Mexico City: prosecutors arrest IPN student accused of making classmates' photos into nude images with AI; acquitted twice, later sentenced on another charge
In October 2023 female students at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) business school in Mexico City complained that a fellow student had taken their photos from social media and edited them with artificial intelligence to make them look naked; he was also accused of selling them, which the 2025 conviction did not establish. The IPN expelled him on 16 October and the Mexico City prosecutor's office (FGJCDMX) opened an investigation; on 26 October 2023 it announced his arrest, describing him as accused of manipulating intimate photographs altered with artificial intelligence. Students said eight victims had filed complaints. Police found more than 166,000 images and 20,000 videos, edited and original, on his devices. In December 2024 a judge acquitted him in two cases of violation of privacy; in May 2025 he was sentenced to five years in prison for child sexual abuse material, a conviction based on storage of the material. Other cases remained open.

AI system as recorded: Artificial intelligence used to alter classmates' social-media photos so they appeared naked, according to the Mexico City prosecutor's office and the complainants (tool not identified)
What Happened
The complaints. In October 2023 female students of the IPN's Escuela Superior de Comercio y Administración (Santo Tomás) in Mexico City reported a fellow student under the Ley Olimpia, saying he had taken photos from their social media and edited them with artificial intelligence so they appeared naked; he was also accused of selling them. The IPN announced his expulsion on 16 October, and a week after the complaints the Mexico City prosecutor's office opened an investigation. Students said eight victims had filed complaints but that thousands of photos had been modified.
The arrest. On 26 October 2023 the prosecutor's office announced, through the city's head of government and its own account, the arrest of the student accused of manipulating intimate photographs altered with artificial intelligence, after a search of his home. El Financiero later reported that more than 166,000 images and 20,000 videos, edited and original, were found on a tablet, and that the prosecutor's office and cyber police said the material corresponded to students aged 17 to 25.
The courts. In December 2024 a judge acquitted him in two cases of violation of privacy; he stayed in custody because of six further cases and one for child sexual abuse material. In May 2025 he was sentenced to five years in prison for child sexual abuse material. Excélsior reports that this conviction rested on storage of the material, without proof of sale, and that the victims' lawyer said offences concerning the creation and spread of the fake images were still being investigated. No court finding about the AI editing was read.
Reported harm
According to the complainants and the Mexico City prosecutor's office, a student altered classmates' social-media photos with artificial intelligence into nude images and was accused of selling them; eight students filed complaints.
Outcome
OngoingArrested by the FGJCDMX on 26 October 2023 after a search of his home; expelled by the IPN. On 5 December 2024 El Financiero reported that a judge acquitted him in two cases of violation of privacy (the victims' lawyer said she would appeal) and that six further cases and one for child sexual abuse material remained. In May 2025 he was sentenced to five years for child sexual abuse material, based on storage without proof of sale; seven investigation files remained open (Excélsior).
What remains unknown
- Which AI tool was used and how investigators established its use.
- How many people were depicted in the altered images and how many images were sold.
- The outcome of the remaining investigation files and of any appeal.
What the evidence supports
AI involvement: reported. The Mexico City prosecutor's office, which investigated and searched the suspect's home, announced the arrest of the student accused of manipulating intimate photographs altered with artificial intelligence; the complainants say he edited their social-media photos with AI to make them look naked and sold them. The AI-altered images depicting the students are the harm described. The tool and the technical basis of the prosecutor's description are undisclosed, and no court finding on the AI editing was read: the two privacy cases ended in acquittal and the later conviction rested on storage of child sexual abuse material.

Henderson Police said that on 'last Thursday' (17 September 2026) they received a report that AI-generated nude images of children were being created and shown to other students at South Middle School in Henderson, Kentucky. During the investigation officers found and identified AI-generated photographs of two minor victims on a digital device. A juvenile accused of sharing the images was lodged at the Juvenile Detention Center on three charge types: distribution of sexually explicit images without consent; two counts of possession or viewing of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12 and under 18; and distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12 and under 18. The school said on Monday 21 September that it was aware of a situation involving a student allegedly misusing artificial intelligence and inappropriate images, that the police investigation was active and that it had remained in communication with the families involved. 14 News (WFIE) reported the case on 21 September; WKYT carried the same report. The tool is not named. The depicted children's exact ages are not reported, though the charge descriptors put them between 12 and 18. The accused is described as a South Middle School student; the accused's age and any relationship to the depicted children beyond attending the same school are not reported.
Jaú, São Paulo: eight 15-year-old ninth-grade boys at a private school are reported to have made fake nude images of a female classmate with artificial intelligence and shared them in a WhatsApp group; the school suspended them and the Civil Police are investigating a 15-year-old for dissemination of child pornography and defamation
In early September 2026 a private school in Jaú, in the interior of São Paulo state, identified the circulation of fake intimate images of a female classmate made with artificial intelligence and contacted the families. According to the police report described by the press, eight ninth-grade boys, all aged 15, kept a WhatsApp group in which they used digital programs to manipulate images of the student so that she appeared unclothed. The school suspended the eight and informed the girl's parents. The father of one of the boys checked his son's phone, found the files and took the boy and the phone to the police to register a report; the girl's parents also registered a police report. The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat said the Civil Police are investigating a 15-year-old for dissemination of child pornography and defamation that occurred on the morning of Thursday 3 September. The school said the content originated on a private platform outside the school environment and that it had adopted protective and welcoming measures for the student and opened an internal inquiry. The AI tool used is not named. The students are minors and are not named in any report.
Cookeville, Tennessee: two high-school students were charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor after the sheriff's office said they used an AI program to turn photographs, including those of female classmates, into sexually explicit images and posted them; the mother of one depicted girl says her daughter shut herself in her room and stopped talking to friends
On 31 August 2026 the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was told of possible sharing of sexually explicit images at Cookeville High School. Detectives found that two male teenage students had used an artificial-intelligence program to turn photographs obtained online, in some cases photographs of fellow female students, into sexually explicit images, and had shared them; explicit images already stored on one phone were also shared. Both juveniles were taken to the Putnam County Juvenile Detention Center. One was charged with one count each of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, the other with two counts of each. The district attorney told NewsChannel 5 on 21 September that the two would be prosecuted in juvenile court. The mother of one of the depicted girls told the station the episode was very hard on her daughter, who had made no naked photographs herself, locked herself in her room and would not talk to her, to anybody or to her friends. The sheriff's-office account and the school system's statement were carried by WZTV, WSMV and 3B Media News on 1-2 September; NewsChannel 5 added its own interviews with the sheriff, the district attorney and the mother on 21 September. The tool is not named. The juveniles are not named in any report.
Buenos Aires: AI-generated fake intimate images of 13- and 14-year-old girls at the Carlos Pellegrini school circulate in pupils' WhatsApp groups; families file a complaint and the national ministry demands answers from the UBA
Perfil reported on 1 October 2026 that fake intimate images of female pupils, created with artificial intelligence, had circulated in the WhatsApp groups of second-year students at the Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini, a secondary school run by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). The girls are 13 and 14 years old. The case came to light in late June 2026, and the school acknowledged the chats on 30 June. According to the report, the students involved manipulated, spread and sold the material, and a message on classroom desks told the victims the boys would keep undressing and selling them. Families filed a complaint with the Buenos Aires City cybercrime prosecution unit (UFEDICI) on 16 July and say the school has not concluded disciplinary action. By 1 October the national Ministry of Human Capital had asked the UBA rector for a detailed report on the protective measures and sanctions applied.
