Florida sheriff says a prison inmate used AI on a contraband phone to make thousands of sexual images of the child victim of his original case
The Martin County Sheriff's Office in Florida said on 22 October 2026 that a man serving a 25-year sentence for child sexual abuse offences used a contraband phone in his cell at Martin Correctional Institution to communicate with a child through social media and to create, with artificial intelligence, thousands of sexually explicit images depicting the victim of his original case. Detectives had received an Internet Crimes Against Children tip the previous month about a phone downloading large amounts of child sexual abuse material; prison staff recovered the phone. Sheriff John Budensiek said the man was 'continuing, essentially, to revictimize our victim' from prison, that the victim had been notified, and that investigators do not believe the AI images of the original victim were among the images he traded with others. The sheriff also said he sent an AI-generated nude image of a man to young girls on Snapchat, none of whom appeared to engage. He is expected to face additional charges (CBS12). The allegations are unproven.

AI system as recorded: An AI image tool, not named by the sheriff's office, used on a contraband phone to create sexually explicit images of a child
What Happened
The sheriff's account. According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, as reported by CBS12, a man held at Martin Correctional Institution for offences originating in Broward County came to investigators' attention through a tip that he was having inappropriate communication with a child. Sheriff John Budensiek said detectives received an Internet Crimes Against Children tip the previous month about a phone downloading large amounts of child sexual abuse material; investigators traced the device to the man's cell and prison staff recovered it. Special Victims Unit detectives, working with the correctional facilities, determined that he communicated with the child through social media and used artificial intelligence to create thousands of sexually explicit images depicting the victim from his original case. The sheriff said investigators do not believe the AI-generated images of the original victim were among the images he traded with others, and that the victim has been notified.
Other conduct described. The sheriff said the man sent an AI-generated nude image of a man to young girls on Snapchat, estimating it reached hundreds to thousands of children, none of whom appeared to engage with him. These recipients are not counted as harmed people in this record.
Background. CBS12 reports that a Broward County judge sentenced the man in September 2024 to 25 years in prison for lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12, and that he also faces federal charges from that case. The Florida Department of Corrections told CBS12 it has a zero-tolerance policy on contraband phones.
Limits. The AI tool, how investigators established that the images were AI-generated, when they were made, and whether the child he communicated with is the original victim are not stated. No new charge had been filed when the report was published.
Reported harm
According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the child victim of a man's original abuse case was depicted in thousands of sexually explicit images he created with AI from prison; the sheriff called it continuing to revictimize the victim, who has been notified (CBS12).
Outcome
OngoingThe sheriff's office said on 22 October 2026 that the man would be taken to the Martin County Jail and is expected to face additional charges related to child sexual abuse material and other charges; no charge, court appearance or plea is reported yet. He is already serving a 25-year sentence imposed in Broward County for lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12 and faces federal charges from that case (CBS12).
What remains unknown
- Which AI tool was used and how investigators established that the images were AI-generated.
- When the images were created, and whether the child he communicated with is the original victim or another child.
- The charges eventually filed and any court outcome.
- The victim's own account of the effect.

Henderson, Kentucky: police identified AI-generated nude images of two middle-school children on a device after a report that such images were being created and shown to other students at South Middle School; a juvenile was lodged at the juvenile detention centre on charges of distributing sexually explicit images without consent and possessing and distributing matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor
Henderson Police said that on 'last Thursday' (17 September 2026) they received a report that AI-generated nude images of children were being created and shown to other students at South Middle School in Henderson, Kentucky. During the investigation officers found and identified AI-generated photographs of two minor victims on a digital device. A juvenile accused of sharing the images was lodged at the Juvenile Detention Center on three charge types: distribution of sexually explicit images without consent; two counts of possession or viewing of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12 and under 18; and distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12 and under 18. The school said on Monday 21 September that it was aware of a situation involving a student allegedly misusing artificial intelligence and inappropriate images, that the police investigation was active and that it had remained in communication with the families involved. 14 News (WFIE) reported the case on 21 September; WKYT carried the same report. The tool is not named. The depicted children's exact ages are not reported, though the charge descriptors put them between 12 and 18. The accused is described as a South Middle School student; the accused's age and any relationship to the depicted children beyond attending the same school are not reported.
Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends
On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. The tool is not named. The juveniles are not named in any report.

Illinois teacher charged after prosecutors say his phone held students' photos altered with an AI app into sexual images
Illinois police and prosecutors charged a middle-school teacher in July 2026 with eight felony child-pornography counts. They say a forensic examination of his phone found photographs of students, taken at school, that had been altered with an AI app into nude or explicit images, and prosecutors told a detention hearing the app was on the phone. A judge ordered him detained and the school board dismissed him; the charges are unproven.
