Texas: sheriff says a 17-year-old student altered a classmate's image with AI in November 2025 to appear nude and posted it on Snapchat; charged April 2026

A county sheriff's office in East Texas said on 24 April 2026 that a 17-year-old high-school student had admitted altering an image of a classmate with AI to make the classmate appear nude and posting it on a public Snapchat story, then removing it. The sheriff's office said its investigation concluded the image was altered on 25 November 2025; the posting date is not separately stated. The image stayed on Snapchat for a few minutes and at least one person took screenshots. The school district first received a report of the image on 13 April 2026 and the criminal investigation began on 16 April 2026. The student was arrested on 24 April 2026, charged as an adult with a Class A misdemeanour of unlawful production or distribution of deepfake sexually explicit media, and is presumed innocent. The sheriff said there is a young victim in the case and that the damage was done despite the quick removal. Every account rests on the sheriff's office statements as relayed by three local stations.

AI system as recorded: AI tool, not identified, used according to the county sheriff's office to alter a photograph of a student so the student appeared nude

What Happened

The image. The county sheriff's office said that a 17-year-old high-school student altered an image of another student to make that student appear nude by using AI, posted it on a public Snapchat story and then removed it. According to the sheriff's office, the image stayed on Snapchat for only a few minutes, and screenshots were secured by at least one person while it was up. The sheriff's investigation concluded that the image was altered on 25 November 2025 (KFDM and 12News, relaying the sheriff's office). No source states separately when the image was posted. The AI tool is not identified.

Discovery and investigation. The first report to the school district was made on 13 April 2026. The investigation began on 16 April 2026 after the district superintendent contacted the sheriff about an explicit image of a student circulating on social media. Investigators interviewed students, staff and parents and executed search warrants for a social-media platform and email accounts. The sheriff said no district staff member saw a nude image of any student and that there is no evidence the image was altered on school property or during school hours; the student said the alteration was done off campus. The sheriff's office also looked into other students viewing inappropriate pictures and said those pictures were not criminal and were separate from this case.

Arrest and charge. On 24 April 2026 investigators interviewed the 17-year-old at the school, where, according to the sheriff, the student admitted altering the image with AI and posting it on Snapchat. The student was arrested, charged as an adult with a Class A misdemeanour of unlawful production or distribution of deepfake sexually explicit media, and is presumed innocent. The sheriff described the student as remorseful and said the student had to be held accountable because there is an innocent young victim in the case; on 28 April the sheriff told KTRE that the post was taken down after a few minutes but the damage was already done, and that this was the county's first AI case.

What is not reported. The depicted student's age and any statement from the student or family are not reported. The sheriff's description of the harm (embarrassment, damage done) is the only account of consequences for the depicted student.

Reported harm

According to the county sheriff's office, a student's image was altered with AI to appear nude and posted on a public Snapchat story, where it was screenshotted by at least one person before removal; the sheriff said the damage was done and that there is an innocent young victim. No further consequence for the depicted student is reported.

Outcome

Ongoing

The sheriff's office said the 17-year-old was arrested on 24 April 2026 after admitting the alteration and posting in an interview, and was charged as an adult with a Class A misdemeanour of unlawful production or distribution of deepfake sexually explicit media (up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000 on conviction, per KFDM). KTRE (28 April 2026) reported the case as in the hands of the court. No court hearing, plea or outcome is reported.

What remains unknown

  • The depicted student's age, and whether the student or the family has described any consequence; the sheriff's words (embarrassing, damage done, innocent young victim) are the only account of harm.
  • When the altered image was posted on Snapchat; the sheriff's office dated only the alteration (25 November 2025), an investigative conclusion that was not independently confirmed.
  • Which AI tool was used, and whether anyone beyond the person who took screenshots saw or shared the image.
  • When the sheriff's office was first notified: KFDM gives two different accounts and 12News matches only one of them, so no notification date is recorded.
  • The outcome of the charge; the case was reported as in the hands of the court on 28 April 2026 and no hearing is reported.

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The county sheriff's office, relayed by KFDM, 12News and KTRE, said the 17-year-old admitted altering an image of a classmate by using AI to make the classmate appear nude and posting it on Snapchat, and that its investigation concluded the image was artificially altered on 25 November 2025. The AI-altered sexual image is the harm itself: it depicts the classmate (depicted_or_impersonated) and was seen and screenshotted by at least one person. The tool is not identified, the image was not examined by the research agent, and the only account is the sheriff's office statement; the charge is untested in court.

Henderson, Kentucky: police identified AI-generated nude images of two middle-school children on a device after a report that such images were being created and shown to other students at South Middle School; a juvenile was lodged at the juvenile detention centre on charges of distributing sexually explicit images without consent and possessing and distributing matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor

Henderson Police said that on 'last Thursday' (17 September 2026) they received a report that AI-generated nude images of children were being created and shown to other students at South Middle School in Henderson, Kentucky. During the investigation officers found and identified AI-generated photographs of two minor victims on a digital device. A juvenile accused of sharing the images was lodged at the Juvenile Detention Center on three charge types: distribution of sexually explicit images without consent; two counts of possession or viewing of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12 and under 18; and distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12 and under 18. The school said on Monday 21 September that it was aware of a situation involving a student allegedly misusing artificial intelligence and inappropriate images, that the police investigation was active and that it had remained in communication with the families involved. 14 News (WFIE) reported the case on 21 September; WKYT carried the same report. The tool is not named. The depicted children's exact ages are not reported, though the charge descriptors put them between 12 and 18. Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends

On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. The tool is not named. The juveniles are not named in any report.
