Jeju court gives a suspended sentence to a person who showed a woman a police ID forged with AI, claimed a search and took about 3 million won
Around 01:50 on 27 May 2026 a person in their thirties rang the doorbell of a woman living alone in a multi-unit house in Jeju City, South Korea, showed her a police officer's identification card that police say the defendant had forged with AI, and said the defendant had come to carry out a search. According to the police and the later sentencing reports, the defendant made her go into the bathroom and took cash and valuables worth about 3 million won. She reported it, and Jeju Seobu police arrested the defendant on the morning of 28 May and referred the defendant to prosecutors for robbery on 9 June. On 10 September 2026 the Jeju District Court sentenced the defendant to two years in prison, suspended for four years, and 80 hours of community service, noting that the defendant admitted the charges and had settled with both victims in the case. Neither the defendant nor the woman is named.

AI system as recorded: Unnamed AI technology that, according to Jeju Seobu police and the reports of the sentencing, the defendant used to forge a police officer's identification card shown to the victim
What Happened
The robbery. Jeju Seobu police said on 28 May 2026 that at about 01:50 on 27 May a person in their thirties rang the doorbell of a home in a multi-unit house in Jeju City where a woman lived alone, presented a police officer's identification card forged with artificial intelligence, and said the defendant had come to carry out a search. Newsis reports police saying the defendant chose her because the defendant knew she lived alone. The reports of the sentencing say the defendant made her go into the bathroom so that she could not resist and took cash and valuables worth about 3 million won.
Arrest and charges. The woman grew suspicious after the defendant left and reported it, about 17 hours later according to Newsis; Yonhap, reporting on 28 May, says police made an emergency arrest that morning in a car on a Jeju City road. Police first booked the defendant for theft and on 9 June referred the defendant under detention for robbery.
The sentence. On 10 September 2026 the Jeju District Court's second criminal division sentenced the defendant to two years in prison suspended for four years and 80 hours of community service. JoongAng reports that the investigation found the defendant showed the victim a photo of a police ID forged with AI technology. The court said the defendant had targeted victims' weaknesses in a planned way and damaged public trust in police officers, and suspended the sentence because the defendant admitted the charges, showed remorse and had settled with both victims. The second victim was a person from whom the defendant was also charged with stealing about 1 million won earlier the same month; the reports do not say whether the forged ID was used in that theft.
What is not established. The AI tool is not named and how the card was made is not described. The woman's own account is not reported.

What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. Jeju Seobu police, who investigated and arrested the defendant, said the police officer's identification card the defendant presented to the woman to claim a search had been forged with AI, and the sentencing reports say the investigation found the defendant showed her a photo of a police ID forged with AI technology; the defendant admitted the charges in court. The forged card impersonated a police officer toward the woman and was the means by which the defendant gained entry and took her valuables (depicted_or_impersonated). The tool and the method of generation are not described.

One person: the woman shown the forged ID and robbed on 27 May. Busan prosecutors say an investment-fraud suspect used AI images of a fake medical licence and asset records to take 320 million won, then fooled a judge
The Busan Eastern District branch of the prosecutors' office in South Korea announced on 11 February 2026 that it had indicted a man under detention on 6 February for fraud, forging and using private documents, and obstructing official duties by deception. According to the prosecutors, from August to October 2025 he used AI to make fake images of a medical licensing examination certificate and of cryptocurrency holdings, posed as a doctor and businessman with billions of won in assets, and took about 320 million won from victims for supposed cryptocurrency, cruise-ship and medical-centre investments. When police sought his arrest in December 2025, he gave the warrant judge a bank balance certificate showing about 904 million won, which prosecutors say he made by uploading his real certificate to an AI platform and asking it to change the balance; his real balance was 23 won. The judge refused the warrant. Prosecutors later found the certificate was forged and obtained a new warrant. The accused and the victims are not named here.
Taichung, Taiwan: a homeowner who paid a renovation contractor about NT$2.55 million says the construction-progress photos it sent were AI-generated while the house was left full of debris; she has filed a fraud complaint with police, a second homeowner describes similar losses, and the contractor denies using AI images
A homeowner in Taichung's East District hired a renovation business she found through a Facebook fan page to renovate her four-storey house, with work due to start on 20 August 2025 and finish by the end of March 2026 (ETtoday). By the end of March 2026 she had paid NT$2,553,275 while the contractor cited repeated reasons for delay and sent progress photos and payment slips for materials. She became suspicious when an air-conditioning supplier named on one of the contractor's payment slips said it had not received the payment, compared the photos with the site, and ran them through an AI-image detection website, which rated them almost entirely (99.9%) AI-generated; the photos showed workers and fittings that did not exist, and the house was left gutted with construction waste piled on the ground floor (TVBS; CTS; ETtoday). She has reported it to police and, with a lawyer, filed a fraud complaint. A second homeowner in Dali District paid more than NT$2 million to the same contractor, did not receive AI images, and says the business's fan page used AI-generated pictures; CTS reports three victims so far. A designer at the business denied to TVBS that it used AI images to report false progress, and ETtoday reports prosecutors and police are investigating.
Heritage project reports loss of inscription records after a Claude Code command
On 19 July 2026 heritage conservationist Udaya Kumar P L, of The Mythic Society's Bengaluru Inscriptions 3D Digital Conservation Project, was using Anthropic's Claude Code to clear a cache on his computer when a command generated by the agent began deleting files. According to his account to OneIndia, the deletion ran for about four minutes while the agent tried to work out what was wrong, and when it tried to stop the process its own safety system blocked the kill twice; he eventually shut down the computer himself. Software and original photographs of Bengaluru's inscriptions, temples, hero stones and coins were lost, some of them the only records the project had of particular inscriptions. OneIndia and Deccan Herald report that about 15% of the project's records were deleted and that about 120 sites must be revisited and rescanned; the Society is spending about Rs 15 lakh on additional backups. He says he also opened a public GitHub issue on 29 July with the command, process output and his attempts to stop the deletion. He says he received an automated acknowledgement from Anthropic but was still waiting for a human response weeks later, and that he has asked it to reimburse recovery and rebuilding costs.
Chandigarh, India: a PhD scholar met a man on a matrimonial site whose profile showed him in an IPS officer's uniform; police say the photo was made with AI, and she reports losing cash, gold and a laptop before he was arrested in September 2026
A 29-year-old PhD scholar in Chandigarh told police that in March 2026 she found a man's profile on a matrimonial site showing him in uniform, and that he presented himself at different times as an excise assistant commissioner, an IPS officer and a RAW agent. Dainik Bhaskar reports that the police investigation found the uniform photo on the profile was not real and had been made with the help of AI. According to her complaint, he took about Rs 11.5 lakh in cash, gold jewellery and a laptop, with promises of marriage and a government job. Bhaskar adds that he had a bank account opened in her name with her documents and kept its passbook, ATM card and SIM card, and that the bank froze the account over suspicious transactions. The Tribune reports a total of nearly Rs 30 lakh, including about Rs 7.88 lakh in online transfers between March and June. When she asked for her money and belongings back, he threatened to circulate her photographs on social media; the Tribune adds that he also threatened harm to her brother. A case was registered in August. Police arrested a man from Rohtak, Haryana, who was produced in court on Monday 28 September 2026 and remanded for one day. The Tribune's account does not mention AI.
