Orlando-area woman handed thousands of dollars in cash to couriers after a jail-emergency call in a friend’s voice, which she believes was AI-cloned
WKMG News 6 reported on 5 October 2026 that a woman in the Orlando, Florida area received a call from someone who said he was her friend, that he was in jail after drinking and a crash involving a pregnant woman, and that he needed help. She told the station the voice sounded exactly like the friend. A second caller claiming to be a public defender said money was needed to get the friend out of jail. Following the callers' instructions, she put cash in an envelope with a case number and handed thousands of dollars to couriers who came to her home. She refused when the supposed attorney asked for more, and later that day reached the real friend, who had not been in jail or made the call. She described the money as her survival and her nest egg. She believes artificial intelligence may have been used to clone the friend's voice; News 6 says it has not independently determined how the voice was produced.
