Modern Express reported on 24 September 2026 that online posts accused a female graduate student at Qingdao University of using AI, over a relationship dispute, to generate nude images of her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend and circulate them, and said the student had been criminally detained. A staff member at the Shibei branch of the Qingdao Public Security Bureau told the paper that the victim had reported the matter, that the case met the conditions for filing and that an investigation had been opened, declining to give details. A staff member of the university's Art College said the college had received a report and that the student had graduated in June. The victim told the reporter she was cooperating with the police and awaiting the result. The AI generation, the circulation and the detention are stated only in the online posts; police confirmed only that a case was opened. All accounts derive from the single Modern Express report, read through relays.

What Happened

The allegation. According to Modern Express (24 September 2026), several internet users had posted that a female graduate student at Qingdao University, apparently because of relationship problems, used AI to generate nude images of her boyfriend's former girlfriend and spread them, and was afterwards criminally detained by police. The posts themselves were not located.

Institutional responses. On 24 September a reporter called the Discipline Construction and Graduate Training Office of the university's Art College; a staff member said the college had indeed received a related report and that the student involved had graduated in June, adding that for specifics the reporter would have to ask law enforcement. A staff member of the Shibei branch of the Qingdao Public Security Bureau said the victim had reported the matter, the case met the conditions for filing and an investigation had been opened, and that the specifics could not be disclosed.

The victim. The victim told the reporter she was cooperating with the police investigation and waiting for the result.

Limits. Only the existence of a police case and of a report to the college is confirmed by named institutions, through staff speaking by phone; the AI generation, the nature of the images, how widely they spread and the detention come from online posts. On 2 September 2026 Vero Beach police arrested Peter Solomon Ruma, 37, after an investigation into the creation and distribution of altered sexual images of women without their consent. Police say he used artificial intelligence to make sexually explicit altered images of victims from photographs taken from social media and other online sources and then distributed or promoted them. The eight charges (three counts of creating and three of promoting an altered sexual depiction of an identifiable person under Florida Statute 836.13, one count of sexual cyberharassment and one of stalking) relate to one adult woman and to incidents between June and August 2026. Detectives said they had identified several other women believed to have been victimised in the same way, some of whom may not know that images of them exist, and that the conduct may go back several years. According to court documents reported by TCPalm, the woman who came forward knew Ruma and had received sexual text messages since 2018; her face had been cropped from public photographs, including a business profile, and placed on nude bodies. Ruma was held on a US$1 million bond with conditions including no internet access; the investigation continues and further charges are expected.

Indore: an engineer was arrested at the end of January 2026 for a seven-month campaign of posting morphed obscene images of a woman and her sister, with threatening letters, to their relatives and neighbours and pasting posters near their home after the family rejected his marriage proposal; one Hindi report attributes the morphing to AI, citing a police forensic finding (Times of India, Free Press Journal, Patrika, NewsTak, 30-31 January 2026)

Indore police said at the end of January 2026 that the crime branch had arrested an engineer working as a data analyst after a woman complained at Banganga police station in July 2025 that an unknown person was mailing letters with abusive content and morphed nude photographs of her and her sister to her, her relatives and neighbours, and pasting posters near their house, causing mental harassment and social embarrassment. Police said the accused had approached the complainant's sister through a matrimonial website, that the proposal fell through over a horoscope mismatch, and that he then sought revenge by sending the material about seven times between July 2025 and January 2026 from post offices in Ujjain, Dewas, Khategaon, Ashta and Dhar, wearing a mask and cap and changing buses to avoid being traced; NewsTak adds that he also threatened the family with an acid attack and that a laptop and printer were seized. The case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the IT Act and the SC/ST Act and he was remanded. Patrika reports that the obscene images were created with AI and that police said digital forensics found AI-generated images; the English reports describe them as morphed without naming the technology, so the AI attribution rests on one outlet.

Braintree, Essex: a bar worker was jailed for five years for making AI deepfake pornography of 20 women he knew, including a 16-year-old's prom photo, and posting it with their names and phone numbers on a forum glorifying rape

Between March 2023 and May 2024 Brandon Tyler, 26, a bar worker from Braintree, Essex, took images from the social-media pages of 20 women he knew, used AI to remove clothing or otherwise make them sexually explicit, and posted 173 times on an online forum that, in the prosecutor's words, championed 'rape culture and sexual violence to women', adding the women's names, social-media handles and phone numbers and, under one picture, asking 'which one deserves to be gang raped?'. One edit was made from a 16-year-old girl's prom-night photograph. He was caught after including his own Instagram handle in a screenshot. On 4 April 2025 at Chelmsford Crown Court, having admitted 18 counts of causing harassment without violence and 15 counts of sharing an intimate photo or film for sexual gratification, he was sentenced to five years' imprisonment; Judge Alexander Mills called his conduct 'the worst kind of toxic masculinity'. Two victims told the court of the impact: one said she still received anonymous sexual calls and that her long-term relationship had ended; another said she felt 'completely violated'.

Delhi police report AI-edited sexual images used to harass a former partner

Delhi police said they arrested a man in July 2025 after a former partner complained that her photographs were being misused online. According to the police account reported by The Indian Express, he used AI tools to create sexual images and circulated them through fake Instagram accounts, also impersonating her identity. Police described a sustained harassment campaign and said they recovered a smartphone for examination. The start of the campaign and the later case outcome are unknown.
