Malaysia: footage of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad mourning his wife was edited, in what sources believe was AI manipulation, to add dancing, and posted on TikTok in September 2026; the communications regulator MCMC said it was examining content believed to use AI to manipulate footage of him in mourning

Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, wife of former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, died on 28 September 2026 aged 100. BuzzKini reported on 30 September that a TikTok account had posted a video of Mahathir grieving beside her body, edited to show a woman dancing next to him, and another clip of the moment he raised his hands in prayer edited with dancing movements while seated in a wheelchair. BuzzKini says the edits are believed to have been made with AI, and that many social media users condemned them and asked the regulator and police to act. On 2 October the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it was examining social media content believed to use AI to manipulate footage of Mahathir in mourning, had contacted the platforms concerned, and that action could follow under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 if a breach was found.

AI system as recorded: Edited videos of Mahathir Mohamad mourning his wife, posted by a TikTok account; BuzzKini says they are believed to have been edited with AI and MCMC describes content believed to use AI. The tool and the account holder are not identified

What Happened

The videos. Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali died on 28 September 2026 aged 100, and the government gave her a state funeral (Utusan Melayu). BuzzKini reported on 30 September that a Threads user had shared videos from a TikTok account. One showed Mahathir grieving beside his wife's body with a woman dancing on the right in revealing clothing. BuzzKini says the image was believed to have been taken from another newspaper and then edited. In a second clip, the moment Mahathir raised his hands in prayer was edited with dancing movements while seated in a wheelchair. BuzzKini says that, judging from the result, the videos are believed to have been edited with artificial intelligence.

Reaction. BuzzKini says many social media users criticised and condemned the edits and asked MCMC, the police and others to act against the TikTok account holder. Some suggested the account was fake. BuzzKini said that when it checked, the account could no longer be found on TikTok.

Regulator. On 2 October, Utusan Melayu reported an MCMC statement saying the commission was examining social media content believed to use AI to manipulate footage of Mahathir as he went through his grief. MCMC said that altering real footage in ways that can mislead the public, change the context of an event or harm the dignity of an individual and family is a serious matter, all the more when it involves a person facing loss. It said it had contacted the platforms and that action could follow under Act 588 if a breach was found.

Limits. The videos were not inspected for this review. Neither source names the tool or explains how the AI attribution was made; both hedge it ('dipercayai', believed). No statement from Mahathir or his family about the videos is reported. The MCMC statement as reported does not describe the content, name TikTok or mention dancing; that it concerns the videos BuzzKini described is inferred from its subject and timing.

Reported harm

Footage of the former prime minister mourning beside his wife's body was edited, believed to be with AI, to add dancing and was posted on TikTok, prompting public condemnation and an MCMC review of content it said could harm the dignity of an individual and family (BuzzKini; MCMC via Utusan Melayu).

Outcome

Ongoing

MCMC said in a statement reported on 2 October 2026 that it had contacted the social media platforms concerned and was examining the content, and that appropriate action could be taken under the law in force, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), if a breach is found (Utusan Melayu). No arrest or charge is reported. BuzzKini said on 30 September that, when it checked, the TikTok account could no longer be found on the platform; it does not say whether TikTok or the account holder removed it.

What remains unknown

  • Which tool was used and how the AI attribution was established.
  • Who operated the TikTok account, how widely the videos were seen, and whether the account's disappearance from TikTok (BuzzKini, 30 September) was a removal by the platform or by its holder.
  • Whether MCMC found a breach or took action.
  • Whether Mahathir or his family commented on the videos.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: suspected. BuzzKini says that, judging from the result, the videos are believed ('dipercayai') to have been edited with artificial intelligence. MCMC's statement, as reported by Utusan Melayu, refers to content believed ('dipercayai') to use AI to manipulate the footage. Neither names a tool or explains how the attribution was made, and the videos were not inspected. The edited videos depict Mahathir (depicted_or_impersonated).

Event countries: Unknown. Affected-person countries: Malaysia. Court countries: Unknown.

Utusan Melayu's photo caption places Mahathir at his wife's burial at the Pusara Negara in Putrajaya, and BuzzKini says she died at the Institut Jantung Negara in Kuala Lumpur, so he was in Malaysia during the mourning the footage shows. Neither source says where the edited videos were made or posted from; the Malaysian regulator's review does not establish an event location. No court is involved.

Reviewed for publication 2026-10-03: Published under the 2026-09-15 charter as a core case: edited videos depicted a former prime minister mourning his wife, reportedly made with AI, and the national communications regulator said it was examining them. He is a public figure and is named as the sources do. Two independent accounts (BuzzKini's report of the videos; the MCMC statement, which does not describe the content, so its link to the TikTok videos is inferred); both hedge the AI attribution.

Rajasthan: a social-media influencer's video of a Ganga dip at Haridwar was manipulated with AI into an objectionable reel that went viral; she says she is mentally disturbed and cannot leave her house, and filed a cyber-crime complaint on 16 September 2026

A Rajasthan social-media influencer visited Haridwar with her family in June 2026 and on 6 June uploaded to Instagram a short video, recorded by relatives, of herself taking a dip in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri wearing a salwar suit. About two months later she found that the video had been manipulated with AI into an objectionable version showing the same movements with her face and body portrayed 'in a shameful manner'; the fake reel went viral in the week before 20 September and drew objectionable comments and re-sharing. In a public appeal she asked whoever uploaded it to remove it, saying it was a matter of her dignity, that she was mentally very disturbed and had reached a point where she could not step out of her house. She filed a complaint with the cyber-crime police on 16 September 2026; the investigating Rajasthan Police Service officer said they were trying to identify who created and circulated the video and to have it removed, and that identifying the accused would take time. Dainik Bhaskar's English edition reported the case on 20 September in a 'Sunday Big Story' that does not name her.

India: AI deepfake videos of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay offering 'financial assistance' were used to defraud people in Madhya Pradesh and other states; a Rajasthan man was arrested

In 2026 AI-generated videos showing a simulated Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay speaking in a fabricated Hindi voice circulated on Facebook and other platforms, urging viewers to contact a WhatsApp number to receive money for education, medical treatment and other needs. The Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-CID detected the videos during routine monitoring, registered a case on 1 September 2026 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, and traced the scheme to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. On 12 September a 28-year-old man from Alwar district was arrested with Rajasthan Police, brought to Tamil Nadu on a transit warrant and remanded in judicial custody; a phone, SIM cards and a CPU were seized. Investigators traced a man in Madhya Pradesh who had lost money, and said people in several states were cheated. The CB-CID is also examining similar videos posted from Facebook accounts suspected to be run from Pakistan.

São Paulo: a 37-year-old influencer used AI 'deepfake' tools to insert photographs of young women and adolescent girls of the Congregação Cristã do Brasil, taken from their social-media profiles without consent, into sexualised videos set inside churches; a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old filed police reports and the Civil Police investigate under the child-protection statute

A humorist and tyre repairer from Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo state, who posts on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok as an impersonator of a television presenter, used AI tools to turn photographs that young women and adolescent girls of the Congregação Cristã do Brasil (CCB) had posted from inside churches into videos in which they appear dancing sensually beside women in short skirts, with the presenter inserted and the influencer commenting on their clothes. A 16-year-old congregant and her parents went to the 8ª Delegacia de Defesa da Mulher in São Paulo in February 2026; g1 made the case public on 22 April 2026 and Folha de S.Paulo confirmed the investigation. The girl told g1 the photograph had been taken in 2025 in front of the altar of a CCB church, that she was very shy, had not wanted to be exposed and was afraid the exposure would affect her social life, and that she had stopped taking photographs of herself; her family sued for moral damages. On 30 April 2026 the mother of a second girl, aged 17, registered a police report at the 4ª DDM Norte; g1 reported that the exposure had affected the girl psychologically. The São Paulo Civil Police investigate under article 241-C of the Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (simulating a sex or pornography scene with a minor by digital means) and for defamation of adult women in the videos; the inquiry was sent at the prosecutor's request to Lençóis Paulista, where the suspect lives, and the total number of people depicted was still being established. The influencer admitted making the videos with AI, said through his lawyer that they were satire and criticism of customs in a context of humour, said he did not know some of those depicted were minors, denied in his police statement linking the adolescent's image to sexualised content and said he had taken her for an adult, and posted an apology video (dated 5 April by g1's first report, which says it does not mention the deepfakes; described as posted after his police statement in g1's second report). The CCB said it had identified him, was taking internal measures and supports legal measures by the authorities. No later development was found on 2026-09-22.

Hyderabad, India: actor Chiranjeevi files a cybercrime complaint over AI-generated obscene videos using his face on pornographic websites; police register a case under the IT Act and BNS

On 25 October 2025 the Telugu actor and former Union minister Konidela Chiranjeevi gave Hyderabad cybercrime police a written complaint that several pornographic websites were publishing obscene videos made with AI that morphed his face and likeness, and asked for a criminal and technical investigation and removal of the content, including from mirror sites. Police registered a case under Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. In the complaint he said the videos caused severe and irreparable harm to his reputation and personal and emotional distress to him and his family. He had already obtained an ad-interim injunction from the Hyderabad City Civil Court protecting his name, image and likeness (Gulf News); V6 Velugu reports that he had gone to that court in September 2025 over the same kind of deepfake videos and that on 26 September it ordered their removal. A September 2026 NewsX recap reports that Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar said the cybercrime team was working to trace those responsible.
