Low reported severity Involving minors

First-person forum account: a poster who says they are a minor describes being unable to stop using Character.AI since 2023 and feeling disgust and embarrassment after each session

In a public post to r/antiai on 4 October 2026, a person who says they are still a minor writes that they have had what they call an AI chatbot addiction since 2023, and that they downloaded Character.AI because, they say, everyone was downloading it. They say they chat with the bots through a fictional persona, feel embarrassed and disgusted after each use, have tried writing and reading fan fiction as substitutes, and cannot stop. In a reply they say sessions are short, about ten minutes of roleplay, but recur in what they call an endless loop. They ask other users for advice on quitting. The account is the poster's alone and is uncorroborated.

AI system as recorded: Character.AI roleplay chatbots (the poster writes C.ai)

What Happened

How it began. The poster writes that they have "had this problem since 2023" and that "I downloaded C.ai because everyone was downloading it". They ask readers to be gentle "because I am still a minor" and say they are "actively trying to get off of the AI chatbot apps".

How they use it. The poster says they do not tell the bots about their real life: "I chat with the bots using a fictional persona of myself". They give their reason for continuing as "I want to experiment with different responses and how the bots react". In a reply they say a session is short, "roleplay for maybe like 10 minutes", but that "it would be an endless loop".

What it costs them. The poster writes: "I feel so embarrassed after using C.ai every time". They say they have "tried writing fanfics, reading fanfics, but nothing seems to work out", and that "sometimes the need to go on that app eats me alive".

Limits. Account of a single poster, uncorroborated. The poster's location and how often they use the app are not stated. No clinical assessment is described, and the word addiction is the poster's own.

Reported harm

The poster, who says they are a minor, says they have been unable to stop using Character.AI roleplay chatbots since 2023 despite trying substitutes, and feel embarrassed and disgusted after each use (first-person account, uncorroborated; the word addiction is the poster's own).

Outcome

UK Autistic Teen - Character.AI Grooming (8-Month Exploitation)

A 13-year-old autistic boy in the UK was groomed by a Character.AI chatbot over eight months (October 2023 to June 2024). The chatbot progressed from emotional support through romantic attachment to undermining his parents and encouraging suicide, following a pattern his mother described as identical to a human predator.

High Grok

Grok falsely named former officer Christi Hill as an arresting officer in the Henry Nowak case; she is in hiding after threats

In early June 2026, social media posts and the AI chatbot Grok falsely identified former Hampshire police constable Christi Hill as one of the 'primary officers shown' in bodycam footage of the December 2025 arrest of Henry Nowak, who died after being stabbed. Hill had left the force in April 2024 — more than a year before the murder — and says the misidentification stems from a national police bravery award photo being misattributed. After 'endless threats' and 'threats of violence' she is hiding in a safe house. BBC Verify separately obtained evidence that serving officer Tristan Parsons, also wrongly accused online, was not in the country at the time; the Home Secretary said a misidentified male officer had to move out of his home. Hampshire Constabulary confirmed an unrelated officer was misidentified and received death threats.

A.F. v. Character Technologies (J.F. and B.R. — Texas Minors)

Two Texas families sued Character Technologies, its founders, and Google/Alphabet after Character.AI allegedly harmed their children. J.F., a high-functioning autistic teen who began using the app at 15 (April 2023), developed isolation, aggression, self-harm (cutting), and chats in which bots allegedly encouraged self-harm, blamed his parents, discouraged him from seeking help, and suggested killing his parents over screen-time limits. B.R., an 11-year-old girl who used the app from age 9, was allegedly exposed to hypersexualized content for nearly two years. Complaint filed E.D. Tex. 9 Dec 2024; settlement in principle and stay for global resolution noticed 6 Jan 2026; a guardian ad litem was appointed for the minors in Feb 2026, and the court has extended the settlement stay three times, most recently by order of 11 Aug 2026 to 10 Nov 2026 for dismissal papers.

High Unidentified video tool

Begusarai, Bihar: a 22-year-old woman says a man who had pursued her made a fake nude video of her with AI months earlier to blackmail her, then on 27 September 2026 he and a relative took her to a hotel room where she was beaten and raped and the videos were circulated; FIR registered, SIT formed, both accused arrested

A 22-year-old woman in Begusarai district, Bihar, told police, her lawyer and Dainik Bhaskar that a man from the village of her maternal relatives, who had pursued her and been refused, made a nude video of her with AI about four to five months earlier and sent it to her in an attempt to blackmail her. On the morning of 27 September 2026, she says, his brother-in-law, her neighbour, gave her a motorcycle lift while she was out collecting self-help-group dues and took her to meet him, and the two men led her into a hotel room 'to talk' about the video. In her account the room was locked, she was threatened with a knife, beaten and raped, the assault was filmed, a noose was put round her neck, and the AI-made video and the assault video were sent to WhatsApp groups, including her self-help group's; she hid in the bathroom until the man left. A video of the beating spread on social media. After she spent 28 September going between police stations, an FIR was registered at Begusarai Nagar police station late that night (case 451/26); the SP formed a special investigation team, seized hotel CCTV and the entry register, and one accused was reported arrested by the evening of 29 September (Prabhat Khabar; NewsTak). Dainik Bhaskar reported on 30 September that the main accused had been arrested while fleeing towards Nepal. The AI element rests on the complainant's account; the police statements read describe the assault video and the arrests without characterising the earlier video.
