill while borrowing over 1.7 million yuan from friends
Shanghai police said on 26 October 2026 that officers in Putuo district had detained a man on suspicion of fraud after police were called on 16 October to a dispute between him and people he owed money to; officers brought him and three creditors, whom police describe as his friends, to the station. According to the police account relayed by ThePaper and China News Service, from 2019 he had borrowed from classmates and friends on a series of false pretexts, later saying his father had cancer and then that his father had died, and the borrowing totalled more than 1.7 million yuan, nearly all lost on the stock market. Police said he confessed that every pretext was invented, and that to make the scam more credible he used AI to generate short videos of his father gravely ill in bed and posted them on his WeChat Moments feed; a Hong Kong relay of the police account words this more cautiously, saying the related photos and videos should be AI-generated, and adds that his father knew nothing of it. The tool used, how many people saw the videos and how much was borrowed after they were posted are not reported. The man is in criminal detention while the investigation continues.

What Happened
The police account. On 26 October 2026 the Shanghai Public Security Bureau told ThePaper, and China News Service reported, that police in Putuo district had broken a fraud case. On the evening of 16 October a police station in the district received a call reporting that the caller had found a man who owed money and that a dispute had broken out; patrol officers went to the scene and brought three creditors and the man to the station. Police said the man and the three were friends, and that from 2019 he had repeatedly borrowed from them on pretexts such as technology investment, marriage and a home purchase, and company cash flow. Later he said his father had cancer and needed urgent treatment, and then that his father had died and he needed funeral money. The borrowing grew to more than 1.7 million yuan.
The AI videos. Police said that when the man saw the scheme was exposed he confessed that all of the pretexts were invented to win his friends' sympathy, and that to make the scam more credible he had used AI to generate short videos of his father gravely ill in bed and posted them on his WeChat Moments feed. China News Service quotes an officer at the station giving the same account. HK01, relaying the police account and a mainland report, says that in February 2026 he posted photos and videos of himself caring for his father at a hospital bed, that on 17 August he said his father had died and kept asking friends for money, that his father knew nothing of it, and, in more cautious wording than the police account, that the related photos and videos should be AI-generated. ThePaper published a police-supplied screenshot it captions as a short video generated with AI.
The money. Police said checks of transfers and chat records showed that the money never went where he had said; nearly all of it was put into the stock market and lost. HK01 also reports that police found he ran six WeChat accounts playing a doctor, a superior, a cemetery manager, a lawyer and a woman in a relationship with a friend.
What is not known. The sources do not identify the AI tool, how many people saw the videos, how much was borrowed after they were posted or from whom, or how many people in total lent him money. The 1.7 million yuan total covers borrowing since 2019 on several pretexts, most of them made before the AI videos were posted.
Reported harm
Shanghai police say a man borrowed more than 1.7 million yuan from classmates and friends on invented pretexts since 2019, later claiming his father had cancer and had died, and that he posted AI-generated videos of his father gravely ill to make the story credible; the money was lost on the stock market. The share of the losses that followed the videos is not reported.
Outcome
OngoingPutuo police detained the man on suspicion of fraud; police said on 26 October 2026 that the case was under further investigation. No charge, trial or repayment is reported.
What remains unknown
- Which AI tool generated the videos.
- How many people saw the videos and how much was lent after they were posted; the 1.7 million yuan total covers borrowing since 2019 on several pretexts.

China: Shanghai woman loses 800,000 yuan to a fake army officer met on a matchmaking platform; Pudong police point to a sign of AI synthesis in her screenshot of him
In May 2026 a 50-year-old woman in Shanghai met a man on a matchmaking platform who said he was an army regiment commander about to retire and sent officer and identity card photos. He also made a video call on his own initiative, in which he quickly covered his face with his hand to show he was not using AI face-swap. He then steered her into a fake investment platform, and within about a month she put in 800,000 yuan, almost all of it borrowed, and could not withdraw it. A Pudong police anti-fraud officer said that AI synthesis could still be detected and that in her screenshot the man's thumb was clearly longer than a normal person's. The report gives no direct statement that face-swap software was used. The case was under further investigation.
Anqing, China: police say a nine-second AI face-swap video call posing as an acquaintance led a man to transfer 2.45 million yuan
In April 2023 a man in the Anqing economic development zone, Anhui, received a brief WeChat video call from someone who appeared to be an acquaintance, followed by a QQ message asking him to advance money for a tender; trusting the video call, he had family members transfer 2.45 million yuan. The local police anti-fraud centre found that the fraudsters had used a nine-second AI face-swap video to pose as the acquaintance, Dawan News reported. Police arrested three suspects on 28 April, froze or recovered more than one million yuan, and on 22 May returned 1.32 million yuan to the victim.

The police said the fraudster had used AI face-swapping to pose as the friend. At Fuzhou police's request, Baotou police and a local bank stopped 3.3684 million yuan within about ten minutes; 931,600 yuan had been moved on and was being pursued.
Bengaluru: police say a man paid Rs 1.85 lakh after a dating-app contact threatened to circulate an AI-manipulated obscene video of him
Deccan Herald reports, citing Bengaluru police, that a 23-year-old man lost Rs 1.85 lakh in an alleged sextortion scam. He matched with a woman on a dating app on 27 September 2026 and exchanged numbers; he told police that he then received a WhatsApp video call from her number lasting five to six seconds. Police said he then received an obscene video manipulated using AI and the sender threatened to circulate it unless he paid. Fearing exposure, he borrowed money from a friend and transferred Rs 1.85 lakh to several UPI IDs between 27 and 29 September as the threats continued, a police officer said. Police registered a first information report on his online cybercrime complaint and are trying to trace the suspects. The report does not say how police established that the video was AI-manipulated, and the tool is not named.
