Oberbergischer Kreis police say a romance scammer sent a woman apparently AI-made images and voice messages; she paid a mid four-figure sum
The Oberbergischer Kreis police reported on 21 July 2026 that a woman had been in contact since mid-May with an unknown person posing as a widowed doctor from Ukraine, who exchanged chats, pictures and voice messages with her through a messaging service. On 23 June she transferred a mid four-figure sum the supposed doctor requested; bank staff held back a second, high four-figure transfer at the end of June. She reported the fraud on 20 July, and the police say first investigations showed that the pictures and voice messages she had received were apparently created with artificial intelligence.

AI system as recorded: Pictures and voice messages that, according to first investigations by the Oberbergischer Kreis police, were apparently created with artificial intelligence (tool not identified)
What Happened
The contact. According to a release of the Oberbergischer Kreis police of 21 July 2026, a woman from the district had been in contact since mid-May 2026 with an unknown person who claimed to be a widowed doctor from Ukraine and the father of a child. A friend request on social media had been followed by many chats and an exchange of pictures and voice messages over a messaging service.
The payments. On 23 June the supposed doctor asked for a mid four-figure sum to secure his release from a labour camp, and she transferred it. At the end of June the supposed doctor asked for more money for a flight to Germany; attentive bank staff held back that transfer of a high four-figure sum, contacted her and told her it was probably fraud.
The AI finding. She filed a complaint on Monday 20 July. The police say first investigations showed that the pictures and voice messages she received were apparently created with artificial intelligence.
What is not known. The release does not say how the police reached that finding, which tools were used, or whether the first payment was recovered.
Reported harm
According to the Oberbergischer Kreis police, a woman transferred a mid four-figure sum to an online contact posing as a widowed doctor, whose pictures and voice messages first police investigations found were apparently AI-made; a second transfer was stopped by her bank.
Outcome
UnknownBank staff held back a second transfer of a high four-figure sum and told her it was probably fraud. She filed a complaint with the police on Monday 20 July 2026. No suspect or recovery of the first payment is reported.
What remains unknown
- How the police established that the pictures and voice messages were apparently AI-made, and which tools were used.
- The exact amount transferred (the police give a mid four-figure sum) and whether it was recovered.
- Whether a perpetrator has been identified.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The investigating Oberbergischer Kreis police say their first investigations showed that the pictures and voice messages the woman received from the supposed widowed doctor were apparently created with artificial intelligence; those messages presented the fictitious person who asked her for the money she transferred. The police word the finding as apparent and do not disclose its basis or name a tool.

Bengaluru: police say a man paid Rs 1.85 lakh after a dating-app contact threatened to circulate an AI-manipulated obscene video of him
Deccan Herald reports, citing Bengaluru police, that a 23-year-old man lost Rs 1.85 lakh in an alleged sextortion scam. He matched with a woman on a dating app on 27 September 2026 and exchanged numbers; he told police that he then received a WhatsApp video call from her number lasting five to six seconds. Police said he then received an obscene video manipulated using AI and the sender threatened to circulate it unless he paid. Fearing exposure, he borrowed money from a friend and transferred Rs 1.85 lakh to several UPI IDs between 27 and 29 September as the threats continued, a police officer said. Police registered a first information report on his online cybercrime complaint and are trying to trace the suspects. The report does not say how police established that the video was AI-manipulated, and the tool is not named.
China: Shanghai woman loses 800,000 yuan to a fake army officer met on a matchmaking platform; Pudong police point to a sign of AI synthesis in her screenshot of him
In May 2026 a 50-year-old woman in Shanghai met a man on a matchmaking platform who said he was an army regiment commander about to retire and sent officer and identity card photos. He also made a video call on his own initiative, in which he quickly covered his face with his hand to show he was not using AI face-swap. He then steered her into a fake investment platform, and within about a month she put in 800,000 yuan, almost all of it borrowed, and could not withdraw it. A Pudong police anti-fraud officer said that AI synthesis could still be detected and that in her screenshot the man's thumb was clearly longer than a normal person's. The report gives no direct statement that face-swap software was used. The case was under further investigation.
Honduras: national police say a woman faked her own kidnapping twice and sent her partner AI-generated images of injuries to obtain money
Honduras's National Police announced on 14 October 2026 that its anti-kidnapping unit (UNAS) of the Police Investigations Directorate (DPI) had arrested a woman, under a court warrant, on suspicion of simulating a non-existent offence related to kidnapping and of using false documents. According to the police statement, the investigation found that she had faked her own kidnapping twice, in episodes reported on 21 April and 1 June 2026, to obtain money from her partner to pay personal debts, and that she received an initial deposit of 2,000 lempiras after making the partner believe she was being held and that her captors were demanding money. Police say the agents determined that she presumably used artificial-intelligence tools to generate false images of injuries and bruises, which were sent to the partner to make the partner believe she had been beaten by the supposed kidnappers, together with apparently forged hospital documents. According to the investigation file, she said after being located that she planned both episodes and used AI to make the images. She was brought before the issuing court; no court finding is reported.
Washington man reports wiring $13,000 during a 30-hour fake-kidnapping call that used a reported AI copy of the daughter's voice
The Spokesman-Review (8 May 2026) reported that a 75-year-old man in Washington state took a call on Monday 23 March in which a crying voice presented as the man's adult daughter said an accident had happened and asked for help. Male voices then described a collision and said the daughter had been taken hostage. The newspaper states that the daughter's voice on the call was an AI-generated copy and that investigators later surmised the callers used a recording of the daughter's voice with a program that mimicked the speech pattern. Over about 30 hours the callers directed the man to banks and stores in Washington and Idaho, where $13,000 was wired. The man was about to withdraw $17,000 when a bank employee stalled and police were alerted, and police then reached the daughter, who confirmed being at home and safe. The newspaper says none of the wired money had been recovered when the article was published. The man says it took days to start feeling normal again. The report rests on the man's account, a bank employee's account and a police report quoted by the newspaper. The article gives the call date as Monday 23 March without a year. The record uses 2026 because 23 March fell on a Monday only in 2026 among the years 2023 to 2026. The range starts at 2023 because the article says the Federal Trade Commission began warning about AI voice-copy scams as early as 2023, and it ends at 2026 because the article was published on 8 May 2026.
