Family member's forum account: a worker whose job had been to find the errors of an AI tool their employer added to its database was told in early October 2026 that she was being laid off, with the company citing its decision to introduce AI coding and, according to their child, moving the budget to fixing the AI

In a public post to r/antiai at 21:43 UTC on 3 October 2026, a person writes that their mother was told the previous day that she was being laid off because her company was "Deciding to introduce Artificial Intelligence coding". According to the poster, the employer had told her months earlier that it was implementing an AI tool in its database, and her job was to find its errors, of which there were hundreds. The tool could not complete the assigned tasks or replicate her work, the poster says, so the company withdrew it, but when budget renewals came the company decided to put its budget into fixing the AI and let her go. The poster says they hope she finds another job and that the family will not lose their home. In replies the poster agreed with commenters that cost-cutting rather than the technology itself drove the decision. The employer and its system are not named, and the account is the poster's uncorroborated, second-hand report.

AI system as recorded: An unnamed AI tool the employer implemented in its database (the poster's words: 'a little AI gremlin'), and the employer's stated plan to introduce 'Artificial Intelligence coding'

What Happened

The post. The poster describes the post as "a rant about my mom losing her job to AI" and writes: "Which is just what happened to my mom yesterday."

The stated reason. The poster writes: "She got the news she was being laid off because the company is" "Deciding to introduce Artificial Intelligence coding for the", and does not quote the rest of the employer's message.

The AI tool. According to the poster, "They told her months ago they were implementing a little AI gremlin into their database. Her job was to find its errors, and there were hundreds of them." The tool, they say, could not "complete the assigned tasks or replicate the work she was doing, so they took it away and tabled it", and the family thought her job was safe. Then: "Budget renewals came in, and they decided to move budgeting into fixing the AI and tossing my mother aside."

Effect. The poster writes that they hope "That my mom will find another job" and that the family will not "lose our home". In a reply, they say "My mom is looking at everything".

Thread. Several commenters argued that the layoff reflected cost-cutting rather than the technology. The poster agreed, saying they should not "have made AI the scapegoat", and endorsed a commenter's summary that the company had the mother find the AI's failures and, once it had funding to correct them, brought the AI back and got rid of her: "Yes, that was the point I tried to make."

Limits. Second-hand account by the affected worker's child, uncorroborated. The employer, industry, location and the AI system are not named, and only a fragment of the employer's stated reason is quoted. Whether the AI tool took over the mother's tasks, and how the budget decision was made, are the poster's understanding.

Reported harm

According to her child, a worker whose job had been to find the errors of her employer's AI database tool was told in early October 2026 that she was being laid off, with the employer citing its decision to introduce AI coding and, in the poster's account, moving budget to fixing the AI; the family fears for their home (second-hand forum account, uncorroborated).

Outcome

Ongoing

In a reply about two and a half hours after the post, the poster says their mother "is looking at everything". The poster says they hope the family will not lose their home. No statement from the employer is reported.

What remains unknown

  • The employer, its industry and location, and the AI system it uses.
  • The full text of the employer's stated reason and whether other staff were laid off.
  • Whether the AI tool now performs the mother's former tasks.
  • The financial effect on the family beyond the poster's stated fears.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The poster quotes a fragment of the employer's stated reason for the layoff (introducing AI coding) and says the mother's job had been to find the errors of an AI tool added to the employer's database. The AI system is not named, and whether it performs the mother's former tasks is not established.
