What Happened

A woman in Delhi alleged that AI-altered sexual imagery prompted harassment and threats. The High Court ordered removal of the material and police protection. Her identity was protected in the proceedings.

Reported harm

The complainant reports that an AI-morphed vulgar image of her was paraded on banners before crowds with sexually suggestive slogans, circulated on Instagram and pornographic websites, and followed by threats of rape, acid attack and death that confined her to her home; she describes absolute distress, fear and trauma (her FIR as quoted by the Hindustan Times; her petition as reported by LiveLaw, Bar and Bench and PTI). The High Court found sufficient urgency to order a takedown and police protection; the allegations remain under investigation.

Outcome

Ongoing

A woman in Delhi alleged that AI-altered sexual imagery prompted harassment and threats. The High Court ordered removal of the material and police protection. Her identity was protected in the proceedings.

What remains unknown

  • Who created, printed and displayed the morphed image; the FIR names no accused and the four functionaries named in the complaint and plea have not responded publicly in the reports read.
  • The exact date of the protest at which the banners were displayed: the petition says July 2026 (Ommcom News) while the Hindustan Times refers to 'recent' CJP protests.
  • Whether Meta complied with the 24-hour takedown and whether the pornographic-website uploads have been removed.
  • The tool used; no forensic finding on the image's creation is reported.
  • The content of the police status report due within a week and any arrests; next hearing 14 October 2026.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The complainant's FIR and petition say her face was morphed onto the image with 'AI face-swapping tools' (FIR quoted by the Hindustan Times; petition quoted by LiveLaw and PTI); the police said they are probing the creation of the 'morphed' image and the court called it deepfake content. No forensic finding on how the image was made is reported.

Reported The complainant alleges that protest organisers and demonstrators took her personal photograph without consent, used AI face-swapping tools to morph her face onto a vulgar image alongside the Prime Minister, printed it on banners paraded before crowds with sexually suggestive slogans, recorded and circulated videos on Instagram, and (per her petition) uploaded the images to pornographic websites, after which she received threats of rape, acid attack and death and stayed confined at home; she describes absolute distress, fear and trauma. The petition dates the protest to July 2026 and says she approached the police on 23 September 2026.

Chennai: a former employee downloaded a senior woman colleague's photographs from their company's website, morphed them into obscene images with AI applications and circulated them to the company's staff through fake Instagram accounts from 4 January 2026; Tamil Nadu's cyber-crime wing traced and arrested her (reported 4 February 2026) and she was remanded in judicial custody

From 4 January 2026 several employees of a Chennai company received follow requests from unknown Instagram accounts that then circulated defamatory content, including obscene AI-morphed images of a senior woman employee. On her complaint the State Cyber Crime Investigation Centre of the Tamil Nadu police traced the digital footprints, social-media activity and IP logs to a former employee of the same company who had resigned in October 2025 and, according to police, acted out of resentment and previous enmity to threaten, harass and publicly humiliate the victim; she had taken the photographs from the company's official website and morphed them using various artificial-intelligence applications. She was arrested, produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody; the police press release was reported on 4 and 5 February 2026 and the cyber-crime DGP issued a public warning about social-media misuse. The victim alleged the images were circulated to damage her reputation and cause mental distress.

Galway West, Ireland: broadcaster Gráinne Seoige says an AI-generated sexualised deepfake image of her circulated on WhatsApp while she was a candidate in the 2024 general election, leaving her deeply traumatised with recurring nightmares of being attacked; she says a Garda inquiry could not identify those responsible

Gráinne Seoige, a broadcaster who stood for Fianna Fáil in Galway West in Ireland's 2024 general election, told RTÉ's Prime Time in January 2026 that people close to her alerted her during the campaign to sexualised images of her made with deepfake technology. She says the AI-generated pornographic image was disseminated through WhatsApp, shared hundreds if not thousands of times by her account, and that when gardaí sought its origin some recipients refused to cooperate, so the investigation hit a dead end. She kept silent during the campaign and has described the experience as deeply traumatising, with shame and humiliation lasting almost a year and a half. In a September 2026 interview relayed by RSVP Live from the Sunday Independent she described night terrors of faceless men tearing her clothes off and wearing a long puffer coat everywhere so her body could not be seen. She has since appeared before the Oireachtas media committee (Irish Independent, 21 January 2026), and made a Virgin Media documentary on deepfake abuse, scheduled for broadcast on 5 October 2026. In passages from it quoted by RSVP Live and the Irish Sun on 4 October 2026 she says she was shown the image in September or October 2024, that it made her not want to go outside, that she moved away from her home and that she has had therapy; she also says she believes the image was politically motivated. The tool used to make the image and the person who made it are not identified.
