Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh: a woman is arrested and later refused bail after a railway officer's wife complained that she sent an AI-made objectionable image of the officer, demanded ₹15 lakh and threatened to circulate pictures of women in the family

Jhansi police arrested a 27-year-old woman in Prayagraj in September 2026 on charges of editing photos with AI, blackmail and extortion, after the wife of a senior railway officer living in Jhansi filed an FIR on 2 August 2026. According to the complaint as relayed by Aaj Tak, UP Tak, Dainik Bhaskar and Amar Ujala, the woman threatened to circulate objectionable pictures of women in the family, demanded ₹15 lakh and threatened to kill the family, and out of fear the family paid her ₹40,000 in total on different dates between January and June 2026. On 31 July she sent an objectionable image of the officer to his wife's phone, an image police say she made with AI. Aaj Tak places the ₹15 lakh demand after that image; Dainik Bhaskar reports the complaint as dating the demand and a death threat to the woman's visit to the family's government house on 2 June. Police recovered two phones and a laptop, and Amar Ujala reports that police will have the images examined forensically. On 1 October 2026 an Additional Sessions Judge in Jhansi rejected the woman's bail plea. In police custody after her arrest she said the FIR against her was fake. The images were not inspected.

AI system as recorded: AI used to make or edit objectionable images of a railway officer and, per some reports, women of his family, according to the complaint and police as reported (tool not identified)

What Happened

The complaint. The wife of a senior railway officer living in a railway colony in Jhansi filed an FIR at Nawabad police station on 2 August 2026. Aaj Tak and UP Tak, quoting the complaint and police, report that the accused had been blackmailing the officer and his family and taking money on different dates since 13 January 2026. On 31 July 2026, according to police, she prepared an objectionable image of the officer with AI and sent it to his wife's number; Aaj Tak reports that she then demanded ₹15 lakh. She also said she held pictures of other unmarried women in the family and threatened to damage their reputation by circulating them, and threatened to kill the family. Dainik Bhaskar quotes the complaint as saying she threatened to circulate AI-edited objectionable photos of the women of the household on social media. Dainik Bhaskar reports the complaint as saying the family made seven Google Pay payments between January and June 2026 out of fear of that threat, and that she demanded ₹15 lakh and threatened to kill the family during a visit to the officer's government house on 2 June. Amar Ujala reports the complaint as saying the wife paid her ₹40,000 in total on different dates out of fear.

Arrest and custody. Jhansi police traced the woman to Prayagraj and arrested her there; an Additional Superintendent of Police said she was arrested on charges of editing photos with AI, blackmail and illegal extortion. Police recovered two mobile phones and a laptop. Amar Ujala reported on 12 September that she had been sent to 14 days' judicial custody, that police had taken the images the complaint relied on and that the images would be examined forensically to establish their authenticity.

Bail. Dainik Bhaskar reported on 2 October 2026 that on Thursday (1 October) an Additional Sessions Judge rejected her bail plea after the district government counsel (crime) and the complainant's lawyer opposed it.

Dispute and limits. In police custody after her arrest, Dainik Bhaskar reported, the woman said a fake FIR had been registered against her. The reports describe the depicted people differently. Aaj Tak and UP Tak say the AI image was of the officer. Dainik Bhaskar quotes the complaint about AI-edited photos of the household's women and says an edited objectionable photo of the officer was sent to the wife on 31 July. Amar Ujala reports the complaint as saying photos of the wife and the family were edited to make them objectionable. No forensic result has been reported and the images were not inspected. The sources name the accused, and Dainik Bhaskar, Amar Ujala and Tirandaj also name the officer and his wife; none of them is named here; the officer's exact post is also omitted.

Reported harm

A railway officer's wife paid ₹40,000 between January and June 2026 under threats to circulate AI-edited objectionable photos of the household's women, faced a ₹15 lakh demand and a death threat, and on 31 July was sent an objectionable image of her husband that police say was made with AI, according to her complaint and police as reported; the accused says the FIR is fake.

Outcome

Ongoing

Nawabad police in Jhansi registered an FIR on the wife's complaint on 2 August 2026 and arrested the accused in Prayagraj in September 2026 on charges of editing photos with AI, blackmail and extortion; she was sent to 14 days' judicial custody. Police said the images would be examined forensically. On 1 October 2026 an Additional Sessions Judge rejected her bail plea after the prosecution and the complainant opposed it. No charge sheet or forensic finding is reported in the sources read.

What remains unknown

  • The result of the forensic examination of the images and which AI tool, if any, was used.
  • Whether the women of the family were depicted in AI-made images or only threatened.
  • How the accused came into contact with the officer and the nature of their earlier dealings, which Dainik Bhaskar says were not yet clear.
  • Whether a charge sheet has been filed.

Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh): police say a retired official was pressured into transferring about Rs 2.36 crore over one to one-and-a-half months by extortionists who posed as judicial and government officials and used AI-made fake nude images to threaten him; three arrested after a bank manager's alert (September 2026)

Sonbhadra police say a retired official in Uttar Pradesh transferred about Rs 2.36 crore into accounts named by extortionists, including money raised through a loan, before a State Bank of India manager noticed the repeated transfers on 22 September 2026 and alerted the cyber crime police station. At a press briefing on 25 September the superintendent of police said the fraudsters had frightened the man by invoking the higher judiciary and senior government officials (a so-called digital arrest) and had used AI to create fake obscene or nude images to blackmail him with threats of defamation and harm to his family (Times of India, Amar Ujala, ETV Bharat, Newstrack). Police froze about Rs 75 lakh, registered an FIR and arrested three people, including the alleged organiser; the outlets relay one police account, and they describe the AI element differently (images of the victim, or images sent to him during a WhatsApp chat with someone posing as a woman).

Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh: police register a case after a woman's family says a relative from Uttar Pradesh used AI to make obscene photos and videos of her and, over seven to eight months, extorted about ₹50 lakh from her with threats to circulate them and to kill her husband and children

Nai Dunia reported on 1 October 2026 that police in Neemuch City, Madhya Pradesh, had registered a case against a man from Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, who is a relative of a local woman through her own family (the complainant husband's in-laws' side). According to the complaint filed by her husband, the man used AI to edit photos and videos of the woman into obscene, objectionable material, sent them to her phone and blackmailed her. When she resisted he threatened to kill her husband and two children, and he threatened to spread the material to shame her socially and within the family. Over about seven to eight months, the complaint says, he sent QR codes of 20 to 25 different people to her phone and extracted roughly ₹50 lakh in 50 to 60 payments, which she sent through a neighbour and other women. The man had lived in the family's home and worked at the husband's business for about six months two to two and a half years earlier, which the complainant says gave him knowledge of the family's income and property. Nai Dunia reported that police were investigating and trying to arrest the accused. The account is the complainant's as reported by one newspaper; the images were not inspected.

Indore: an engineer was arrested at the end of January 2026 for a seven-month campaign of posting morphed obscene images of a woman and her sister, with threatening letters, to their relatives and neighbours and pasting posters near their home after the family rejected his marriage proposal; one Hindi report attributes the morphing to AI, citing a police forensic finding (Times of India, Free Press Journal, Patrika, NewsTak, 30-31 January 2026)

Indore police said at the end of January 2026 that the crime branch had arrested an engineer working as a data analyst after a woman complained at Banganga police station in July 2025 that an unknown person was mailing letters with abusive content and morphed nude photographs of her and her sister to her, her relatives and neighbours, and pasting posters near their house, causing mental harassment and social embarrassment. Police said the accused had approached the complainant's sister through a matrimonial website, that the proposal fell through over a horoscope mismatch, and that he then sought revenge by sending the material about seven times between July 2025 and January 2026 from post offices in Ujjain, Dewas, Khategaon, Ashta and Dhar, wearing a mask and cap and changing buses to avoid being traced; NewsTak adds that he also threatened the family with an acid attack and that a laptop and printer were seized. The case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the IT Act and the SC/ST Act and he was remanded. Patrika reports that the obscene images were created with AI and that police said digital forensics found AI-generated images; the English reports describe them as morphed without naming the technology, so the AI attribution rests on one outlet.
