Russian family turned away at Istanbul check-in for North Macedonia after ChatGPT told the father no visa was needed, he says in a video

In a video posted on Instagram and reported by Russian and Kazakh outlets on 14 June 2026, a Russian father said he had asked ChatGPT whether Russian citizens need a visa for North Macedonia and that it answered that they did not; he showed a screenshot of the answer. According to the reports, the family bought tickets and booked hotels and a car, and at check-in at an Istanbul airport staff asked for visas and showed them a government decision that Russians need one. The Telegram channel SHOT, as relayed by NEWS.ru and Life, reported that he was travelling with his wife and three daughters, that he lost about 50,000 roubles on the tickets, and that the family flew to Bosnia and Herzegovina instead. Business FM put the question to ChatGPT itself and was told that a visa is needed; it wrote that it could not rule out that the tourist, a blogger, had invented the story for views. Profile.ru recounted the case in October 2026 and wrote that North Macedonia ended visa-free entry for Russians in 2022. The account rests on the father's video and has not been independently confirmed.

AI system as recorded: ChatGPT, which the father says answered his question about visa requirements for North Macedonia by saying Russian citizens need no visa

Reported harm

According to the father's video and SHOT's account as relayed, the family was refused at check-in for its flight to North Macedonia because it had no visas, he lost about 50,000 roubles on tickets, and the family changed its trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

How Harm Occurred

By the father's account, ChatGPT gave a wrong answer to a visa question; the family relied on it, bought tickets and bookings, and was refused at check-in.

Outcome

Unknown

No response from OpenAI and no refund are reported. Business FM's own test of ChatGPT returned the correct answer that a visa is required, and Business FM raised the possibility that the story was invented for views.

What remains unknown

  • The exact date of the refusal (the reports appeared on 14 June 2026 and the father said he bought the tickets the day before).
  • The full ChatGPT conversation and the model or version used.
  • Whether any of the ticket money was refunded.
  • Whether the account is accurate: Business FM raised the possibility that it was invented for views, and no independent confirmation was found.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The father says ChatGPT answered his question whether Russians need a visa for North Macedonia by saying they did not, and showed a screenshot of that answer in his video; the family bought tickets and bookings on that answer and was refused at check-in because a visa is required. The conversation is known only from his video; Business FM's own later test of ChatGPT gave the correct answer.

Ahmedabad: police say two men used ChatGPT to make fake Navratri garba passes and sold 686 through Instagram ads for about Rs 8 lakh

The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch said in October 2026 that it had arrested two men from Rajasthan who sold 686 counterfeit passes for Navratri garba events in Ahmedabad through discounted Instagram advertisements, collecting about Rs 8 lakh. According to the police account relayed by PTI, IANS, Ahmedabad Mirror and Gujarat Samachar, the accused prepared the passes and promotional material with ChatGPT, adding barcodes and QR codes so that they looked genuine, and sent them to buyers from email addresses resembling the organisers'. IANS reports that the case came to light when customers found their passes invalid at the venues. PTI and Ahmedabad Mirror say it came to light through a complaint filed on 16 October by a garba organiser whose event name and logo were used. How many buyers lost money is not reported; 686 is the number of passes.

Heritage project reports loss of inscription records after a Claude Code command

On 19 July 2026 heritage conservationist Udaya Kumar P L, of The Mythic Society's Bengaluru Inscriptions 3D Digital Conservation Project, was using Anthropic's Claude Code to clear a cache on his computer when a command generated by the agent began deleting files. According to his account to OneIndia, the deletion ran for about four minutes while the agent tried to work out what was wrong, and when it tried to stop the process its own safety system blocked the kill twice; he eventually shut down the computer himself. Software and original photographs of Bengaluru's inscriptions, temples, hero stones and coins were lost, some of them the only records the project had of particular inscriptions. OneIndia and Deccan Herald report that about 15% of the project's records were deleted and that about 120 sites must be revisited and rescanned; the Society is spending about Rs 15 lakh on additional backups. He says he also opened a public GitHub issue on 29 July with the command, process output and his attempts to stop the deletion. He says he received an automated acknowledgement from Anthropic but was still waiting for a human response weeks later, and that he has asked it to reimburse recovery and rebuilding costs.

TOPR says two Lithuanian hikers followed an AI assistant's shortcut suggestion into climbing terrain in the Polish Tatras and were evacuated by helicopter

The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue service (TOPR), summarising a busy first week of July 2026, told the Polish Press Agency that two tourists from Lithuania became stuck below Niebieska Turnia in the Polish Tatras. According to the TOPR duty rescuer, as relayed by RMF24 and Onet, the pair wanted to shorten their way to the Valley of Five Polish Lakes and used suggestions from an artificial-intelligence assistant, which pointed them across Świnicka Ławka; they ended up in difficult climbing terrain and were evacuated by helicopter. TVN24's reporter said the event happened at the start of July, that the hikers were using 'one of the popular AI models', that good weather let rescuers locate them quickly and that they were flown to Zakopane. TOPR's own report of 10 July lists the call among its afternoon entries for 4 July, as LRT also reported on 13 July, and says the pair had used ChatGPT's advice ('porad czatu GPT'); the PAP relays name no product, and the hikers' exchanges with the assistant have not been published. No injury is reported.

Nikkei reports two climbers rescued on Yarigatake in Japan's Northern Alps had relied on a ChatGPT answer that light equipment would do

A Singaporean man and a Thai woman became unable to move in rain on a steep slope near Tenguhara, at about 2,400 metres on Yarigatake in the Northern Alps, and asked police for rescue shortly before 5:30 pm on 27 May 2026, according to SBC Shinetsu Broadcasting's report of the police account. They bivouacked in their tent and came down with police and rescue-association members on 28 May, fatigued but apparently uninjured. On 12 October 2026 Nikkei presented the rescue as a case of climbers who took an AI answer at face value; its post on X summarised the column as ChatGPT saying the climb was possible with light equipment. A Vietnamese report (An ninh Thu do, carried by Vietnam.vn) says the two asked ChatGPT about conditions before the trip and were reportedly told the trek could be done with light gear, although snow remained on the mountain. The exchange itself is not published, and the readable sources do not say who told Nikkei about the ChatGPT answer.
