In April 2023 a man in the Anqing economic development zone, Anhui, received a brief WeChat video call from someone who appeared to be an acquaintance, followed by a QQ message asking him to advance money for a tender; trusting the video call, he had family members transfer 2.45 million yuan. AI system as recorded: A nine-second AI face-swap video used in a WeChat video call to impersonate an acquaintance, according to police (tool not identified)

What Happened

The call. According to Dawan News, on 27 April 2023 a WeChat contact who appeared to be the man's acquaintance started a video call that showed the acquaintance in a meeting room and hung up after a few seconds, saying it was inconvenient to talk in a meeting. The 'acquaintance' then wrote on QQ that a project tender needed working capital and asked him to advance it. Because he had seen the face on a video call, he had family members transfer 2.45 million yuan to the account given, and learned of the fraud only when he later phoned the real acquaintance.

The police findings. Officers of the anti-fraud centre of the Anqing economic development zone police sub-bureau found that the fraudsters had used a nine-second AI face-swap video to pose as the acquaintance. A police team tracing the account funds arrested three suspects in another province on 28 April, seized 26 phones and froze or recovered more than one million yuan; the three were suspected of helping move nearly one million yuan of criminal proceeds. On 22 May police returned 1.32 million yuan to the victim, and the case remained under investigation. China National Radio later summarised the case in the same terms.

Reported harm

According to the police findings reported by Dawan News, a man transferred 2.45 million yuan after a nine-second AI face-swap video call posing as an acquaintance; 1.32 million yuan was later returned to him.

What remains unknown

  • Which AI tool was used and how police established the face swap.

  • Whether the three suspects, who were suspected of moving proceeds, or anyone who made the video was charged or convicted.
  • How the acquaintance's WeChat identity was used.

What the evidence supports

The faked acquaintance appeared to the victim, and the same account then asked for money (depicted_or_impersonated, communicated_with). The police do not disclose how the face swap was established or which tool was used.

China: Shanghai woman loses 800,000 yuan to a fake army officer met on a matchmaking platform; Pudong police point to a sign of AI synthesis in her screenshot of him

In May 2026 a 50-year-old woman in Shanghai met a man on a matchmaking platform who said he was an army regiment commander about to retire and sent officer and identity card photos. He also made a video call on his own initiative, in which he quickly covered his face with his hand to show he was not using AI face-swap. He then steered her into a fake investment platform, and within about a month she put in 800,000 yuan, almost all of it borrowed, and could not withdraw it. A Pudong police anti-fraud officer said that AI synthesis could still be detected and that in her screenshot the man's thumb was clearly longer than a normal person's. The report gives no direct statement that face-swap software was used. The case was under further investigation.

Bengaluru: police say a man paid Rs 1.85 lakh after a dating-app contact threatened to circulate an AI-manipulated obscene video of him

Deccan Herald reports, citing Bengaluru police, that a 23-year-old man lost Rs 1.85 lakh in an alleged sextortion scam. He matched with a woman on a dating app on 27 September 2026 and exchanged numbers; he told police that he then received a WhatsApp video call from her number lasting five to six seconds. Police said he then received an obscene video manipulated using AI and the sender threatened to circulate it unless he paid. Fearing exposure, he borrowed money from a friend and transferred Rs 1.85 lakh to several UPI IDs between 27 and 29 September as the threats continued, a police officer said. Police registered a first information report on his online cybercrime complaint and are trying to trace the suspects. The report does not say how police established that the video was AI-manipulated, and the tool is not named.

Beijing News: a student says a friend's older relative bought several high-priced orders from an AI-generated 'Xiaohai' persona's shop window

The Beijing News reported on 18 October 2026, in a follow-up to its investigation of 'Xiaohai' accounts on Chinese short-video platforms, that the accounts show AI-generated teenage boys who address older women as 'aunties and mothers' and steer them to high-priced shop windows. A university student told the paper that an older relative of a friend had been watching 'Xiaohai' videos and asked the friend why the boy was so badly off; the friend then found that the relative had already bought several orders of goods at high prices through the persona's shop window. The student made a counter-video with the same AI tools, posted on 28 September, in which the persona admits to deceiving viewers; after the friend showed it to the relative, the relative said they would not buy the persona's goods again. The amount spent and the goods bought are not reported. China National Radio's report the same day also describes the 'Xiaohai' videos as AI-generated and notes that many carry an 'AI-generated' watermark.
