Sweden: Economic Crime Authority says pump-and-dump share frauds on small savers used AI; an investor describes AI-made adverts of himself

In October 2025 Swedish media, citing Finansinspektionen, reported that more than 5,000 small savers had lost about half a billion kronor that year in pump-and-dump share frauds, and a Finansinspektionen official said some had lost several million kronor. An investigator at the Economic Crime Authority told TT that the frauds, run from abroad, use a refined method with the latest AI technology. TV4 described the usual pattern as a Facebook tip in which a well-known finance profile appears to recommend a safe investment, leading to a WhatsApp group. The investor Günter Mårder said 30 to 40 adverts and AI-produced films showed him speaking, that about 15 to 20 finance profiles had been used, and that his whole summer went on handling questions. Sveriges Radio reported that the financial journalist Gabriel Mellqvist's identity had been used and that he was frustrated at the damage to his professional reputation and at Meta's inaction. The authority does not say how the AI use was established, and the savers figure is not tied to the AI adverts.

AI system as recorded: Unidentified tools used by fraudsters to produce films and images imitating well-known Swedish finance profiles in Facebook investment adverts; the Economic Crime Authority describes the method as using AI and names no tool

What Happened

The frauds. In October 2025 several Swedish outlets, citing Finansinspektionen, reported that more than 5,000 small savers had lost a total of about half a billion kronor that year in pump-and-dump share frauds. Dagens PS relayed a Finansinspektionen head of department telling SVT that some private individuals had lost several million kronor. TV4 described the usual pattern: a tip on Facebook in which a well-known finance profile appears to recommend a safe share investment, after which people are invited to a WhatsApp group promising free tips; the fraudsters, who already hold cheap shares, sell once savers have pushed the price up.

The AI attribution. An investigator at the Economic Crime Authority told TT, as carried by EFN, that the method was new and refined, run from abroad and using the latest AI technology, and that the investigator could not describe the authority's investigations because of preliminary-investigation secrecy. The authority does not say how it established the AI use or which tools were used.

The depicted finance figures. The investor Günter Mårder told TV4 that he and about 15 to 20 other finance profiles had been used, that he learned of it when people began contacting him, that there were 30 to 40 adverts, and that AI-produced films appeared showing him speaking in a newsroom and a podcast studio associated with him. He said his whole summer went on handling the questions, that it hurt because it concerned his profession, and that he was disappointed in Meta. Sveriges Radio reported that the financial journalist Gabriel Mellqvist's identity had been used in fake Facebook profiles; its English service said he was frustrated that his professional reputation was being damaged, and he told SR he felt great frustration that large companies did not act harder against it.

Limits. Finansinspektionen's figure covers pump-and-dump frauds as a whole; no source says how many of those savers saw an AI-made advert, or whether any saver saw an advert depicting the two men interviewed.

Reported harm

Finansinspektionen, as relayed, counts over 5,000 savers who lost about half a billion kronor in 2025 pump-and-dump frauds; a depicted investor says his summer went on answering questions and that it hurt professionally, and a depicted financial journalist describes frustration at damage to his reputation.

How Harm Occurred

Fraudsters placed Facebook adverts in which well-known Swedish finance profiles appeared, through films and images that one depicted investor and news reports describe as AI-made, in frauds the Economic Crime Authority says use AI technology, to recommend share investments; savers who followed them into WhatsApp groups bought shares the fraudsters then sold, and the depicted finance figures' names and likenesses were used without consent.

Outcome

Ongoing

The Economic Crime Authority said in October 2025 that it was conducting investigations under preliminary-investigation secrecy; no outcome is reported in the inspected sources.

What remains unknown

  • How many of the savers counted by Finansinspektionen saw an AI-made advert rather than another kind of tip, and their individual losses.
  • How the Economic Crime Authority established that AI was used, and which tools generated the films or images.
  • Whether any defrauded saver saw an advert depicting the investor or the journalist interviewed.
  • Whether Meta removed the adverts, and the outcome of the Economic Crime Authority's investigations.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. An investigator at the Swedish Economic Crime Authority, which is investigating these frauds, told TT that the pump-and-dump frauds use a refined method with the latest AI technology. The investor depicted in the adverts says AI-produced films showed him speaking in places associated with him, and that the adverts drew people towards a WhatsApp share-tip group. Finansinspektionen's figures describe the savers' losses. The authority does not say how the AI use was established or which tools were used, and no source examined a particular film.

Bengaluru: actor Rukmini Vasanth says AI-generated photos passed off as hers are fake and files a complaint after AI-morphed photos and videos of her went viral in May 2026; police arrest three people, reported on 19 and 20 June 2026

According to ETV Bharat Kannada (20 June 2026) and Oneindia Kannada (19 June 2026), Bengaluru police arrested three people accused of using AI technology to morph photographs of the actor Rukmini Vasanth and of circulating AI-made photos and videos depicting her on social media. ETV Bharat reports that the material went viral on social media platforms and in some media in May, that it harmed her dignity and privacy and caused her mental harassment, and that she filed a complaint. In a statement on her social media accounts, quoted by ETV Bharat, she said the AI-generated photos circulating as hers were completely fake and that making and spreading manipulated content was a serious violation of privacy. Police seized three mobile phones and the accused were remanded to judicial custody. Oneindia reports that her face had been obscenely altered with AI technology in a video released on the internet. London: the broadcaster Narinder Kaur says that since sexually explicit images made from her Instagram photographs with a nudification app appeared on X in November 2025 she has been tagged in at least 20 more deepfaked pictures and videos, and that she fell into a depression; no perpetrator has been identified (Daily Mail, 30 September 2026)

Narinder Kaur, a 54-year-old broadcaster and regular TV commentator, told the Daily Mail (30 September 2026) that one morning in November 2025 she opened X and found sexually explicit images of herself, made by taking photographs she had shared on Instagram and removing her clothing with a so-called nudification app. Since then she has been tagged in at least 20 more deepfaked pictures and videos, some linking her to Jeffrey Epstein. She says she fell into a depression in the early weeks and her GP suggested antidepressants, that commenters treated the images as real, and that she fears her teenage children will see them. She has reported each image and had numerous police visits, but no perpetrator has been identified because the accounts are anonymous and deleted when reported. Jakarta: AI-manipulated TikTok videos showed toll-road businessman Jusuf Hamka and his daughter in detainee uniforms with bribery and corruption narratives that Hamka denies; a TikTok account holder was arrested in November 2025 and is on trial at the Central Jakarta District Court, where Hamka's side refused restorative justice on 29 September 2026

Indonesian businessman Mohamad Jusuf Hamka reported to Jakarta police on 18 October 2025 that videos circulating on TikTok showed him and his daughter as if wearing prosecutors' detainee uniforms, tied to narratives of corruption, bribery and gratification over the Cawang-Pluit toll concession, which he denies and his lawyers call false; his lawyers say the faces were composited into staged scenes with AI, and that other content called him a 'toll mafia' and posted a fabricated poster of him running for president in 2029. Polda Metro Jaya's cyber directorate arrested the holder of the TikTok accounts on 27 November 2025; Hamka and his lawyers say the defendant admitted to police that he made the content on others' instructions for Rp500,000 per item; tvOneNews and TVRI note this is Hamka's side's claim within the contested case, and Poskota reports it is being examined at trial. The case file was reported complete (P21) on 12 August 2026 and the trial opened at the Central Jakarta District Court on 15 September 2026 under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (Article 35 jo 51(1), maximum 12 years) and alternative counts. Hamka told reporters the content disturbed him and could damage his reputation and that the campaign was systematic. At the 29 September 2026 hearing the judges asked about restorative justice; Hamka's lawyer said there was no room for it unless the defendant named who ordered and paid for the content. The defendant's lawyer said the content related to his work as secretary-general of an anti-corruption committee and that the indictment was unclear.

Alicante pensioner says he lost his savings to a romance scam whose photos and videos police told him were AI-generated of a woman who never existed

A feature carried by Levante-EMV on 25 September 2025 (byline C. Suena, sourced from Diario Información, photographs EFE/Morell) tells the story of a 78-year-old widower and pensioner living in Alicante who, after his wife's death in 2022 and two years of treatment for depression, was advised by his therapists to socialise and explore social networks. On 11 November 2024 he received an email from a woman presenting herself as a 43-year-old doctor in Kazakhstan seeking a serious relationship; with photographs and videos that were in fact created by artificial intelligence she won his trust, and a friend who warned him was rebuffed. Requests for money followed: 2,000 euros for a plane ticket, another 2,000 for unexpected expenses, then a supposed 10,000-euro deposit demanded by the Kazakh government; he never raised that sum in full but sent 8,800 euros in total, part of it from the sale of his flat in Benidorm. On his way to Madrid airport to meet her he received a final email saying she had been detained for carrying a family icon out of the country and needed a fine paid; he went to the National Police, who confirmed a scam: the images and videos were fake, created with AI, and the woman had never existed. He lost all his savings in about three months and now shares a flat with three other pensioners in Alicante; he told his story so that others would not fall into the same trap. A separate Antena 3 Noticias interview of 24 September 2025 dates the first message to 29 November 2024, itemises the 8,800 euros differently, says a television programme he contacted exposed the deception and that he reported it at a police station, and adds that he had to leave his rented flat and was left with a 1,000-euro monthly pension; he told Antena 3 the scam affected him psychologically but that he has overcome it.
