Vietnamese police open a criminal case after an exam candidate streamed his graduation exam paper to a friend who solved it with ChatGPT
On 26 June 2025, during the literature paper of Vietnam's national high school graduation exam in Lam Dong province, an invigilator caught an 18-year-old candidate using a hidden button camera and wireless earpiece and suspended him from the exam. According to the provincial police account reported by Bao Lam Dong and VnExpress, he had streamed the paper to a 17-year-old friend at an internet cafe, who photographed part of it, used the ChatGPT app to solve it and read the answers to him over a Messenger call. On 27 June 2025 the Lam Dong police security investigation agency opened a criminal case for intentionally disclosing and appropriating state secrets, because unreleased graduation exam papers are classified; police said initially that only the two young people were involved and that they had found no further sharing of the paper. Neither is named.

AI system as recorded: ChatGPT app, which the candidate's friend used to solve photographed pages of the literature exam paper and whose answers were read to the candidate over a call (per the Lam Dong police account as reported)
What Happened
The exam. According to the Lam Dong provincial police account reported by Bao Lam Dong, an invigilator noticed unusual behaviour by an 18-year-old candidate during the literature paper of the 2025 national high school graduation exam on the morning of 26 June 2025, suspected him of using high-tech devices, reported it to the head of the exam centre and recorded a suspension from the exam. Police say that, under pressure to do well, he had bought a wireless earpiece and a button camera on Facebook and asked a 17-year-old friend to solve and read out the answers.
The ChatGPT use. The friend waited at a public internet cafe but, playing a game, noticed the live video of the paper only about 45 minutes later. He photographed part of the paper (page 2 according to Bao Lam Dong; two pages according to VnExpress), used the ChatGPT app to solve it and read the answers to the candidate over a Messenger call. The invigilator seized the devices.
The criminal case. Because unreleased graduation exam papers are classified as top-secret state documents until two-thirds of the exam time has passed, the provincial police security investigation agency opened a criminal case on 27 June 2025 for intentionally disclosing and appropriating state secrets. Police said initially that only the two young people were involved and that the paper had not been sent to others or posted online. VnExpress International reported that the 18-year-old was under investigation. At a national press conference the same day, a Ministry of Public Security official said three other candidates elsewhere had photographed parts of exam papers and sent them to AI apps, and that they admitted the violations.
Reported harm
An 18-year-old candidate was suspended from Vietnam's national graduation exam and police opened a criminal case for disclosing state secrets in which they said only he and a 17-year-old friend were involved after the friend used ChatGPT to solve the streamed exam paper, according to the Lam Dong police account.
Outcome
UnknownThe candidate was suspended from the exam on 26 June 2025 and the Lam Dong provincial police security investigation agency opened a criminal case under Article 337(2) of the Penal Code on 27 June 2025. VnExpress reported that the 18-year-old was under investigation. No charge, trial or later decision about the two young people was found in a search on 23 October 2026.
What remains unknown
- Whether either young person was later charged as a defendant, and the outcome of the criminal case.
- Whether the candidate's exam results were annulled and how the suspension affected his university admission.
- What ChatGPT produced and how much of it the candidate copied.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The harm is the exam authorities' and police's response to cheating in which ChatGPT solved the exam paper, reviewed as a consequential response. According to the police account reported by Bao Lam Dong and VnExpress, the friend uploaded photographs of the streamed paper to the ChatGPT app, which produced the answers he read to the candidate in the exam room. The suspension was for using high-tech devices, and the criminal offence named is the disclosure and appropriation of the classified paper, which the scheme sent outside the room and into ChatGPT.

Hanoi police open a criminal case after two graduation exam candidates photographed exam papers and had AI apps StudyX and Gemini solve them
Hanoi police said on 1 July 2025 that they had opened a criminal case for unintentionally disclosing state secrets after two candidates in Vietnam's national high school graduation exam on 26 and 27 June 2025 smuggled phones into exam rooms, photographed exam papers and used AI apps to solve them. According to the police account reported by Thanh Nien and VnExpress, one candidate uploaded part of the maths paper to the StudyX app but copied only two answers, and did the same in the chemistry and physics papers; the other photographed the maths, history and English papers and used Gemini, was caught by the exam board and was suspended from the exam. A photo of part of the maths paper had appeared on an AI maths-solving app before the exam ended, worrying candidates and parents about exam security. Police said students who did this would be disqualified, have their results annulled and could face administrative or criminal action. Neither candidate is named.
Florida State University Shooting (Phoenix Ikner's ChatGPT Questions Before the Attack)
On April 17, 2025, a shooting near the student union at Florida State University in Tallahassee killed two people and wounded at least five others. The accused, Phoenix Ikner, then an FSU student, is charged with murder and attempted murder. ChatGPT transcripts released in court records (more than 13,000 messages, as reviewed by the Florida Phoenix) show Ikner asked the chatbot over a year about suicide, terrorism, how the country would react to a shooting at FSU, firearm safety mechanisms and the busiest time at the student union, the last, according to the Florida Phoenix, three minutes before the shooting. Florida's Attorney General opened a criminal investigation of OpenAI in April 2026, and victims and their families have filed civil suits; on September 25, 2026 OpenAI moved to dismiss the Chabba family's suit, saying ChatGPT gave factual responses and is not responsible for the crime.
Switzerland: Federal Supreme Court refuses to hear a 243-page appeal that the appellant said was drafted with intensive ChatGPT Plus support
A father in a dispute with the canton of Basel-Stadt over an electricity-price bonus for his newborn daughter filed a 243-page appeal with 17 requests to Switzerland's Federal Supreme Court, about 28 times the length of the cantonal judgment he challenged, which ran to just under eight and a half pages. He told the court that drafting it had been possible only through his "above-average intelligence", his analytical skills and the intensive support of ChatGPT Plus. In judgment 2C_549/2026 of 28 September 2026 the presiding judge, sitting alone, found the brief excessively prolix, held that using artificial intelligence did not release him from the pleading requirements and was no free pass for sprawling briefs, refused him a period to shorten it and declined to hear the appeal. No court costs were imposed. blue News reported the judgment on 20 October 2026.
Brasília labour court upholds the for-cause dismissal of a manager it found used ChatGPT to alter a delivery photo to contest an iFood customer's complaint
In a judgment of 30 July 2026, the 2nd Labour Court of Brasília (Regional Labour Court of the 10th Region) upheld the dismissal for cause, on 19 March 2026, of a manager hired in June 2024. The employer said he had used artificial intelligence to falsify photos of orders on the iFood delivery app. A witness told the court she saw him use ChatGPT to alter a photo of an incomplete order, in which two of four soft drinks had been sent, so that it appeared complete, and use it to contest the customer's complaint to iFood support. The judge found this an act of dishonesty and misconduct that broke the trust required of a manager, rejected his claim that the dismissal was fabricated in retaliation for a claim he had filed the day before, dismissed all his claims, denied severance items and ordered him to pay 10% counsel fees, suspended because he was granted free legal aid. The legal news site Migalhas reported the judgment on 3 August 2026. No appeal is reported.
