Lake County sheriff says an Illinois man used an online AI service to make sexual videos of a child relative and her mother from photos; charges filed
The Lake County Sheriff's Office in Illinois says that on 25 March 2026 a man from unincorporated Antioch told deputies a stranger had handed him a phone containing sexual videos of a young child he identified as a relative, and that he later admitted the story was fabricated. According to the sheriff's office, investigators found that he had taken photographs of the child and the child's mother and used an online service to generate sexually explicit videos from those images, including videos depicting the child, and a forensic analysis of his phone found further AI-generated videos exploiting the child and her mother. He was charged on 1 April 2026 with five counts of producing child pornography and is detained awaiting trial; the child was taken into protective custody. The service is not named, and the charges are allegations.

AI system as recorded: Unidentified online service that the Lake County Sheriff's Office says was used to generate sexually explicit AI videos from photographs of a child and her mother
What Happened
The report to deputies. The Lake County Sheriff's Office says deputies met a man in unincorporated Antioch, Illinois, on 25 March 2026 after he reported that a woman had handed him a phone and its passcode and told him it held child pornography. He said he found videos of a young child engaged in sexual acts and identified the child as a relative. After inconsistencies in his account, detectives questioned him, and the sheriff's office says he changed his story several times and admitted it was fabricated.
The AI videos. According to the sheriff's office, as relayed by the Lake and McHenry County Scanner, FOX 32 Chicago and Patch, investigators learned that the man had taken photographs of the child and the child's mother and used an online service to generate sexually explicit videos from those images, including videos of the child. A forensic analysis of his phone found numerous videos of child pornography, including further AI-generated videos exploiting the child and her mother.
Charges and custody. He was first charged with filing a false police report. On 1 April 2026 he was charged with five counts of producing child pornography and he is detained awaiting trial. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services took the child into protective custody, and the child was interviewed at the Lake County Children's Advocacy Center.
Limits. The account of the investigation comes from the sheriff's office. At his detention hearing, the Lake and McHenry County Scanner reported, a judge granted a petition to detain him pending trial, and his public defender said he had never been charged with anything before and that the videos were made to frame the child's mother and were not intended to be disseminated to others. The service is not named, the dates on which the videos were made are not stated, and the charges are allegations.
Reported harm
A young child and her mother were depicted in AI-generated sexually explicit videos made from photographs of them, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office; the child was placed in protective custody (sheriff's office account via three local outlets).
How Harm Occurred
According to the sheriff's office, a relative took photographs of a child and her mother and used an online AI service to generate sexually explicit videos depicting them from those photographs.
Outcome
OngoingThe man was first charged with filing a false police report. On 1 April 2026 he was charged with five counts of producing child pornography, which Patch describes as Class X felonies, and he is held in the Lake County Jail awaiting trial. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services took the child into protective custody, and detectives said more charges were possible. The charges are allegations; no plea, trial or conviction is reported.
What remains unknown
- Which online service generated the videos.
- When the photographs were taken and when the videos were made.
- Whether the videos were shared with anyone, and whether other people appear in the other material found on the phone.
- The outcome of the criminal case.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The Lake County Sheriff's Office, relayed by the Lake and McHenry County Scanner (quoting Chief Christopher Covelli), FOX 32 Chicago and Patch, says investigators learned the man used an online service to generate sexually explicit videos from photographs he had taken of the child and the child's mother, including videos depicting the child, and that a forensic analysis of his phone found further AI-generated videos exploiting the child and her mother. The generated videos are the harm: they depict the two people sexually without their consent. The service is unnamed and the account is the sheriff's office's alone, so the status is reported.

Hampton, New Hampshire: police say a Massachusetts man harassed a Hampton resident for more than a year and posted an AI-generated deepfake video showing the resident being arrested and jailed, events police say never happened; he was indicted on four felony counts of fraudulent use of deepfakes and is held after his bail was revoked
Hampton police say a man from Worcester, Massachusetts harassed a Hampton resident for more than a year through phone calls, texts, emails and online posts, stemming from a perceived past disagreement, and kept going after the victim asked him to stop and after he was served with a stalking order of protection in October 2025. In November 2025 the victim showed police an AI-generated deepfake video that, according to the arrest-warrant affidavit, the man created to humiliate and defame him; it shows the victim being arrested and jailed and includes a structure resembling the victim's Hampton home and images of real people. A police sergeant said the depicted events never happened and that the video was posted on YouTube. A Rockingham County grand jury indicted the man on four Class B felony counts of fraudulent use of deepfakes under RSA 638:26-a, for creating, distributing and presenting a video of an identifiable person on 20 October, 31 October, 7 November and 13 November 2025. He turned himself in on 24 March, was released on bail, was arrested again on 26 August for alleged bail violations and is held at the Rockingham County House of Corrections. Police had the video removed. The AI tool is not named and the victim's own account is relayed only through the police.

Rajasthan: a social-media influencer's video of a Ganga dip at Haridwar was manipulated with AI into an objectionable reel that went viral; she says she is mentally disturbed and cannot leave her house, and filed a cyber-crime complaint on 16 September 2026
A Rajasthan social-media influencer visited Haridwar with her family in June 2026 and on 6 June uploaded to Instagram a short video, recorded by relatives, of herself taking a dip in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri wearing a salwar suit. About two months later she found that the video had been manipulated with AI into an objectionable version showing the same movements with her face and body portrayed 'in a shameful manner'; the fake reel went viral in the week before 20 September and drew objectionable comments and re-sharing. In a public appeal she asked whoever uploaded it to remove it, saying it was a matter of her dignity, that she was mentally very disturbed and had reached a point where she could not step out of her house. She filed a complaint with the cyber-crime police on 16 September 2026; the investigating Rajasthan Police Service officer said they were trying to identify who created and circulated the video and to have it removed, and that identifying the accused would take time. Dainik Bhaskar's English edition reported the case on 20 September in a 'Sunday Big Story' that does not name her.
Jamui, Bihar: police registered a case in September 2026 against a social media user over AI-generated videos of a minor girl who had been sexually harassed and her friend, saying the videos were fake and revealed the girl's identity
A minor girl was sexually harassed and her male friend assaulted by a group in Jamui district, Bihar, on 19 September 2026; a video of the incident spread on social media two days later and the police apprehended several of the accused. According to a Jamui police statement issued on 25 September and reported by the Press Trust of India, the police then registered a case at the cyber police station against a social media user for uploading several AI-generated videos of the girl and her friend. The police called the videos misleading and fake and said they revealed the girl's identity and could affect social harmony; the case was registered under the BNS, the POCSO Act, the Juvenile Justice Act and the IT Act. Separately, The Quint reported finding dozens of AI-generated recreations of the assault on Instagram, almost all revealing identifying details, and quoted the Jamui superintendent of police as saying that some people were making AI-generated content. No outcome of the case against the uploader has been reported.
