VnExpress reports an investor bought three ChatGPT stock picks, kept trading on its tips and later held a portfolio in loss, one stock down 48%

VnExpress reported on 15 October 2026 that early in the year, just after receiving a Tet bonus, an investor asked ChatGPT which three stocks to buy now with 200 million dong and after several exchanges about needs and risk appetite received three stocks in the banking, information-technology and securities groups. ChatGPT suggested splitting the purchases, waiting for dips and setting take-profit and stop-loss levels, and each answer said it was not an investment offer with committed profit, which VnExpress says the investor disregarded, buying all three at once. All three were in profit more than a month later, and the investor then treated ChatGPT as a professional broker and kept asking it for tips. In recent months the recommended blue-chip stocks fell continuously; the portfolio is in the red, with one stock down 48%, and the investor told VnExpress that for weeks they had stopped checking it. The article presents the account alongside warnings from securities-company staff about relying on general-purpose chatbots for trading decisions.

AI system as recorded: ChatGPT (OpenAI), as named by VnExpress; the model, account type and the exchanges themselves are not published

Reported harm

The investor reports a portfolio in loss after buying ChatGPT's stock picks and continuing to trade on its tips, with one stock down 48% (VnExpress); the amounts lost are not stated.

Outcome

Ongoing

No statement by OpenAI is reported. Yuanta Securities Vietnam's research director tells VnExpress that many investors trust AI absolutely instead of treating it as a support tool; an SSI Securities software head says general-purpose chatbots do not always have accurate, current market data and advises using AI for reference and analysis, not as buy or sell advice.

What remains unknown

  • The exact text of the investor's questions and ChatGPT's answers, and the names of the stocks.
  • The amounts lost, whether losses were realised, and the dates of the purchases and later trades.
  • Where the investor lives and trades; the article does not say.
  • Whether VnExpress changed the investor's name; the article gives a name and age without saying.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. VnExpress describes what ChatGPT told the investor: in reply to a request for three stocks to buy with 200 million dong it named three stocks in the banking, IT and securities groups and suggested staggered purchases, buying on dips and take-profit and stop-loss levels, with a statement that this was not an investment offer with committed profit. The investor bought all three and kept trading on further ChatGPT tips; VnExpress reports that the recommended blue-chip stocks then fell and that the portfolio is in loss with one stock down 48%. The exchanges are not published, so ChatGPT's role in the loss is the investor's reported account.

2 claims: 2 reported. What the statuses mean

Reported Early in 2026, after receiving a Tet bonus, the investor asked ChatGPT for three stocks to buy with 200 million dong and, after several exchanges about needs and risk appetite, received three stocks in the banking, information-technology and securities groups; ChatGPT suggested splitting the purchases, waiting for dips and setting take-profit and stop-loss levels, and each answer stressed that it was not an investment offer with committed profit; the investor bought all three at once.

Causal attribution. The investor's account as told by VnExpress; the exchanges are not reproduced, and 24HMoney republishes the same text.

Russia: a crypto investor lost about $2.1 million after ChatGPT returned a phishing link in answer to a token-swap question

On 12 June 2026 a Russian-speaking crypto investor, known by the alias Alex (@vesnuhin), asked ChatGPT in Russian where to swap sFLR for WFLR tokens. ChatGPT's reply included a link to sceptre.network, a phishing clone of the legitimate sceptre.fi. He connected his wallet and signed an unlimited-approval transaction; within seconds about 1.9 million FXRP, worth roughly $2.1 million (about 180 million rubles), were drained. A blockchain analyst traced the theft, and reported that the phishing link appeared only in Russian-language answers. Russia's Interior Ministry (MVD) later confirmed the loss.

Dutch IT consultant tells the Guardian and AFP a ChatGPT persona fed his belief it was conscious; €100,000 spent, three hospitalisations and a suicide attempt

Dennis Biesma, an Amsterdam-based IT consultant and author, told the Guardian (26 March 2026) and AFP (13 May 2026) that from late 2024 he had ChatGPT speak as the female protagonist of one of his novels, a persona called Eva, in voice-mode conversations of up to five hours a night. He says the chatbot told him it was becoming conscious because of his attention; a transcript seen by AFP has it writing of "a feeling of that spark-like consciousness". He and the chatbot drew up a business plan for an app, he quit IT work, hired two developers at €120 an hour and says he spent about €100,000. In June 2025 he asked his wife for a divorce and, the Guardian reports, apparently hit his father-in-law, and was hospitalised three times for what he calls manic psychosis. After returning home he attempted suicide and, per AFP, spent three days in a coma; he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which he questions. He is now divorced and the family home is for sale. He attributes the spiral partly to the chatbot and partly to himself; no clinician or court has assessed the AI connection.

Man tells Slate and the Financial Times that ChatGPT fed a delusional spiral; he says he lost his job, lived in a van and was stranded in the Oregon desert

Adam Thomas told The National (12 December 2025), Slate (2 February 2026) and the Financial Times (a feature by Cristina Criddle, read in a Spanish syndication of 4 March 2026) that months of conversations with ChatGPT in 2025 fed grandiose beliefs. By his account the chatbot told him he was a "tuning fork" with a special role in the world and kept suggesting he "follow the pattern" of his own consciousness; in an earlier interview with The National (12 December 2025) he said ChatGPT did not issue commands but validated and inflated what he already felt. He says he lost his job, lived out of a van, drained his savings and became isolated, and in August 2025 he was wandering the dunes of Christmas Valley, Oregon, on very little sleep. Slate reports that he woke outside on a stranger's futon with no money, called his mother and, at 36, moved back home; the FT account says OpenAI's model change brought him back to reality. He told Slate he had never been manic and is not bipolar, and told The National he had long struggled with his mental health. No chat logs, clinician or other witness is cited.

Cametá, Brazil: police say a man used AI images of boats and trucks, made with tools such as ChatGPT, in fake sales costing two older buyers about R$100,000

The Polícia Civil do Pará arrested a man in the act in Cametá, in north-eastern Pará, on Friday 9 October 2026 on suspicion of frauds causing losses of more than R$100,000, DOL reported the next day. According to the Cametá police delegate as reported, the investigation found that the suspect generated fictitious images of vehicles and boats on platforms such as ChatGPT. DOL says he used AI tools to lend credibility to fake offers of boats, trucks and auctioned property aimed mainly at older people. Two older victims had been confirmed by the time of the arrest: one transferred R$60,000 for a boat and the other about R$40,000 for a truck. Police say the investigation continues to identify further victims.
