New York basketball coach pleads guilty after deputies say he made AI-generated explicit images of females he knew, including a 14-year-old girl

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office in New York arrested a basketball coach and trainer, charging him on 16 April 2026, after a person reported that he had AI-generated pornographic images of females he knew. According to the sheriff's office, the people depicted were aged 14 to 30, and detectives found on his device an AI-generated pornographic image of a 14-year-old girl made from a photo taken when she was 12; the person who reported it had seen that image. Detectives said only the image of the minor could be charged as a crime. The district attorney's office added 12 counts in May 2026. On 9 October 2026, according to syracuse.com, he pleaded guilty to all 12 counts of the indictment, including promoting and possessing a sexual performance by a child, on a judge's plea offer of six months in a correctional facility followed by 10 years' probation and sex-offender registration. Sentencing is set for 8 January, a date syracuse.com gives without a year. The AI tool is not identified, and no source reports whether the images were shared beyond the person who saw the minor's image.

AI system as recorded: AI image generation used to make pornographic images of real girls and women known to the maker, including one made from a photo of a girl taken when she was 12 (tool not identified)

What Happened

Report and arrest. According to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, its investigation began when a person reported that a local basketball coach, consultant and trainer had AI-generated pornographic images of females he knew. The sheriff's office said those depicted were aged 14 to 30. Detectives found the images on his device, including a pornographic image of a 14-year-old girl that had been made from a photo taken when she was 12. According to syracuse.com, deputies said that this image had been seen by another person, who reported it, and detectives said that only the image involving the minor could be charged as a crime. The sheriff's office charged him on 16 April 2026 with promoting and possessing a sexual performance by a child (felonies) and misdemeanour obscenity and endangering the welfare of a child; he was released on bond two days later.

Further charges and plea. In May 2026 the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office announced three counts each of promoting a sexual performance by a child, possessing a sexual performance by a child, obscenity and endangering the welfare of a child. On 9 October 2026, syracuse.com reported, he pleaded guilty to 12 counts on a plea offer from the judge: six months in a correctional facility, 10 years' probation and registration as a sex offender. Under New York law a defendant accepting a judge's plea offer must plead guilty to the whole indictment. The prosecutor said the district attorney's offer had required state prison time. Sentencing is set for 8 January, a date syracuse.com gives without a year.

What is not known. The bodies do not identify the AI tool, say when the images were made, give the number of people depicted or report whether any image was shared beyond the person who reported the minor's image. The people depicted have not spoken publicly.

Reported harm

According to the sheriff's office, girls and women known to a basketball coach, aged 14 to 30, were depicted without consent in AI-generated pornographic images, one made from a photo of a girl taken when she was 12; he pleaded guilty to child sexual performance offences over the image of the minor.

On 9 October 2026 he pleaded guilty to the entire indictment on a judge's plea offer of six months at the Jamesville Correctional Facility, 10 years' probation and sex-offender registration; the prosecutor said the district attorney's offer would have required state prison. Sentencing is scheduled for 8 January, a date syracuse.com gives without a year.

What remains unknown

  • The final sentence, due at a hearing on 8 January (the report gives no year).

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: supported. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office said a person reported that the coach had 'AI-generated pornographic images of females he knew' and that detectives found on his device an AI-generated pornographic image of a 14-year-old girl made from a photo taken when she was 12; CNY Central, reporting the district attorney's office's new charges, described the investigation as one into 'his use of AI to generate pornographic images of children'; and syracuse.com reports that deputies said he admitted making AI-generated explicit images, including one of a minor, and that he pleaded guilty. The generated images depicted real girls and women in sexual content (depicted_or_impersonated), which is the harm charged. The tool is not identified.

Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends

On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. The tool is not named. The juveniles are not named in any report.

Kentucky: Elijah Heacock, 16, died by suicide after a sextortion demand backed by AI-generated nude images of him

Elijah Heacock, a 16-year-old Caverna High School student in Barren County, Kentucky, died by suicide on 28 February 2025. Investigators searching his phone found AI-generated images of him, some sexually explicit, that an anonymous extortionist had sent with a demand for $3,000 and a threat to share them with his family and friends; his parents say he sent a small partial payment and was told it was 'not enough'. The Barren County Sheriff's Office escalated the case to the FBI, which was still investigating in the inspected reports; no arrest has been reported. His parents have campaigned publicly, Kentucky made sextortion a felony in March 2025, and the family supported the federal Take It Down Act.

Wichita, Kansas resident reports a text with AI-generated nude images and a threat to send them to Facebook friends and family unless money was paid

KWCH (Wichita, Kansas) reported on 10 March 2026 that a Wichita resident received a message from an unknown number containing nude images that the station and the resident described as AI-generated fakes, together with screenshots of the resident's Facebook profile, friend list and family, and a threat to send the images to those people unless money was paid. The resident said the images could ruin relationships and career if they reached family or an employer, filed a police report and said no more messages arrived after blocking the numbers. KWCH reported that the Wichita Police Department said it had not seen a situation like this before. The account rests on one KWCH article built on the resident's own statements. The images were not independently examined, the sum demanded and whether any payment was made are not stated, and the date the message arrived is not stated.

Perth woman tells PerthNow men at a Scarborough pub covertly photographed her and a friend and used an AI program to make sexualised images shown to the pair

A Perth woman told PerthNow (report carried by The West Australian and The Nightly, 7 October 2026) that on a Friday night at a Scarborough venue a group of eight to ten men sitting nearby began bantering with her and a friend, and that one of them photographed her without her knowledge, put the photo into an AI program and altered it into sexualised content showing her kissing several of the men. According to her account the men passed the image around and showed it to the two women while laughing, and had also made sexual content from a photo of her friend. The women reported the men to the venue, which banned them, and to Western Australia Police; in messages seen by PerthNow a detective wrote that there was at that point no law covering AI-created photos or media, while a WA Police spokesperson said state legislation criminalises non-consensual distribution of intimate images including AI-altered ones and that a statutory review is considering possession. The man who allegedly made the image later messaged her that he had made it as a joke and apologised. The images are not reported to have been distributed online; the tool is not identified; the account is the woman's own, with the man's private messages and the police correspondence as described by the newspaper.
