Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: police arrest four people accused of recording a Canada-based NRI on a video call from a fake Facebook profile, making AI obscene videos and demanding $50,000 under threat of circulating them
Ghaziabad crime branch police announced on 2 October 2026 that they had arrested four members of a sextortion and cyber-fraud gang. According to the police account relayed by the Times of India, Aaj Tak, Navbharat Times and ETV Bharat, the gang contacted a non-resident Indian living in Brampton, Canada, through Facebook Messenger from a fake profile in a woman's name, recorded the person on a video call on 10 September 2026, then demanded $50,000 and threatened to upload the footage and AI-made obscene videos if the money was not paid. The victim was given a bank account in Ghaziabad and reported the extortion to the city's cybercrime team on 17 September. Police registered an FIR under the BNS and the IT Act, said the phone number was linked to 40 cyber-fraud complaints on the national portal and said AI sextortion videos were found on the accused's phones. Police said the gang had operated since 2023; other members were absconding. The account is the police's; the videos were not inspected, and the reports disagree on the victim's gender.

AI system as recorded: AI used to make obscene videos of the victim from video-call footage, according to Ghaziabad police as reported (tool not identified)
What Happened
The extortion. The Times of India reported on 3 October 2026 that, according to Ghaziabad police, the gang created a fake Facebook profile in a woman's name and contacted a Canada-based NRI on Messenger. They allegedly made a video call on 10 September 2026 and recorded the victim, then contacted the victim again a few days later, demanded $50,000 and threatened to upload the footage and AI-made obscene videos if the money was not paid. Aaj Tak and Navbharat Times, relaying the same police account in Hindi, say the victim lives in Brampton and that an objectionable AI video was prepared from the call recording.
The complaint. The victim was given an account number at a bank branch in Ghaziabad's Raj Nagar District Centre and contacted the cybercrime team on 17 September; Aaj Tak says the call came to the police CUG number at about 2:30 at night. Police said the phone number was linked to 40 cyber-fraud complaints on the national NCRB portal and registered an FIR under the BNS and the IT Act.
Arrests. The crime branch arrested four people; the ACP (crime) said other gang members were absconding and that AI sextortion videos had been found on the accused's phones. Police said the gang had been active since 2023, bought bank accounts from other people for about Rs 15,000 each and also ran a share-market investment fraud through a mobile app. Police put the cyber fraud traced to the gang so far at about Rs 6.58 crore; the reports do not say how much of it came from extortion with AI-made videos.
Limits. All four reports relay one police account; no victim statement or court record was read and the videos were not inspected. The Times of India uses male pronouns for the victim and ETV Bharat calls the victim a woman; the public record does not state a gender. Whether the victim paid anything is not reported.
Reported harm
A Canada-based NRI was recorded on a video call by a gang using a fake profile and threatened with the circulation of AI-made obscene videos unless $50,000 was paid, according to Ghaziabad police as reported by four outlets.
Outcome
OngoingGhaziabad police registered an FIR under the BNS and the IT Act and announced on 2 October 2026 the arrest of four gang members; police said other members were absconding and that the investigation of the network and its bank accounts continued. No charge sheet or court proceeding is reported in the sources read.
What remains unknown
- Whether the victim paid any money.
- The victim's gender: the Times of India and ETV Bharat disagree.
- Which AI tool was used and whether the obscene videos were sent to anyone.
- How many of the gang's other victims were threatened with AI-made videos.

Begusarai, Bihar: a 22-year-old woman says a man who had pursued her made a fake nude video of her with AI months earlier to blackmail her, then on 27 September 2026 he and a relative took her to a hotel room where she was beaten and raped and the videos were circulated; FIR registered, SIT formed, both accused arrested
A 22-year-old woman in Begusarai district, Bihar, told police, her lawyer and Dainik Bhaskar that a man from the village of her maternal relatives, who had pursued her and been refused, made a nude video of her with AI about four to five months earlier and sent it to her in an attempt to blackmail her. On the morning of 27 September 2026, she says, his brother-in-law, her neighbour, gave her a motorcycle lift while she was out collecting self-help-group dues and took her to meet him, and the two men led her into a hotel room 'to talk' about the video. In her account the room was locked, she was threatened with a knife, beaten and raped, the assault was filmed, a noose was put round her neck, and the AI-made video and the assault video were sent to WhatsApp groups, including her self-help group's; she hid in the bathroom until the man left. A video of the beating spread on social media. After she spent 28 September going between police stations, an FIR was registered at Begusarai Nagar police station late that night (case 451/26); the SP formed a special investigation team, seized hotel CCTV and the entry register, and one accused was reported arrested by the evening of 29 September (Prabhat Khabar; NewsTak). Dainik Bhaskar reported on 30 September that the main accused had been arrested while fleeing towards Nepal. The AI element rests on the complainant's account; the police statements read describe the assault video and the arrests without characterising the earlier video.
Rajasthan: a social-media influencer's video of a Ganga dip at Haridwar was manipulated with AI into an objectionable reel that went viral; she says she is mentally disturbed and cannot leave her house, and filed a cyber-crime complaint on 16 September 2026
A Rajasthan social-media influencer visited Haridwar with her family in June 2026 and on 6 June uploaded to Instagram a short video, recorded by relatives, of herself taking a dip in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri wearing a salwar suit. About two months later she found that the video had been manipulated with AI into an objectionable version showing the same movements with her face and body portrayed 'in a shameful manner'; the fake reel went viral in the week before 20 September and drew objectionable comments and re-sharing. In a public appeal she asked whoever uploaded it to remove it, saying it was a matter of her dignity, that she was mentally very disturbed and had reached a point where she could not step out of her house. She filed a complaint with the cyber-crime police on 16 September 2026; the investigating Rajasthan Police Service officer said they were trying to identify who created and circulated the video and to have it removed, and that identifying the accused would take time. Dainik Bhaskar's English edition reported the case on 20 September in a 'Sunday Big Story' that does not name her.
Bansdih, Ballia (Uttar Pradesh): a father reports that a local youth made a fake Instagram account in his 17-year-old daughter's name and an AI-generated obscene video from her photograph, sent it to her classmates, friends and relatives, and threatened to kill the family when they objected; police register a case under the IT Act (22-23 September 2026)
The father of a 17-year-old Class 12 student in Bansdih, Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, gave the Bansdih police a written complaint that a young man from the town, a former schoolmate who had been expelled from the school and bore a grudge against the family, took screenshots of his daughter's social-media account, created a fake Instagram ID in her name with a matching photograph, used AI technology to make an obscene video from her photo and circulated it to her classmates, friends and relatives; the complaint says the youth had earlier made two fake accounts using her and her mother's photographs and threatened to kill the whole family and to spread the video further when they objected (Dainik Bhaskar, Hindustan). The father submitted screenshots of the fake account and his daughter's mark-sheet as proof of her age. The station house officer said a case had been ordered registered and the investigation begun; Jagran reports the case under the Information Technology Act. The reports give no dates for the fake accounts, the video or its circulation; September 2026 is the month of the complaint (about 21-22 September) and of the circulation and threats the family describes as continuing, so the event date is recorded as unknown. The family is described as frightened. No arrest is reported.
Jamui, Bihar: police registered a case in September 2026 against a social media user over AI-generated videos of a minor girl who had been sexually harassed and her friend, saying the videos were fake and revealed the girl's identity
A minor girl was sexually harassed and her male friend assaulted by a group in Jamui district, Bihar, on 19 September 2026; a video of the incident spread on social media two days later and the police apprehended several of the accused. According to a Jamui police statement issued on 25 September and reported by the Press Trust of India, the police then registered a case at the cyber police station against a social media user for uploading several AI-generated videos of the girl and her friend. The police called the videos misleading and fake and said they revealed the girl's identity and could affect social harmony; the case was registered under the BNS, the POCSO Act, the Juvenile Justice Act and the IT Act. Separately, The Quint reported finding dozens of AI-generated recreations of the assault on Instagram, almost all revealing identifying details, and quoted the Jamui superintendent of police as saying that some people were making AI-generated content. No outcome of the case against the uploader has been reported.
