Spain: PSOE weighs legal action over a Partido Popular AI video showing its current and former figures and the prime minister's wife confessing alleged crimes
During the campaign for Spain's 29 November general election, the Partido Popular (PP) posted on its official social media accounts on 21 October 2026 a video made with artificial intelligence, labelled as AI content, that parodies a PSOE campaign video. It shows AI-generated likenesses of the prime minister's wife Begoña Gómez, former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former minister José Luis Ábalos, former PSOE officials Santos Cerdán and Montse Mínguez and former party member Leire Díez, with imitated voices, each appearing to confess alleged crimes or irregular conduct. PSOE sources told Europa Press the party was studying legal action over the video, which elDiario.es and Cadena SER describe as impersonating these people, and PSOE's organisation secretary said the PP had nothing to offer but insults. PP spokespeople defended the video, saying it was clearly recognisable as AI. Europa Press reported more than a million views on X.

What Happened
The video. On Wednesday 21 October 2026 the PP posted on its official accounts a video imitating one published by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that morning, which had answered the visit of Argentina's president to Madrid with the slogan "zurdos y orgullosos" (proud lefties). In the PP version, AI-generated likenesses of six people, the prime minister's wife, a former prime minister, a former minister, two former party officials and a former party member, each say they are "zurdo" because of conduct the video attributes to them, including alleged crimes and irregularities, and the slogan becomes "lerdos y orgullosos" (proud dimwits). elDiario.es reports that the post carries a caption saying the content was made with AI; Cadena SER says the video clones images and voices. Europa Press reported more than a million views on X, more than 500,000 on Instagram and more than 200,000 on TikTok.
The objection. PSOE sources told Europa Press the party was studying legal action and did not rule it out. elDiario.es and Cadena SER describe the video as impersonating these people and manipulating their image and voice. PSOE's organisation secretary told Cadena SER the PP had no project and was using technology for insults. No depicted person's own response is reported in the read sources.
The PP's position. National spokesperson Borja Sémper said there would be a problem if the video had been made with a spurious intention of making people believe the figures were real, but that everyone could see it was a way of using digital tools to expose PSOE hypocrisy. The PP's parliamentary spokesperson said the video was clearly fake because it was AI and accused PSOE of a similar impersonation earlier in the campaign. Party sources said the more PSOE amplified the content, the better.
Reported harm
PSOE says the PP's AI video impersonates its current and former figures and the prime minister's wife, showing them confessing alleged crimes, and is weighing legal action (Europa Press, elDiario.es); no depicted person's own response is reported.
Outcome
OngoingOn 22 October 2026 PSOE sources told Europa Press the party was studying legal action and did not rule it out, but had not decided whether to proceed or on what offences. The PP's national spokesperson defended the video and its parliamentary spokesperson said PSOE could do what it saw fit. No complaint, court filing or electoral-authority decision is reported as of 22 October 2026.
What remains unknown
- Whether any depicted person has responded or taken action personally, and whether PSOE files a complaint or court action.
- Which AI tool the PP used.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: supported. The maker, the PP, labelled the video as AI-made content (elDiario.es) and its spokespeople defended using AI to make it (Europa Press). The AI tool generated the likenesses and imitated voices of the six people shown confessing alleged crimes, and that depiction is what PSOE objects to and is weighing legal action over. No tool is named.
6 claims: 1 corroborated, 5 reported. What the statuses mean
Corroborated On 21 October 2026 the PP posted on its official social media accounts an AI-generated video imitating a PSOE campaign video, in which likenesses of current and former PSOE figures and the prime minister's wife appear to confess alleged crimes and irregular conduct.

Mississippi Senate candidate posted undisclosed AI video of Sen. Hyde-Smith fleeing reporters; her campaign objected and state GOP sought an AG investigation
In early October 2026 the campaign of Scott Colom, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi, posted on social media a 19-second AI-generated video showing a woman made to look like his opponent, Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, running from a crowd of reporters at the U.S. Capitol and getting into a car. Local outlets report that the post called it "based on a true story" and did not disclose that it was made with AI. Hyde-Smith's campaign manager called it an AI video and part of a campaign of "lies and deception". On 22 October the Mississippi Republican Party asked the state Attorney General to investigate whether the video broke a state law against knowingly spreading a deceptive AI depiction of a candidate within 90 days of an election, and to seek an injunction. Colom's campaign manager defended the campaign's use of AI and called the complaint desperate; the law exempts satire and parody, and the Attorney General had not ruled when the sources were read.
Texas: State Rep. Vikki Goodwin, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, filed a sworn complaint with the Travis County Sheriff's Office on 19 September 2026 alleging that two campaign ads posted on Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's X account used AI-generated video of her saying things she never said; the posts were deleted the next day, her campaign says, and Patrick's campaign calls them obvious parody
On Saturday 19 September 2026 Vikki Goodwin, an Austin state representative running against Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, filed a complaint with a notarised affidavit at the Travis County Sheriff's Office accusing Patrick of violating Texas's 2019 election deepfake law, after his campaign posted two ads (5 and 12 September, on his non-government X account) containing AI-generated videos of her. In the affidavit she stated: 'I did not personally do or say the things depicted in the video; although the "person" in the video appears to be me, it was not actually me', and that the video was posted 'with the intent to deceive Texans, injure a candidate, or influence the result of an election'. She told KUT the ads made it look as though she favoured raising taxes, which she says she opposes in every campaign speech. The sheriff's office confirmed receipt of the complaint without further comment. Patrick's campaign spokesman told the New York Times the material was 'an obvious parody produced to entertain' and that none of it was published within 30 days of the election; the posts were taken down the day after the complaint, according to Goodwin's communications director. Goodwin said she doubted the sheriff's office would follow up now that the posts were removed. A conviction under the law is a class A misdemeanour.
Colorado: state senator files complaint over think tank's AI deepfake video depicting her as a cashier keeping change; group calls it satire
The Independence Institute, a libertarian-leaning Colorado think tank opposing Proposition NN on the November 2026 ballot, posted a video on its social media accounts in which an AI-generated likeness of Democratic state Sen. Cathy Kipp, who sponsored the bill that referred the measure to voters, appears as a grocery store clerk who keeps a customer's change and says it will help educate children. CBS Colorado reported that the institute made the video in response to remarks Kipp made on the Senate floor in April 2026. Kipp filed a campaign finance complaint with the Colorado Secretary of State's office on 5 August 2026, according to Colorado Newsline, alleging that the video lacked the disclosure a 2024 state law requires on deepfakes of candidates and officeholders; the video carried only a small line reading "AI generated content because who gets a human cashier these days?". Kipp said it was "disturbing and wrong to use a deepfake, AI-generated video of someone without their consent". The office decided on 19 August to investigate; a spokesperson said it was the first complaint filed within the statutory timeframe for consideration. The institute says the video is satire, which the law exempts, that the law covers candidates rather than ballot measures, and that applying it would violate the First Amendment. CBS Colorado reported on 9 October 2026 that the institute's lawyer had filed a motion to dismiss and planned to sue Kipp and the state for attorney fees, and that the state elections division disputed the satire defence. No decision is reported.
Hungary: prime minister shared an AI video of von der Leyen ordering opposition leader Péter Magyar to fund Ukraine; Magyar called it fake and vowed legal steps
In early February 2026, two months before Hungary's 12 April parliamentary election, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán shared on Facebook a video in which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking Hungarian, phones opposition leader Péter Magyar and tells him to send money to Ukraine, and the depicted Magyar answers that the election must be won first. Orbán's caption said the scene was for now only the work of artificial intelligence but could become reality after 12 April. The BBC reports that a pro-Fidesz activist group shared the video without disclosing that it was made with AI. Magyar said the prime minister was misleading Hungarians with fake videos, announced that he would start legal proceedings and asked followers to report the post to Meta. No outcome of those steps is reported in the sources read.
