Keraniganj, Bangladesh: a 22-year-old expatriate in Italy and his mother lost about Tk 7 lakh to a man who ran a Facebook page with AI-made photos and videos of a woman in army uniform and talked to him in a woman's voice; PBI arrested the man in September 2026

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Dhaka District said at a press briefing on 27 September 2026 that a man had run a Facebook page called 'Lady Soldier' that posted AI-made photos and videos of a woman in Bangladesh Army uniform. Through the page he built a romantic relationship with a 22-year-old man from Keraniganj who lives in Italy, speaking to him in a woman's voice on Messenger and Imo calls. According to PBI, about Tk 7 lakh was taken in instalments through bKash and Nagad from the young man in Italy and from his mother in Bangladesh, partly by citing the accused's own mother's illness. His mother first filed a complaint case in court, and a case was then filed at Keraniganj Model police station on 10 September. PBI arrested a 35-year-old man in Dhaka on 20 September and seized three phones. PBI says he gave a confessional statement in court on 23 September.

AI system as recorded: AI-made photos and videos of a woman in Bangladesh Army uniform posted on a Facebook page called 'Lady Soldier', per PBI Dhaka District; the tool is not named. The voice on calls was the accused's own, per PBI

What Happened

The page and the relationship. At a press briefing at the PBI Dhaka District office on Sunday 27 September 2026, Superintendent of Police M. N. Morshed described the case. According to PBI, a Facebook page called 'Lady Soldier/Nari Joddha' posted photos and videos of a woman in Bangladesh Army uniform. The reports say these were made with AI. The victim, a 22-year-old from Keraniganj who lives in Italy, came into contact with the page. The accused then kept up a romantic relationship with him through Facebook Messenger and voice calls on Imo. PBI says the accused can speak in a woman's voice, so the voice on the calls was his own.

The money. PBI says about Tk 7 lakh was taken at different times through the mobile-money services bKash and Nagad, from the young man in Italy and from his mother in Bangladesh. Part of the money was requested by citing the accused's own mother's illness (Gulf Bangla; DesheBideshe).

Investigation and arrest. The victim's mother first filed a complaint case (CR case) in court. After tracing the mobile-money transactions, a case was filed at Keraniganj Model police station on 10 September, and PBI Dhaka District took it over on 13 September. PBI arrested a 35-year-old man in the Darus Salam area of Dhaka on 20 September and seized three phones and SIMs used for the bKash and Nagad accounts. After one day's remand he gave a confessional statement on 23 September, according to PBI. PBI also says a warrant was outstanding against him in an earlier case in a Kishoreganj court, and that it is checking whether others were involved.

Limits. Both reports read relay the PBI briefing. Neither names the tool used to make the images and videos or says how PBI established that they were AI-made. The dates of the relationship and the payments are not reported.

Reported harm

A young expatriate and his mother lost about Tk 7 lakh to a man who drew him into a romance through a Facebook page posting AI-made photos and videos of a female soldier (PBI Dhaka District, via Gulf Bangla and DesheBideshe).

Outcome

Ongoing

A case was filed at Keraniganj Model police station on 10 September 2026 and taken over by PBI Dhaka District on 13 September. PBI arrested the accused in Darus Salam, Dhaka, on 20 September; a court granted one day's remand on 21 September, and on 23 September he gave a confessional statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to PBI. PBI says the investigation continues (Gulf Bangla; DesheBideshe).

What remains unknown

  • Which tool made the photos and videos, and how PBI established that they were AI-made.
  • When the relationship began and when the payments were made.
  • Whether other people were targeted through the same page, and whether others were involved, which PBI says it is checking.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. DesheBideshe attributes to PBI Dhaka District the statement that the Facebook page posted photos and videos of a woman in army uniform made with AI technology. Gulf Bangla states the AI use in its lead as an allegation, and its paraphrase of the superintendent's briefing mentions the uniform photos and videos without AI. Neither report names the tool or says how this was established. PBI says the accused spoke in a woman's voice himself. The AI-made material depicted the female-soldier persona the accused presented, no source says whether any real woman's likeness was used, and the victim's conversations were with the accused, so none of the listed relations between an AI system and him is established. The relation is recorded as unknown.

PBI says money was taken from the young man in Italy and from his mother in Bangladesh, whose home is in Keraniganj; the accused was arrested in Dhaka and the case is before Bangladeshi police and courts (DesheBideshe; Gulf Bangla). The young man was living in Italy when the money was taken from him and his mother was in Bangladesh, so the event spans both countries; no source states where the accused was when he ran the page.

Alicante: a 78-year-old widower, advised by his therapists after a bereavement to socialise and explore social networks, sent 8,800 euros over about three months to a 'doctor from Kazakhstan' who courted him by email with photographs and videos the National Police later confirmed were AI-generated of a woman who never existed; part of the money came from selling his flat and he now shares a flat with three other pensioners

A feature carried by Levante-EMV on 25 September 2025 (byline C. Suena, sourced from Diario Información, photographs EFE/Morell) tells the story of a 78-year-old widower and pensioner living in Alicante who, after his wife's death in 2022 and two years of treatment for depression, was advised by his therapists to socialise and explore social networks. On 11 November 2024 he received an email from a woman presenting herself as a 43-year-old doctor in Kazakhstan seeking a serious relationship; with photographs and videos that were in fact created by artificial intelligence she won his trust, and a friend who warned him was rebuffed. Requests for money followed: 2,000 euros for a plane ticket, another 2,000 for unexpected expenses, then a supposed 10,000-euro deposit demanded by the Kazakh government; he never raised that sum in full but sent 8,800 euros in total, part of it from the sale of his flat in Benidorm. On his way to Madrid airport to meet her he received a final email saying she had been detained for carrying a family icon out of the country and needed a fine paid; he went to the National Police, who confirmed a scam: the images and videos were fake, created with AI, and the woman had never existed. He lost all his savings in about three months and now shares a flat with three other pensioners in Alicante; he told his story so that others would not fall into the same trap.

An 80-year-old woman sent romance scammers she met on Facebook money including £10,000 hidden in a book after they used AI to alter their appearance in photos and video calls and later told her of a kidnapping with a ransom demand; the BBC reported (29 September 2026) that she sent £140,000 in total

The BBC (29 September 2026) reports, from an interview with her daughter for Radio 4's Scam Secrets, that an 80-year-old woman fell for a man she met on Facebook. The scammers used AI to change their appearance in photos and video calls. She posted £10,000 in cash hidden in a hollowed-out book to a Shanghai hospital where he supposedly awaited an operation; later, in the BBC's words, a new man came on the scene who had been kidnapped and would be killed if she did not pay a ransom. In total, the BBC says, she sent £140,000 to the scammers; her bank has returned £45,000. Her daughter spotted the deepfake on a video call, but the woman did not believe her and said her daughter made her feel disgusted and ashamed. The daughter, who holds a lasting power of attorney, set up safeguards with the bank, changed her mother's number three times (each new number reached the scammers) and eventually replaced her smartphone. The BBC does not say whether a ransom was paid.

Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh: police register a case after a woman's family says a relative from Uttar Pradesh used AI to make obscene photos and videos of her and, over seven to eight months, extorted about ₹50 lakh from her with threats to circulate them and to kill her husband and children

Nai Dunia reported on 1 October 2026 that police in Neemuch City, Madhya Pradesh, had registered a case against a man from Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, who is a relative of a local woman through her own family (the complainant husband's in-laws' side). According to the complaint filed by her husband, the man used AI to edit photos and videos of the woman into obscene, objectionable material, sent them to her phone and blackmailed her. When she resisted he threatened to kill her husband and two children, and he threatened to spread the material to shame her socially and within the family. Over about seven to eight months, the complaint says, he sent QR codes of 20 to 25 different people to her phone and extracted roughly ₹50 lakh in 50 to 60 payments, which she sent through a neighbour and other women. The man had lived in the family's home and worked at the husband's business for about six months two to two and a half years earlier, which the complainant says gave him knowledge of the family's income and property. Nai Dunia reported that police were investigating and trying to arrest the accused. The account is the complainant's as reported by one newspaper; the images were not inspected.

Southampton resident reports about five months of AI-generated celebrity persona messages and a £200 gift-card payment

The Daily Echo (29 June 2025), the Daily Mail (1 July 2025), and The Sun and the New York Post (2 July 2025) reported that a Southampton resident said the resident had been 'relentlessly' sent AI-generated or doctored celebrity images and videos on Facebook for about five months, with a fake prize certificate and requests for an activation fee to unlock a prize of £500,000 and a car. The resident said one persona presented as a celebrity said she loved the resident and asked for money, and that the resident paid £200 in Apple gift cards. The resident also said the messages were affecting the resident's mental health and said an acquaintance had lost over £1,000 to the same kind of scam (second-hand, not counted here). A University of Southampton AI expert described the messages as a phishing scam using an AI-generated prize certificate. All outlets rest on the resident's own account, and none reports verifying the messages. The start date is not established.
