Woman in NRW, Germany, says AI-altered photos from her Instagram were used in an online sex ad with her face; police complaint filed, prosecutor investigating
A woman in her late twenties from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, learned at the end of June 2026 from an Instagram user that her face appeared in an advertisement on the classifieds platform Markt.de offering sex meetings and other sexual services, according to her account to the Lippische Landes-Zeitung (14 September 2026) and WDR (9 October 2026). WDR reports that the pictures came from her public Instagram account and were partly altered with AI; the extent of the manipulation is unknown. She filed a criminal complaint and engaged a lawyer; the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office told WDR that investigations are ongoing, and a suspect was identified through the ad, who the report notes could himself be a victim of identity theft. The ad has been taken down. She went public with a video on her Instagram account and says the experience changed how she shares online.

AI system as recorded: AI image-manipulation tool, not named; WDR reports that photographs taken from the woman's public Instagram account were partly altered with AI and used in a sex ad on Markt.de
What Happened
The discovery. According to her account to the Lippische Landes-Zeitung, at the end of June 2026 an Instagram user asked the woman since when she had been offering sexual services and whether the profile was really hers, then sent her screenshots. The user had put one of her pictures into a reverse image search and landed on her Instagram account. An unknown person had placed an ad with her face on the public classifieds portal Markt.de advertising sex meetings, swinger parties and other sexual services; the portal lets users act largely anonymously, without a profile picture or real name.
The images. Both reports say the pictures were downloaded from her public Instagram account, which has about 25,000 followers. WDR reports that the pictures were partly altered with AI and calls it a case of deepfake; the LZ writes that she apparently became a victim of deepfakes. How many such images exist and when the use began is unknown; she told the LZ it could have started months earlier. No tool is named, and no police or prosecutor statement about the images themselves is reported.
Complaint and investigation. She filed a criminal complaint with the police at once and engaged a lawyer, who applied for access to the file. The Bielefeld public prosecutor's office told WDR that investigations are ongoing and did not answer how many comparable cases it has, saying such proceedings are not recorded separately. A suspect's name emerged from the ad; she does not know the man and did not contact him. WDR notes he could himself be a victim of identity theft and that the further investigation must show this. The ad has since disappeared from the internet.
Consequences. She describes being shocked and stunned, calls the ad damaging to her reputation and inhuman, and says she stresses repeatedly that she is not on dating platforms and offers no sexual services. She considered stopping her Instagram activity, now considers more carefully what she posts and posts it only later, and says the worst part is losing the feeling that she can safely share her own life. She went public with a video on her account, which drew supportive comments, and hopes for a trial and a just penalty.
Reported harm
According to her account to two outlets, an unknown person used pictures from the woman's Instagram account, partly altered with AI per WDR, in a Markt.de ad offering sexual services with her face; an Instagram user confronted her about it, she filed a criminal complaint, describes shock and reputational damage, and says the episode changed how she shares online.
Outcome
OngoingCriminal complaint filed with the police (WDR's source list records an inquiry to the Minden-Lübbecke police); the case lies with the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office, which told WDR that investigations are ongoing and could not say what penalty a conviction would carry. The woman's lawyer applied for access to the file and a suspect's name emerged from the Markt.de ad; WDR notes the man could himself be a victim of identity theft. The ad is no longer online. No charge or court proceeding is reported.
What remains unknown
- When the ad was placed and how many altered images exist; she told the LZ it could have begun months before the end-of-June discovery, and WDR says the extent of the fakes is unknown. incident_date is the month of discovery.
- Which tool altered the images and how much of each picture was altered; WDR says 'partly altered with AI' and no official body has characterised the images in the reports.
- Who placed the ad and where: a name emerged from the ad, but WDR notes the man could himself be an identity-theft victim; no charge is reported.
- Her exact age: the LZ (September) gives 27 and WDR (October) gives 28.
- How many people saw or responded to the ad; only the one Instagram user who alerted her is described.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. WDR reports that the pictures used in the Markt.de ad came from the woman's Instagram account and were partly altered with AI ('zum Teil mit KI verändert'), and that someone offered sex meetings with her face; the Lippische Landes-Zeitung writes that she apparently became a victim of deepfakes, images generated or manipulated with AI. The AI alteration of her photographs is what depicts her in the ad (depicted_or_impersonated), and the ad with her face is the harm she reports: being confronted as a provider of sexual services, filing a criminal complaint and changing how she shares online. The description of the images as AI-altered is the broadcaster's; no tool is named, the extent of the alteration is unknown by WDR's own account, and no police or prosecutor characterisation of the images is reported, so the status is reported.
5 claims: 1 corroborated, 4 reported. What the statuses mean
Reported At the end of June 2026 an Instagram user asked the woman since when she offered sexual services and sent her screenshots; an unknown person had placed an ad with her face on the classifieds platform Markt.de advertising sex meetings and other sexual services.
Causal attribution. The woman's own account as told to two outlets; both rest on the same witness and the screenshots she received, so the claim is reported.

Both reports place the woman in Hille, North Rhine-Westphalia (WDR's regional desk for the Minden-Lübbecke district; the LZ dateline 'Hille.'), the ad on the German classifieds portal Markt.de, and the complaint with the police and the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office; the discovery and the complaint happened there. Where the unknown ad poster acted is not reported. No court is involved, so court_countries is empty.
Reviewed for publication 2026-10-10: Published as a core case on two German reports with the woman's own account: at the end of June 2026 she learned that pictures from her public Instagram account, partly altered with AI according to WDR, were being used in a Markt.de ad offering sexual services with her face; she filed a criminal complaint, the Bielefeld public prosecutor confirmed to WDR that investigations are ongoing, and the ad has been taken down. She is named in both reports because she went public, and is not named here; the suspect is unnamed in the sources. The AI alteration rests on the broadcaster's description and its extent is unknown.

Chennai: a former employee downloaded a senior woman colleague's photographs from their company's website, morphed them into obscene images with AI applications and circulated them to the company's staff through fake Instagram accounts from 4 January 2026; Tamil Nadu's cyber-crime wing traced and arrested her (reported 4 February 2026) and she was remanded in judicial custody
From 4 January 2026 several employees of a Chennai company received follow requests from unknown Instagram accounts that then circulated defamatory content, including obscene AI-morphed images of a senior woman employee. On her complaint the State Cyber Crime Investigation Centre of the Tamil Nadu police traced the digital footprints, social-media activity and IP logs to a former employee of the same company who had resigned in October 2025 and, according to police, acted out of resentment and previous enmity to threaten, harass and publicly humiliate the victim; she had taken the photographs from the company's official website and morphed them using various artificial-intelligence applications. She was arrested, produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody; the police press release was reported on 4 and 5 February 2026 and the cyber-crime DGP issued a public warning about social-media misuse. The victim alleged the images were circulated to damage her reputation and cause mental distress.
