AI incidents

Reports of AI-related harm and adverse experiences affecting people’s safety, wellbeing, rights and livelihoods. Explore what happened and the evidence available.

NOPE’s core concern is when AI communicates with a person, acts on their behalf, or depicts or impersonates them. The tracker is wider: it also records consequential decisions and claims about people. Each account is reviewed for publication; claims may remain uncorroborated or disputed. These figures describe the cases collected by NOPE. Coverage varies with discovery, reporting and available evidence. They do not estimate how often AI-related harm occurs.

Response counts currently use each case’s principal recorded outcome. Further proceedings may be described in its account.

Cases in this selection, counted once in their first known event year. A series may continue beyond that year. Reporting and collection dates are excluded. NOPE has searched recent events more thoroughly than earlier years, so bar heights also reflect collection effort.

Coffee County, Georgia: a former sheriff's deputy is indicted on stalking and license-plate-data charges, accused of using the sheriff's office Flock camera and tag-reader systems to track a woman across the county in 2024; she says the experience was terrifying and humiliating

A former Coffee County Sheriff's Office deputy was arrested on 5 May 2026 on an eight-count Coffee County grand jury indictment after a Georgia Bureau of Investigation inquiry, according to WALB and FOX 5 Atlanta. The charges include one count of prohibited use of captured license plate data and one count of stalking. Investigators allege he used the sheriff's office Flock Law Enforcement Camera System, its tag reader system and the state GCIC database for personal reasons. The indictment, as reported by WALB from court documents, alleges he obtained captured license plate data for purposes including stalking and that he followed, tracked and surveilled a woman across multiple locations in Coffee County without her consent to harass and intimidate her; several incidents are alleged between 10 April and 1 May 2024. The woman, who asked WALB not to name her, said the experience was terrifying and humiliating and that she had waited two years for the investigation. The then-sheriff asked the GBI to investigate in 2024, and the deputy was fired when the inquiry began. He was released on bond on 5 May 2026 and was due for arraignment on 27 May.

Cases may have several effects and sources. Mixed accounts qualify when they include a reported harm or adverse experience. People are counted within individual cases where sources support a number; we do not publish a collection-wide total of distinct people.

A source’s existence, the experience it reports and AI’s causal role are separate questions. A lawsuit records allegations unless a subsequent finding establishes them.
