Rome Carabinieri say phone fraud suspects used AI software to clone relatives' voices in calls that took money from mostly older residents

The Carabinieri of the Compagnia Roma Centro announced on 3 June 2026 that they had reported 44 people to the judicial authorities as the alleged perpetrators of 39 completed or attempted phone frauds committed between November 2025 and May 2026. According to the Carabinieri account relayed by RomaToday, Fanpage, RaiNews and Il Messaggero, the fraudsters posed as bank staff or police, faked the caller number shown on the victim's phone (spoofing) and used artificial-intelligence software to clone the voices of the victims' relatives, then invented threats to savings or road accidents involving children or grandchildren so that victims made urgent bank transfers or topped up payment cards held by accomplices. The victims were mostly older residents of Rome. The Carabinieri recovered money, gold and jewellery estimated at over 900,000 euros. The outlets do not describe an individual victim, do not say how many of the 39 cases involved a cloned voice, and do not say how the investigators established that the voices were AI-generated.

AI system as recorded: Artificial-intelligence software that the Carabinieri say the fraudsters used to clone the voices of victims' relatives in phone calls; no tool is named

What Happened

The Carabinieri account. On 3 June 2026 the Carabinieri of the Compagnia Roma Centro announced the results of an operation against digital fraud. They had reported 44 people to the judicial authorities as the presumed perpetrators of 39 frauds, completed or attempted, committed between November 2025 and May 2026. The investigation started from victims' complaints and used bank checks on cards and accounts, phone records, video-surveillance images, databases and social media profiles.

How the frauds worked, according to the investigators. The outlets relay the modus operandi that the Carabinieri reconstructed. The fraudsters sent text messages or called victims while posing as bank staff or members of the police, used spoofing so that the real number of a bank or a Carabinieri or police office appeared on the victim's phone, and used artificial-intelligence software to clone the voices of the victims' relatives. They invented dangers to the victims' savings or road accidents involving children or grandchildren, and induced the victims to make urgent bank transfers or top up payment cards held by accomplices. Fanpage writes that the AI programs let the suspects disguise their own voices by cloning those of the victims' relatives.

Victims and losses. RomaToday describes the victims as almost all Roman residents, mostly older people. Il Messaggero writes that they were not only older people. The Carabinieri recovered cash, gold and jewellery estimated at over 900,000 euros; Fanpage adds that the total taken was higher once victims' bank transfers are counted. The reports give no individual account of a victim deceived by a cloned voice and do not say how many of the 39 cases involved one.

What is not established. No tool is named, no recording or forensic analysis is described, and no court has ruled. Il Messaggero says the cases involved different groups, all of whose members came from Campania, while Fanpage describes a single network.

Reported harm

According to the Carabinieri, victims, mostly older Rome residents, were induced to make urgent transfers or top up payment cards in 39 completed or attempted frauds that used spoofed numbers and, the investigators say, AI-cloned voices of relatives; property worth over 900,000 euros was recovered.

Outcome

Ongoing

The Carabinieri of the Compagnia Roma Centro reported 44 people to the judicial authorities (denunciati) as the presumed perpetrators of 39 completed or attempted frauds, and recovered cash, gold and jewellery estimated at over 900,000 euros (announced 3 June 2026). Il Messaggero reports that all 44 suspects come from Campania and that the cases involved different groups. No report of a charge, trial or court decision was found in news searches on 2 November 2026.

What remains unknown

  • How many of the 39 completed or attempted frauds used a cloned voice, and how many people lost money
  • How the investigators established that the voices were AI-generated, and which software was used
  • Whether prosecutors brought charges and whether any case has reached court
  • Whether the 44 suspects formed one network or several groups (Fanpage and Il Messaggero differ)

What the evidence supports

AI involvement: reported. The Carabinieri of the Compagnia Roma Centro, who investigated the 39 frauds using victims' complaints, bank checks and phone records, reconstructed a modus operandi in which the fraudsters used artificial-intelligence software to clone the voices of the victims' relatives (s1, s3, s4; Fanpage s2 adds that the programs let the suspects disguise their own voices as those relatives). The cloned voices impersonated relatives toward the people called and were part of what induced them to make urgent transfers or top up payment cards (s1, s3). This is an attribution by the investigating Carabinieri, relayed by four outlets from one statement; no tool, recording or forensic analysis is disclosed, and the number of cases in which a cloned voice was used is not stated.

People reported harmed in this case

Not reliably quantifiable from the sources

The Carabinieri count 39 frauds, completed or attempted ('39 episodi di truffe riuscite o tentate', Fanpage); attempted frauds need not have harmed anyone, victims are not counted individually and the share of cases in which a cloned voice was used is not stated, so the people harmed are unquantified (numeric zero placeholders). The 44 reported suspects and the value recovered are not counts of harmed people.

Counted once within this case. The same person may appear in other cases. This count does not establish AI causation.

Bhopal: a security guard lost about Rs 35,000 to a caller whose voice sounded like a friend, reported as a suspected AI voice-cloning fraud

Free Press Journal reported on 4 October 2026 that a 50-year-old security guard from the TT Nagar area of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, was cheated of nearly Rs 35,000 after a caller impersonated a friend by mimicking the friend's voice. According to the report, the call came on 30 September from an unidentified person who claimed to need money urgently and sent a QR code. The guard made three transfers (Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000), then reached the friend on the friend's own number and learned that the friend had not called. The outlet calls it a suspected case of AI-enabled fraud with a suspected AI-cloned voice. TT Nagar police registered a case and opened an investigation. No source confirms that the voice was AI-generated.

Picos, Piauí, Brazil: a digital influencer lost more than R$56,000 when fraudsters sent him audio messages in his uncle's AI-cloned voice 'confirming' a car he was buying in Fortaleza

On Monday 10 August 2026 a digital influencer from Picos, in the centre-south of Piauí, began negotiating a car advertised online for sale in Fortaleza (Ceará), where an uncle of his lives, and asked the sellers to take the car to the uncle so he could inspect it. On Tuesday 11 August a contact using a different number but the uncle's photo sent him audio messages in a voice identical to his uncle's, generated with artificial intelligence, saying the car was in good condition and telling him to make the bank transfer. Believing he was speaking to his uncle, he transferred the money; when he then called the uncle's real number he learned he had been defrauded. The loss exceeded R$56,000, money he says he had saved for years. He registered a police report on 11 August; the Piauí property-crimes unit (Depatri) is investigating and he is seeking a refund from the banks. The account is the victim's own, reported by G1 Piauí on 13 August 2026 from his social-media posts and an interview; the police unit did not respond to G1 before publication.

Natore, Bangladesh: callers told a health-complex employee that his son had been arrested with drugs, then used an AI-cloned copy of the son's voice to win his trust and took Tk 40,000; two men were arrested in Gaibandha in September 2026

According to a press release from Special Response Battalion-13 (SRB-13), relayed by Ajker Patrika, DBC News and NTV, on 20 July 2026 a man who works at the Natore Sadar upazila health complex received a call saying that his younger son had been arrested by police with drugs. The callers then used AI to imitate the son's voice so that the father believed the story, and demanded money to get the son released. He sent a total of Tk 40,000 in two payments through the mobile financial service Nagad, and realised it was a fraud when he reached his son directly. He filed a fraud case at Natore Sadar police station on 25 September 2026. That evening SRB-13 arrested two men, described as the ring's leader and an associate, at their homes in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, seizing nine mobile phones, a passport and Tk 14,100 in cash; SRB says they admitted involvement during initial questioning and handed them to the police for further legal action, and NTV reports they were sent to Gaibandha district jail through the court on 26 September.

Attica, Greece: a fraud ring cloned relatives' voices with AI to 'confirm' fake fibre-installation instructions; two collectors arrested in Nea Ionia with €30,000 of a victim's valuables, at least six cases since July 2026

On 18 September 2026 the Hellenic Police announced that its Organised Crime Directorate had dismantled a criminal organisation, active since at least early July 2026, whose members defrauded and robbed residents of Attica by posing on the phone as staff of the electricity distributor ΔΕΔΔΗΕ, mobile operators or fibre-optic installers. When a target hesitated, the callers asked for a relative's phone number, called that relative under a mobile-operator pretext to obtain a voice sample, cloned the voice with an AI tool and then played the cloned voice to the target to 'confirm' the instructions. Two men aged 23 and 25, described as the ring's 'collectors', were arrested in Nea Ionia just after removing valuables worth €30,000 from a victim's home; the case file, covering criminal organisation, fraud and aggravated theft with proceeds above €120,000, names four more people. Police have so far confirmed at least five further cases with the same method and estimate the group's total proceeds above €1 million. The two arrested were brought before the prosecutor and referred to an investigating judge.
