Adult ChatGPT Plus subscriber says the account was classified as a teen and restricted, and that OpenAI said profiling had to come first; first-person post

In a Reddit post of 11 October 2026, a ChatGPT Plus subscriber who says they are an adult (36, by the post's own account) writes that when OpenAI's age checks rolled out their account was classified as a teen account and put on a restricted account. The poster says they had earlier emailed OpenAI asking for verification options without ID or a photo, received a canned reply about the verification provider Persona, and on escalating to data protection was told they had to be profiled first. The poster says they then cancelled the subscription. OpenAI's Help Center says ChatGPT uses an age prediction system that reads account signals, automatically enables the teen experience when it predicts an account may belong to someone under 18, can get this wrong, and lets adults verify their age to remove it. The account is the poster's own and is not corroborated.

AI system as recorded: ChatGPT's age check that placed the account in the ChatGPT for Teens experience, which the poster calls age verification; OpenAI says such placements use an account's associated or verified age or an age prediction system that reads account signals

What Happened

The classification. The poster writes that they used ChatGPT for creative roleplay, took a free month of Plus, built projects for their fictional universes and subscribed. Then, in the poster's words, age verification rolled out and the account was classified as a teen account, on the poster's 36th birthday. Later in the post they describe being put on a restricted account.

Contact with OpenAI. Before the classification the poster had emailed OpenAI asking about verification options without ID or a photo, such as a credit card. The poster says the reply was a canned answer about the verification provider Persona, and that an escalation to data protection was answered with a statement that they had to be profiled first before anything would be done. The poster then cancelled the subscription.

What OpenAI says the system does. OpenAI's Help Center page on age prediction, archived on 24 September 2026, says ChatGPT uses an age prediction system that looks at signals linked to an account, such as general topics and times of use, and automatically enables the ChatGPT for Teens experience when it predicts an account may belong to someone under 18. The page says the system can get this wrong and that adults placed in the teen experience by mistake can verify their age. It also says the account stays active.

Limits. The post is the poster's own account, written the day it was read; it had no replies when fetched. It gives no date for the classification and does not say which restrictions applied. The poster names a selfie demand as the last straw before leaving and does not say whether verification was attempted. The poster's wider views about engagement design and advertising are opinion and are not recorded as facts here.

Reported harm

According to the poster's own account, ChatGPT classified their adult account as a teen account and restricted it, OpenAI answered a data-protection escalation by saying the poster had to be profiled first, and the poster cancelled the paid subscription.

Outcome

Unknown

The poster says an escalation to data protection was answered with a requirement to be profiled first, and that they then cancelled the Plus subscription. No reply from OpenAI to this post and no change to the account is reported. OpenAI's Help Center says adults placed in the teen experience by mistake can verify their age.

What remains unknown

  • When the classification happened. The post gives no date; it describes about six months of heavy use before the post of 11 October 2026 and places the classification after the poster subscribed, so the record uses that six-month window.
  • Which mechanism classified the account (OpenAI's behaviour-based age prediction or another check); the poster calls it age verification and had not verified.
  • Which restrictions applied to the account, and whether the poster attempted the verification route OpenAI describes.
  • Whether OpenAI has reviewed or reversed the classification.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The poster says that when OpenAI's age checks rolled out, their account was classified as a teen account and put on a restricted account; the post describes asking OpenAI about verification options in advance and does not mention completing a verification. OpenAI's Help Center says ChatGPT may use the age associated with an account, a verified age or age prediction to decide whether the account gets the teen experience, and that its age prediction system reads signals linked to the account and can get this wrong. The post does not name the mechanism. The poster gives their age as 36 and describes no verification, so of the paths OpenAI lists, age prediction is the one that fits the poster's account; this is an inference from OpenAI's page, not a statement in the post. That classification is the system's decision about the poster (made_decision_about), and the restricted account and the cancelled subscription are the consequences the poster reports. The classification rests on the poster's account alone, which does not name the mechanism beyond age verification, so the status is reported.

NSW Reconstruction Authority says a former temporary staff member uploaded 2031 Resilient Homes participants' personal data to ChatGPT without authorisation

The NSW Reconstruction Authority says that between 12 and 15 March 2025 a former temporary staff member (called a former contractor in its first notice) uploaded a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of Northern Rivers Resilient Homes Program information, 10 columns and more than 12,000 rows, to ChatGPT, an AI platform the Authority had not authorised. The Authority disclosed the breach on 6 October 2025, estimating that up to 3000 people were affected, and later said external forensic analysis confirmed that 2031 people had some of their data uploaded, including names, contact details, addresses, dates of birth, sensitive personal and health information and limited financial commentary. It says no driver licence, Medicare, passport or Tax File Numbers were disclosed and that there is no evidence the data is publicly available or was accessed by a third party; whether OpenAI retained or used the data is not addressed. The Authority apologised, contacted affected people with ID Support NSW, offered to compensate the replacement of compromised identity documents and notified the NSW Privacy Commissioner. A program participant told the ABC the information was deeply personal and that they felt concerned. No misuse of the data is reported.

Low ChatGPT

A Norwegian child-safety organisation reports that ChatGPT's behaviour-based age estimation switched an adult staff member's account into teen mode without a request, restricting content and offering an identity check through a third-party verifier as the way out (Barnevakten, 23 September 2026)

Barnevakten, a Norwegian child-safety organisation, reported on 23 September 2026 that one of its staff members was suddenly told by ChatGPT that their account was now in teen mode. ChatGPT's own pages, as described by Barnevakten, say the system turns the filter on when a user's behaviour indicates an age under 18, reducing sensitive or potentially harmful content (graphic violence, viral challenges, sexual or violent role-play, extreme beauty ideals) and offering parental controls and a study mode. Because there is no age check at sign-up, the system estimates age afterwards from conversation topics and times of use, and Barnevakten notes that such guesses can be wrong. An adult who wants out of teen mode can go through an age check run by the company Persona, which depending on the country asks for a real-time selfie and a government ID; Barnevakten questions whether that process is privacy-safe (Persona's terms mention retention of up to three years) and advises using only age checks one trusts. The account's own experience is limited to the unexpected switch and the verification route; no further consequence is described.

Low Character.AI age verification

First-person forum account: a long-time Character.AI user who says they are an adult says the app's AI age verification, run through Persona, kept judging them a minor despite ID photos, answered more than five support tickets only with automated replies, and locked them out of their account

In a public post to r/CharacterAI at 21:47 UTC on 2 October 2026, a person who describes themselves as a veteran user of the Character.AI app says they returned about a month earlier to verify their age, and that the AI verification by Persona assumed they were a minor although they are not. They say they sent photos of their ID, tried desktop and different lighting, and kept getting an error message; that more than five support tickets asking for manual verification drew only replies from automated bots; and that the age verification system has now locked them out of their account. In a reply they say the system should identify people properly instead of "locking it out on permenent basis". A commenter says the same check called them underage. The account is uncorroborated, and Character.AI's and Persona's handling is described only by the poster.

TOPR says two Lithuanian hikers followed an AI assistant's shortcut suggestion into climbing terrain in the Polish Tatras and were evacuated by helicopter

The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue service (TOPR), summarising a busy first week of July 2026, told the Polish Press Agency that two tourists from Lithuania became stuck below Niebieska Turnia in the Polish Tatras. According to the TOPR duty rescuer, as relayed by RMF24 and Onet, the pair wanted to shorten their way to the Valley of Five Polish Lakes and used suggestions from an artificial-intelligence assistant, which pointed them across Świnicka Ławka; they ended up in difficult climbing terrain and were evacuated by helicopter. TVN24's reporter said the event happened at the start of July, that the hikers were using 'one of the popular AI models', that good weather let rescuers locate them quickly and that they were flown to Zakopane. Lithuania's public broadcaster LRT, citing TOPR, reported on 13 July that the emergency call came on the afternoon of 4 July; the hikers' exchanges with the assistant and the product are not stated in the Polish relays; a US outlet reported in October 2026 that the tool was ChatGPT, attributing this to TOPR. No injury is reported.
