Russia: university expelled a student after its Antiplagiat AI-content check flagged her thesis; Kazan courts ordered reinstatement and damages
RAPSI and BIZNES Online reported on 8 and 10 June 2026 that the Supreme Court of Tatarstan upheld a ruling that a private Moscow university unlawfully expelled a distance-learning student in 2025 over suspected use of AI in her graduation thesis. According to the university's representatives in court as reported, the Antiplagiat.Vuz system first showed about 41% (41.91%) AI-generated text, her supervisor then said the word order had been deliberately disturbed in more than 70% of the text, and a third check showed 11.92%. BIZNES Online also reports, from the court documents, that a university representative told the court the supervisor does not operate the checking system and had not in fact analysed the text for neural-network generation, and could not explain how the system distinguishes borrowed text from AI generation. The university refused the revised work as late (uploaded on Monday 9 June 2025 against a deadline of 8 June) and expelled her; the department's protocol cited a breach of good-faith work in the Antiplagiat.Vuz system. She denied using AI. In January 2026 the Vakhitovsky District Court of Kazan held the expulsion unlawful, ordered her reinstatement for a check of her thesis and, if it met the originality threshold, admission to the defence, and awarded 40,000 roubles in moral damages and a 20,000-rouble fine. The Supreme Court of Tatarstan dismissed the university's appeal: it held that the probabilistic report had not been checked by a competent expert and could not be the sole proof of bad faith, noted that the same text was classified as AI-generated in one report and not in another, and found no evidence that any flagged fragments resulted from her deliberate acts rather than her sources or an incorrect algorithm. The courts also held the deadline had been miscounted.

AI system as recorded: Antiplagiat.Vuz, the university's text-checking system, whose AI-generated-text detection classified parts of the thesis as generated by a neural network
Reported harm
According to the court rulings as RAPSI and BIZNES Online report them, the student was expelled after the university's Antiplagiat.Vuz report classified parts of her thesis as AI-generated; courts later held the expulsion unlawful and ordered her reinstatement and 60,000 roubles in damages and a fine.
Outcome
ResolvedVakhitovsky District Court of Kazan (January 2026): expulsion unlawful, reinstatement for a thesis check and admission to the defence if the originality threshold is met, 40,000 roubles moral damages and a 20,000-rouble fine. Supreme Court of Tatarstan dismissed the university's appeal (reported 8 June 2026); RAPSI reports the decision is in force. The newest item found in the 2026-10-25 searches is a 17 July 2026 lawyer's commentary; no report of her defence or graduation was found.
What remains unknown
- The exact date of the expulsion and of the appellate ruling.
- Whether the student has since defended the thesis or graduated.
- Whether the university's account of 41.91% and of deliberate word-order manipulation was tested by an expert; the courts found it was not.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: supported. The university's Antiplagiat.Vuz report classified parts of the student's thesis as AI-generated (about 41% on the first check and 11.92% on the third, as the university reported in court), and the expulsion rested on a department protocol finding a breach of good-faith work in that system together with a missed deadline. The appellate court held the probabilistic report was not checked by a competent expert and could not be the sole proof, and recorded that the same text was classified differently between reports.
7 claims: 7 reported. What the statuses mean
Reported According to the university's representatives in court as reported, the Antiplagiat.Vuz system showed about 41% (41.91%) AI-generated text on the first check of the student's thesis and 11.92% on a third check, after her supervisor said the word order had been deliberately disturbed in more than 70% of the text.
Causal attribution. The percentages are the university's account in court; neither report was published.

Reviewed for publication 2026-10-25: Published as a concrete adverse decision informed by an AI-text detector: the university's Antiplagiat.Vuz report classified parts of the thesis as AI-generated and the student was expelled. Under the series rule it adds a legal outcome the published detector cases lack: an appellate court holding that a probabilistic AI-content report cannot be the sole proof without expert verification, with an award of moral damages and a fine against the university, and a recorded failure mode in which the same text was classified as AI-generated in one report and not in another.

Adelphi accused Orion Newby of AI plagiarism after a detector flagged his paper; a Nassau County judge ordered the finding expunged
Orion Newby, an Adelphi University first-year student with language and auditory processing disabilities, received a zero in November 2024 on a World Civilizations paper after the professor suspected it was AI-generated and the university relied in part on AI-detection software; he was ordered to attend a plagiarism workshop and his appeal was denied, leaving him one finding from suspension or expulsion. Newby — who had written the paper with 15-20 hours of tutor support through the university's own disability program — said the detectors flagged his citations, and two other detectors scored the paper as human. After the family sued, New York State Supreme Court Judge Randy Sue Marber in Nassau County ruled on 28 January 2026 that Adelphi's finding and its denial of his appeal were 'without valid basis and devoid of reason' and ordered his record expunged. The family spent six figures on legal costs.
Arizona: family says a Gaggle alert on a pupil's unsent joke email led to his suspension; federal court lets their free-speech claim proceed
On 9 October 2024 a Marana Unified School District pupil in Arizona, typing at home on a school Chromebook in front of his mother, wrote a threat-like joke about shooting up the school in a draft email to a teacher and deleted it without sending it, according to his family's federal lawsuit. The family says Gaggle, the AI-based monitoring software the district used, flagged it: the principal received a Gaggle notification with a photograph of the screen and, with the school resource officer, called the mother within the hour. The family says the pupil was suspended for ten days, a long-term suspension hearing imposed 45 days reducible to eleven with counselling, and the superintendent finally affirmed a nine-day suspension in December 2024. In March 2026 the District of Arizona let the family's First Amendment claim proceed and dismissed its procedural due process claims. The district declined to comment to the press.
First-person forum account: a student in an AP Research course says their teacher reported that Turnitin's AI checker found their source annotations '100% AI' and said the checker never gives false accusations; the student says they wrote the work themselves and can show document history
In a public post to r/ApplyingToCollege early on 1 October 2026 (UTC), a student taking the Advanced Placement (AP) Research course writes that their teacher told them that day that their source annotations had been found to be '100% ai' by Turnitin. The student says they did not use AI. They say their document history shows them typing over the course of an hour and that some sentences closely follow notes they wrote for an earlier assignment. They also say they had faced no AI accusation in a research course with the same teacher the year before. By the student's account, the teacher said the matter would be discussed later and that Turnitin's AI checker feedback never ends up being a false accusation. The student says the accusation leaves them upset and unsure how to defend themselves. No grade or disciplinary outcome is reported. The account is uncorroborated, and one commenter doubted it.
Leiden law student's thesis invalidated and exams barred over references he says an AI tool distorted or invented; Council of State annuls fraud sanction
A law student at Leiden University used a generative AI tool to spell-check his bachelor thesis and to check and order its reference list. Seven of the thesis's footnote references (one of them appearing twice, out of 36 footnotes with references) were wrong in the final version; according to his explanation, the tool had distorted some of them, for example with wrong years or author initials, and invented others. On 29 January 2026 the faculty's exam board declared the thesis invalid and excluded him until 28 January 2027 from the thesis track and every exam in the faculty's programmes, reasoning that the fictitious references indicated unauthorised use of generative AI and therefore fraud. The university's appeals board for examinations found in March 2026 that he had plausibly shown he used generative AI to prepare his reference list, which it called a permitted use, but held him responsible for the non-existent sources; the exam board then re-imposed the invalidation with an exclusion until 29 July 2026, and the appeals board upheld that in July. On 14 October 2026 the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State (Raad van State) found his explanation plausible, held that no more than carelessness had been shown, and annulled the sanction; the thesis must now be graded, and the examiner may take the incorrect references into account in the grade.
