Reports describe Markham woman losing C$1.7 million after a purported Musk deepfake

Reports relaying a W5 investigation describe a 51-year-old Markham woman who lost about C$1.7 million after a purported AI-altered Elon Musk investment video on Facebook. She reportedly mortgaged her home, borrowed from family and friends and used credit cards while being shown apparent profits. Withdrawal demands for fees and taxes led to further payments. The underlying W5 interview was not independently inspected in full; both written reports share that chain.

San Francisco: rider says a Waymo robotaxi stayed stopped and support declined to move it while two men attacked the car with the rider inside (9 May 2026)

At about 3:30 a.m. on 9 May 2026 a Waymo robotaxi with a rider in the front passenger seat was at a stoplight at Pierce and Lombard streets in San Francisco when a man grabbed its front bumper and the vehicle stopped. The rider told the San Francisco Chronicle and NBC Bay Area that two men then struck the windshield and windows and climbed onto the car while it stayed stationary. The rider says Waymo support staff on the car intercom declined to move it, saying it was obstructed, although the rider saw nothing blocking it, and remembers about 10 minutes before the men left. The Chronicle reports that the car's remote assistant had noticed the car was not moving and decided to call police. The Chronicle reports that officers arrived at 3:46 a.m. The police report, as described by both outlets, identifies Waymo as the victim of malicious mischief and the rider as a witness. Police officials say the rider told officers of no injury. The rider later felt pain behind an ear that the rider believes came from glass, and sought therapy. Waymo spokespeople did not comment on the account in the reporting, and Waymo told the rider in an email that it was unable to access any footage without proper legal justification. The account is the rider's as reported by the Chronicle (16 July 2026) and NBC Bay Area (16 July 2026). The police report was not inspected and is known only through the outlets' descriptions.

Rennes administrative court fines a claimant 500 euros for an abusive tax appeal it found manifestly written with an AI tool and too imprecise to assess

According to Gossement Avocats, which quotes the order, and the court's vice-president on France Inter, an order of 19 August 2026 (n°2508168) of the tribunal administratif de Rennes rejected a claimant’s application contesting a VAT reassessment and fined the claimant 500 euros for an abusive application. As quoted by Gossement Avocats, the order says the application had manifestly been written with an artificial intelligence tool and that its grounds lacked the most elementary details needed to assess them. The court also found it inadmissible because no prior complaint to the tax service was shown, and noted that it repeated a request with substantially the same object rejected in October 2025. The court’s vice-president cited the case on France Inter; commentators stress that AI use alone was not the basis for the fine.

Texas: State Rep. Vikki Goodwin, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, filed a sworn complaint with the Travis County Sheriff's Office on 19 September 2026 alleging that two campaign ads posted on Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's X account used AI-generated video of her saying things she never said; the posts were deleted the next day, her campaign says, and Patrick's campaign calls them obvious parody

On Saturday 19 September 2026 Vikki Goodwin, an Austin state representative running against Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, filed a complaint with a notarised affidavit at the Travis County Sheriff's Office accusing Patrick of violating Texas's 2019 election deepfake law, after his campaign posted two ads (5 and 12 September, on his non-government X account) containing AI-generated videos of her. In the affidavit she stated: 'I did not personally do or say the things depicted in the video; although the "person" in the video appears to be me, it was not actually me', and that the video was posted 'with the intent to deceive Texans, injure a candidate, or influence the result of an election'. She told KUT the ads made it look as though she favoured raising taxes, which she says she opposes in every campaign speech. The sheriff's office confirmed receipt of the complaint without further comment. Patrick's campaign spokesman told the New York Times the material was 'an obvious parody produced to entertain' and that none of it was published within 30 days of the election; the posts were taken down the day after the complaint, according to Goodwin's communications director. Goodwin said she doubted the sheriff's office would follow up now that the posts were removed. A conviction under the law is a class A misdemeanour.
